Good Old Neon
You are right in the sense that when government regulates business, it is in favor of some businesses and at the expense of others. How this is an argument for increasing the size of government is beyond me. Also, I'd be interested in knowing what you consider to be a natural fuel efficiency standard. My point was not that the role of government should be increased, but that big business has more of an influence on Washington than the other way around

caliber66
mmm I don't like your ideals. I like buying the things I like, and I HATE having the Government tell me I can't do things. If Doug wants to go out and cruise around in a SUV he has the freedom to do so.If Doug wants to go out and spray a busload of nuns with an M-16, should he have the freedom to do that as well? Beltmann
I ain't down with Government telling somebody else how to make their product. No kidding... I say, the toy companies ought to put as much lead into their products as they damn well please. And E. coli is just another spice, if you ask me.
MrRain422
But the environmental costs have to be considered too. They will cost everyone financially (in addition to the other obvious ways) later on. Aren't future costs to be considered as well?

Good Old Neon
I read a lot of reports that state if stricter rules were in forced in regards to fuel efficiency, than the cost of the car would increase. Much like the price of a hybrid does not outweigh the costs of fuel in regards to savings. But see this goes in line with the Government telling the automakers how to make their cars. I ain't down with Government telling somebody else how to make their product. I like a car that runs on love... or the music of the Black Crowes... either one is cool with us. That may or may not be true, some of that cost might be passed along to consumers, but I
caliber66
I like buying the things I like, and I HATE having the Government tell me I can't do things. For clarity's sake, I was responding to the second half of this statement, and not suggesting that one should not be allowed to buy an SUV, should one want an SUV. There are a lot of things the government tells me I can't do, and I'm just fine with it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go dump a barrel of mercury in the stream behind your house. Guest Golyadkin
Umm I can go buy an 18 wheeler today if I wanted too. So could you. You could also drive it to work. All you need to do is take a test to see if you can drive one. A dump-truck, I don't think you need a test at all, here are some cool dump-trucks if you are interested: http://www.lapinetrucks.com/ProcessProdLin...edProdLines=DUM Zambonis only work well on ice, but if some dude wanted to drive one to work, more power to him. I am sure some dude here in Hockey Town thought about it. I like Beltman and Jude, however Doug is picking up a little sarcasm. pssss the environment will be fine. Caliber66, I am for proper dumping laws. All of the costs get past to the consumers There is nothing better than cruising the mall parking lot in my SUV, smoking cigs, slamming milk and looking to pick up some babes. America RULES!!!! MrRain422
My point was that the more you increase government regulation of businesses, the more influence businesses are going to have on government. Does this have to be so, though? Why?
EL the Famous
Are you fundamentally less free for not being given the choice to drive one? as current law allows that i can, additional ripple effects as jude described and your suggesting that option be taken away...fundamentally, yes. i choose not to drive one...but that's my choice. while i'm not completely opposed to having certain rules & regs placed on manufacturers that protect consumers/residents/etc., i also don't find the comparisons to handguns, lead paint, etc. to be apples/apples either. on one hand, you're saying everybody should 'get creative, use our ingenuity and sense of civic duty to make some much needed changes' (which i'm down with) and, on the other, you seem to be saying the government should do that for us. you know me, i'd like to see the some actual numbers on 'consumer costs' and 'environmental/future' costs to truly uqantify/qualify what we're talking about here. otherwise, it's just personal opinion and heresay...these conversations seem to take on a lot of emotion versus tangible speaking points.
