Sam Phillips

Recommended Posts

I've lurked around here reading posts for about 5 years and yet to hear anyone mention her stuff.

I saw her at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago last weekend and found it to be both amazing and inspiring. I was just wondering if anyone else her dug her music and felt the same way!

Thanks!

You didn't lurk around here just waiting for us to mention her, did you?

I really like her... just picked up her most recent album this past weekend. May be my favorite. I saw that she was playing Old Town but couldn't make it. She's a talent.

No, I really love Wilco and have been a fan since I first saw them at the Vic in 1995. As I mellow with age however, I do dig the female singers (Neko Case, Aimee Mann, Jenny Lewis, etc.)

Not a thing wrong with that... I'm assuming you heard Allison Krauss and Robert Plant cover "Sister Rosetta"? Good stuff.

Well, I mentionned her album "A Boot & a Shoe" pretty high in my Top 100, if that ever means something.

I'm still wondering how one could dig the Beatles and not Sam Phillips. Her stuff is easily as tuneful, or when it's not, it's delightfully tasty. Her last album sounds like a mix of Martinis & Bikinis and Fan Dance. The sound of the first with the mood of the second.

Sam Phillips is very high on my list, I say it again. Her music is subtle, deep and rewarding.

> She makes Suzanne Vega sound dynamic sometimes (I like her too...)

she's great!

Yea, I saw her back when she first started getting famous at the Vic....I do believe Sue Miller booked that show. Sue brought her to Chicago before she was famous to the West End, maybe...long time ago.

I haven't listened to "Martinis and Bikinis" in a while... maybe it's time to dust it off and give it a spin.

Way back in college I saw Suzanne Vega open for Ani DiFranco in Buffalo, NY. I was way more familiar with Vega @ that point than Ani, and was more excited to see Vega, truth be told. I do recall Ani talking about how Suzanne would stay at her parents' house every time she'd play Buffalo.

I like her.

Martinis and Bikinis is a great record. And, you know, when you're married to one of the best producers in rock (T-Bone Burnett), that helps a bit, too. Of course, you gotta have great songs to start with, and she does.

She and T-Bone have been divorced for a while now.

Well then, it didn't hurt those old records.

I think the new one is the first one she's put out since then.

Yeah, T-Bone's guiding hand definitely boosts those records, but as you say, the songs were plenty good on their own.

Saw her last night at the Beachland Ballroom and was very pleasantly surprised. I got the Bikinis CD a couple years ago and it never really got traction with me. Last night I definitely got the Beatles vibe, plus more than a little early Andrew Bird. Of course, the violin plays into that.

And speaking of violins . . .

I've fallen madly in love with the Stroh violin! What a lovely sound!
