Guest David Puddy
I never watch the show but a friend of mine called me to say they just mentioned a "Wilco CD". So I switched over...turns out it was a pivotal part of the plot!!! In hopes of maybe hearing something, I almost cried when someone broke the CD. But never fear, at the end I heard a cpl of notes...and was like "No WAY!!!" They played 'Passenger Side' finally caught this episode, as it was on tonight. good shit. BigWheeledWagon
Back when this came on in October, I really freaked my friends out by getting all excited at the mention of Wilco. On a second viewing ronight, it certainly seemed very conspicuous -- I wonder if it was a deliberate attempt to earn a little indie cred for the show without getting too obscure (though plenty of indie hipsters would be screaming "Dad Rock!"). I'd really like to think that some folks with the show are just big fans, but I tend to be a little cynical about these things. Anyway, after this viewing I had to pull out my guitar and play a little "Passenger Side." Oh, and kudos for doing a search and reviving the original thread.
W(TF)
I don't think a product can be featured on a show without compensation taking place in one form or another. For instance, ever notice that the names of amps and guitars and whatnot are sometimes taped over when you see bands on TV shows. I would think the show could pick up the phone to Tony M and just ask for the label's and band's permission? There's plenty of "compensation" in the goodwill advertising for a band like Wilco. My guess would be the writers drew straws for which semi-cool/obscure band to include. Or maybe they picked three and went with the one who's management gave them the least resistance? The whole MBA conspiracy thing was pretty funny to read though. Or I'm jusy hopelessly naive.
gogo
I still question whether the show would need the band's (or their management, or label, or whatever) permission just to use the band name. Again, not questioning that money changes hands for using the song, but when they never mention a specific "product", like a particular album, what does that do to the equation?
