remphish1
I am planning a trip for spring of 09 and would really like to go to Greece. Anyone been? How many days do you recommend for Athens? Did you visit Santorini, Mykonos, or Rhodes....thoughts on those. Any other places I must visit? I am hoping to do a cruise.
aricandover
a good friend of mine is there now. he was staying in Thessaloniki, but recently made his way to Athens. he's been going over there for like the last 6 or 7 years, so I could ask him your questions and let you know what he says. RaspberryJam
The latest issue of Conde Nast Traveller had a big pull out section on all of the islands of Greece.
isadorah
I've been to Greece (Athens only) and LOVED it. Can't wait to go back! I would recommend a minimum of 3 days in Athens alone. I went in the off-season, so island hopping wasn't really an option (because ferry schedules in the off-season are very unpredictable and sometimes a boat might be scheduled, but won't actually run). There's an island (I can't remember the name) that has no automobiles on it at all. It sounded amazing. And there was another that had black volcanic sand. I have the Lonely Planet book on Greece and found it to be a great resource, especially with train and ferry information. When you're in Athens, go to more than the Acropolis. There's a multi-pass you can get that gets you access to all of the ruins in the city, it is worth it and so fascinating to see how the original city was actually laid out by going to all the various ruins. Make sure you see the Theater of Dionysis (sp?)! It is my favorite place on earth. I could go on and on. Couple other pointers, the Greeks eat very very very late at night. They also have street vendors that sell these amazing breads (again the name escapes me) which make for a delicious breakfast (they're mentioned in Lonely Planet). nalafej
I just got back. Did a cruise from Istanbul to Athens. We stopped in Rhodes, Santorini and Mykanos for a day on the way and then spent 2 days/ nights in Athens. I highly recommend Santorini if you like walking around. Rhodes was nice too. You won't need a lot of time in either of those places. Mykanos didn't do much for me but we didn't spend a night which is when I hear it gets fun there. i would say 3 days in Athens is about right.
