Jane's Addiction Raids Vaults For Boxed Set, DVD

Jane's Addiction

January 23, 2008, 11:35 AM ET

Greg Prato, N.Y.

Although it appears most of Jane's Addiction's studio outtakes/rarities have been accounted for and issued, classic live recordings are another story. Now, Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins is looking into assembling a box set that will focus on memorable and previously unheard live performances from the group.

"We're working on it," Perkins tells Billboard.com. "As far as the packaging and the content, it's going to be loaded. We're hoping to step it up into kind of a more 'collector's item' sort of situation. As far as the content, I've got a whole six or seven boxes full of stuff. We're going through it with Warner Bros., and seeing what's appropriate -- what's usable as far as, 'How far do we want to go with lo-fi?' In a perfect world, I would hope to see it out by the summer, but I don't think that's possible. Maybe fall."

It appears as though Perkins is more interested in collecting the uncommon rather than the common for the as-yet-to-be-titled set. "I'm partial to grabbing some live shows -- live stuff that I recall being a really splendid night as far as the band having a good time on stage," he says, saying he'd favor shows featuring Bauhaus covers as opposed to routine versions of "Ted, Just Admit It" or "Ocean Size."

"There's all those great '91 Lollapalooza shows, where Ice T would join us, or Siouxsie, or Dave [Navarro] would go out with Living Colour," Perkins says. "All these little combinations I know were recorded -- we just have to find them."

Perkins is also looking into assembling an accompanying DVD, which should include all three previously issued Jane's home videos: 1989's "Soul Kiss," 1993's "Gift" and 2003's "Three Days" -- with extras. "How they're actually going to slice it up is being discussed," he says. "But there is a lot of visual footage and a lot of audio footage. I've got a lot of stuff nobody's seen -- home footage. And when Warners takes a look at stuff in their vault, we'll see what they pull out."

With the impending arrival of the boxed set, questions are bound to come up regarding the possibility of a reunion of Jane's Addition or the band born from its ashes, Porno For Pyros.

"There is talk always about it, but I guess talk is one thing," Perkins says. "To really sit down, make it happen and rehearse -- we're not up to that point anywhere. [but] I think everyone loves playing those songs in both those bands and we miss it."

I'd be interested in what they put out. Some dvd stuff would be great. I'm surprised Perkins is taking the reigns on this as Farrell always seemed to have such a tight grip on what Jane's does (although i suppose it's just Perkins' take on it here).

I'd definitely be psyched if they do another tour, too. With Erik Avery, of course. I caught them a few years ago when they did just 3-4 U.S. dates before doing a bunch of shows overseas and they've still got it.

Jane's Addiction to reunite for award

By Dean Goodman 1 hour, 36 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The four original members of pioneering alternative rock band Jane's Addiction will perform for the first time in almost 17 years next week, temporarily burying the hatchet so they can receive an award for career achievement.

Bass player Eric Avery, who had declined to play with the band since it first broke up in 1991, said on Tuesday he would hit the stage at the inaugural NME Awards in Los Angeles on April 23 with singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins.

His bandmates, who have resurrected Jane's Addiction a few times, had previously agreed to attend the event at the El Rey Theatre, leaving Avery once again as the holdout.

The band will be honored with the "Godlike Genius Award" for its contribution to the development of alternative rock with such albums as 1988's "Nothing's Shocking" and 1990's "Ritual de lo Habitual."

"I have always considered reunions to be a way to make a quick buck, and it sells short my own experience of it the first time around," Avery said in a statement. "The reason I started to even consider this is because it's honoring the past instead of trying to recreate it."

Avery has kept a relatively low profile since leaving Jane's Addiction and just released his first solo album.

The band first reunited in 1997, with a succession of bass players filling in for Avery, including Red Hot Chili Peppers member Flea.

The last Jane's Addiction show was in December 2003 when the band, featuring session musician Chris Chaney, cut short a tour to promote its album, "Strays." The split was acrimonious but evidently not irreparable.

In a statement on his blog published on Sunday, Navarro said he, Farrell and Perkins "have been speaking regularly (and) have decided to focus on what's most important ... The music."

His comments doubled as a preemptive strike against journalists and bloggers inclined to bring up old quotes in which the band members trashed each other.

"Everybody in the world has said something over the top due to an emotional charge," Navarro said. "The bottom line is that we have been getting along great and are moving forward with our personal and musical relationships."

The NME Awards are being held by British music magazine NME, which has organized an event in the UK since the 1950s.

The last time they raided the vaults, we got:

Kettle Whistle

Which makes me significantly less excited for this release.

Although the reuniting with Eric Avery does make me prick up my ears a bit more.

I've never heard that one. I wish they would fix the steril sound of Nothing Shocking and re-issue it.

I will always recall that album for being one of the two times I actually bought something because the record store guy with the eye make up said I would like it.

The only real dud on Kettle Whistle is "My Cat's Name Is Maceo" :yucky

That's up there as one of my favorite tracks on KW, actually. Overall, a decent album.

Porno for Pyros' Good God's Urge has a few nice tracks, too.

With all this love, I'll have to go back and listen to Kettle Whistle again.

