Going to Belize...

Recommended Posts

Hey all...

Got a wonderful deal to Belize for $180 RT from NYC so me and 3 other couples are heading to Belize...we are thinking of staying at Ambergris Caye or Caulker Caye. Then we were going to spend a night in Belize City so we can maybe catch a visit to some ruins from there. Just looking for some stories or recommendations..

If anyone is interested go on Orbitz and serch by flexible date and if you leave mid week from Jan-Jun and return on a monday or tue you get a round trip for $180! If you connect in Dallas and stay overnight there it is only $130 round trip! Flight is on American.

I've only been there through listening to others tales. It's on my "to-go" list for when I have a job and some of those paycheck things that come with a job. I hear it's a good place to get fish tacos and cheap beer. You must confirm this for me while you're there! :thumbup

I went the summer after sixth grade. Really enjoyed it, but not much advice (for obvious reasons). We stayed in a rain forest, at a hotel, and an electricity-less resort on a river. We visited the national zoo, went snorkeling, canoeing, and went to Xunantanich.

I did get a botfly in my back, actually, and still have a scar to show for it. None of the midwestern doctors knew what it was--they all thought it was just a bad infection. One of them killed it when they were trying to squeeze pus out and my body started pushing it out the next day. Awesome. Really, not THAT big of a deal, just something to look out for.

The blue hole sounded neat, but we didn't get to see it.

Reni and Emily did go a few years ago.

I went a couple of years ago. It was amazing, one of my best trips ever. We did a few days outside of San Ignacio in the Mountain Pine ridge area. We stayed on a river and it was amazing. Went to Caracol-amazing mayan ruins and it is easy to get over to Tikal in Guatamala if you are based near San Ignacio. We also did some canoeing in a cave and hiking around the area of our hotel.

Then for a few days we went to the beach at Placencia. It also was amazing-did some snorkeling. Sat our asses on the beach. It is a nice, smallish beach town. lots of hotel and restaurant options.

I have not been to to Ambergris, although friends have and loved it. It is were most of the tourism is.

The nationally certified tour guides are very well trained. I would highly recommend getting one if you are going to see any ruins. I'm not usually big on getting a guide for things, but they made the experience of seeing the ruins very full. Not only are they trained in history, but are naturalists and can point out wildlife you would never see on your own. Your hotel can help you get a good one.

I could go on and on. PM me if you want more info.

Have a great time-report back.
