Smokestack Joe
ive had a few days off so (single and lots of free time) i went through all my live wilco cds and weeded out the poor sounding quality shows and kept the ones that i think perserve a Live Wilco career perspective. naturally, im on a wilco high right now. still think the best years are '97-00 but you can't deny the musicianship of the current lineup. to me the most interesting live years are post-Bennett pre-Cline when wilco was a powerhouse foursome: Tweedy, Stirratt, Kotche, Bach.... dondoboy
I always thought that line-up was far too quiet
Smokestack Joe
well it was interesting in the context of wilco music, yes quiet but still acceptable, rocking, able to move a crowd
thejokeexplained
well it was interesting in the context of wilco music, yes quiet but still acceptable, rocking, able to move a crowd IMO it was not so much the line up of the band that rocked and moved the crowd, as it was the new YHF music they were giving us a steady dose of. willywoody
to me the most interesting live years are post-Bennett pre-Cline when wilco was a powerhouse foursome: Tweedy, Stirratt, Kotche, Bach.... that is utterly ridiculous. saw the line up in seattle and it was the least impressive. late bennett is great, there's nothing like a band on the edge of insanity. but they may be even better now. froggie
i like that late 2001 period before mikael joined (around september to november of that year). really nice stripped back sound with the best versions of Sunken treasure
Guest Jules
to me the most interesting live years are post-Bennett pre-Cline when wilco was a powerhouse foursome: Tweedy, Stirratt, Kotche, Bach....still my favorite (or at least most memorable) shows. Best performances of certain songs that just can't be replicated with the current lineup. Just watch the IATTBYH movie.

Although all of the incarnations of the band are excellent in their own right I really love the arrangements from that era. Very unique in the history of Wilco. Smokestack Joe
thats what i am saying, it was unique! may not be the best lineup, may not be the best rocking versions, but it was all unique. When i first saw the band in that lineup i was a little worried, skeptical since wilco has always had 5-6 guys for a touring band. but the 4 made it happen.
Edie
I would be interested in some recommendations. I have many shows, but tbh, I don't know which ones are the ones to listen to.

Smokestack Joe
i think those lounge ax shows are quite paramount to the tweedy musical history......
