El Picador
What a special night. I found out about this show after it was announced 3 days prior to happening and I knew I had to be there. Here's a setlist (or an attempt at one at least). I'll post a review later. 10/04/2007Tangier RestaurantLos Angeles, Ca I'll Be Your Baby TonightDiamond JoeI Hear Them All>This Land is Your Land>I Hear Them AllElvis Presley BluesThe Way it Will BeStagger LeeChina DollKnuckleball CatcherPocohontusJack-a Roe To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)The Happy Sunny Side of LifeLuminous RoseRacing in the Streets(?)He Stopped Loving Her TodayTired EyesQueen Jane Approximatelyencore:Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Hodie
Wow, I've only seen David Rawlings once, and that was as a surprise guest with Jon Brion. I fell deeply in love, but it would've been even worse with songs like that. How lucky are you? As are others here, I've heard. :-)

Actually, I couldn't remember the name 'Largo" for some reason so I just said "the place where Jon Brion plays" and he quickly said "Oh, Largo." He said they love going down there and sitting in with Jon and folks whenever they're around LA. I look forward to future nightcaps at Largo after Gillian and David shows. This show with about 120 people was truly special for the quality of the music, intimacy of the room, and all the wonderful people in attendance. I think the majority of us realized what we were witnessing was special and the rest were considerate enough to respect that. I also met a couple wonderful humans whom I look forward to sharing more like experience with in the future.
Hodie
Hodie! Hiya! Having just got back to my hotel room after a charming and wonderful Jon Brion show, I don't even feel bad about having missed the David Rawlings extravaganza this thread is devoted to. Or not TOO bad. I don't have a setlist or anything, but I'll just say that I'd never before heard the song Abacab with Daytripper, the Batman Theme, Tequila, Sunshine of Your Love, and more, much more, all thrown in there. I really like the way that guy's brain works.
pnêyu
I didn't get to see David's set with Gillian in SF this weekend, but we spied him taking in Emmylou's set. Sigh. Sounds like a great show, by the way.
ms. yvon
hey! look at all the swell kids in this thread! el pic, i was at the show, too. how swell are the tangier staff? they really went out of their way to be helpful about everything. and the crowd was great, too! took two friends to the show who hadn't even heard david & gillian before the show. instant fans. of note on the set: david sang elvis presley blues! what a treat. when he played the song that ryan adams recorded, i half expected to hear him riffing about morrissey... personal aside: i've had to miss 3 shows in the last 2 weeks b/c of work. the two shows i DID see were this one and nick lowe at safari sam's. boy howdy. soooo fine. Viatroy, I wish I would've known you were there or going to be there. I would have loved to meet you. I did meet some wonderful people that night, all attending the show solo. We had that in common as well as a love for both Gillian and David. The three of us became instant friends. It's amazing how intimate engagements like this will do that. Here are some pictures taken by the girl stading next to me. There is also a recording out there of this night. It was done from a recorder in the jacket pocket of a fella standing behind me. I'll let you know when I get my hands on it.
ms. yvon
terrific pix! thanks for posting! i was on the steps in front of the bar on the right side of the room, standing level with the stage.
erter99
I've seen Gillian many, many times, and saw the Dave Rawlings Machine in Nashville where Norah Jones jumped up on stage to sing "Loretta." Awesome. So did they really play "Racing In the Street," as in the Springsteen song? If so, that's unreal - maybe my favorite song ever. Long live the Boss ...

pnêyu
A recording of this is up on dime and trader's den. I managed to find this on dime (listed as "Dave Rawlings") and am enjoying it now. I couldn't go to this show, but I hope they come back to a certain intimate venue in Los Angeles soon.