Not expecting much from it, but what the hell?

Jane's Addiction reunites at L.A. bash

By Dean Goodman Thu Apr 24, 8:57 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The four original members of pioneering alternative rock band Jane's Addiction performed in public for the first time in 17 years on Wednesday, burying their differences to receive an award for career achievement.

Singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins hit the stage at the inaugural NME Awards in Los Angeles with bass player Eric Avery, who had declined to play with the band since it first broke up in September 1991.

They performed four tunes, including "Mountain Song" and an acoustic version of "Jane Says" for an excited crowd of about 400 people at the El Rey Theatre.

"We made it and I'm really happy to be here," said Farrell, alternately guzzling from a bottle of red wine and dispensing its contents to fans in the mosh pit.

The quartet received the Godlike Genius Award -- a trophy of a clenched fist with the middle finger pointed skyward -- for their contribution to the development of alternative rock.

Jane's Addiction emerged from the Los Angeles rock underground in the 1980s, distinguishing itself from other post-punk groups with Farrell's sexually ambiguous stagecraft and the musicians' deft ear for melodic tunes. They recorded just three albums and scored radio play with such songs as "Been Caught Stealing" and "Jane Says."

But drug-fueled friction led to the band's demise and the original lineup played their last gig in Hawaii in 1991. The band reunited in 1997 with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea coming aboard as the first of several substitutes for Avery.

The last show was in December 2003 when the band cut short a tour. The split was bitter but evidently not irreparable.

While Farrell, Navarro and Perkins readily agreed to accept the NME award when it was announced, Avery sat on the fence. He finally came around last week, declaring in a statement he was happy to honor the past "instead of trying to recreate it."

The NME Awards were held by British music magazine NME, which has organized an event in the United Kingdom since the 1950s.

The host, Australian comedian Jim Jeffries, said he expected the winners to be drunk when they reached the stage. But the acceptance speeches, streamed in real time on MySpace, were mostly undistinguished.

Winners included Las Vegas rockers the Killers as best band and the Foo Fighters for best album.

"I'm probably going to take this to my proctologist," Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl said via video, as he surveyed the curious statuette.

Former Clash principal Mick Jones received the Inspiration Award. He said he used to read NME religiously every week as a youngster.

"I don't now. I scan it on the Internet, like the rest of you," he added.

Jane's Addiction Rocks Tiny L.A. Bar

October 24, 2008 , 3:35 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

The original lineup of Jane's Addiction crammed into tiny Los Angeles Mexican bar La Cita last night (Oct. 23), playing an hour-long set for a privileged crowd and fueling hopes for a full-scale reunion.

On his blog, guitarist Dave Navarro gushed about the gig, which featured some of the band's earliest songs, including "Trip Away" and "1%." Also on the set list were "Up the Beach," "Whores," "Ain't No Right," "Pigs in Zen," "Ted ... Just Admit It," "Oceansize," "Had a Dad" and "Been Caught Stealing."

Navarro singled out original bassist Eric Avery, who declined to participate in any of the Jane's reunions since the core group split in 1991. Avery "brought the bottom punk rock glue that we have been missing for years," Navarro said, before thanking the three musicians who've filled in for Avery ever since.

Navarro, vocalist Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins initially reunited with Avery for a short performance in April as part of the NME Awards in Los Angeles.

"The fact remains that this machine cannot really run as well with after-market parts," he wrote. "Jane's Addiction has to be fully stock in order to do what it does best.

"The quick non-stop pace left all of us and just about everybody drenched by the end of the hour," he continued. "Everything came together, hopefully not for the last time."

Not something I would want to see, but it's a nice thing for their fans:

Nine Inch Nails To Tour With Jane's Addiction

Trent Reznor

February 16, 2009 07:49 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Nine Inch Nails will tour later this year with the reunited Jane's Addiction, NIN frontman Trent Reznor wrote in a post on the band's Web site.

Although he stopped short of saying the band was going on something more than a hiatus, Reznor confirmed these will be the last NIN shows for some time, and that they will be "much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted" compared to last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour. "It's time to make NIN disappear for a while," he said.

Dates have not yet been announced, but Reznor says the tour will take the bands "across the globe."

The pairing with Jane's Addiction was inspired by NIN's stint on the maiden Lollapalooza tour in 1991, which was headlined by Jane's. The band broke up for the first time shortly thereafter, only to reunite minus original bassist Eric Avery in 1997 and again in 2001.

"These performances essentially created and defined the term 'alternative' rock in the U.S., created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really f*cking FUN to play and attend -- truly the best times I've had," Reznor wrote.

Of late, Reznor has been in the studio with Jane's, which has played a handful of intimate L.A. club shows in the past few months with Avery, but has yet to announce a full-scale reunion tour. In fact, the band is playing tonight (Feb. 16) at the Echoplex. The intent of the studio sessions is unclear from his post.

"Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting," he wrote. "We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first-hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room."

Reps for both acts were unavailable for comment at deadline.

Maybe just the mix on this, but I thought they sounded better when I saw them with Flea. This just seems to be lacking something imo.

Sounds odd to hear that the real, original band is lacking something.

Either way I'm skeptical on this.
