PigSooie
Yep, Instant Classic. Hot damn. I love that song.
Mrs. Peel
Still my #1 too. Some great points. However, the line "You ain't the type to be travelin', so why not just stay." to a dude that's spent the better part of the last decade on the road doesn't seem to fit. If I had to guess, I'd say this song has more to do with Shonna than Patterson. Either way, a great, powerful song. I believe you are correct. I hear the lyrics a tiny bit differently than I originally did and they fit your theory more than mine.
Moss
And the best part (after reading complaints about ticket prices on other threads), Jason Isbell at the Bluebird in Colorado...wait for it... $14.00!
Mrs. Peel
I think that's what I paid for NYC too. FWIW, I may be the only one complaining about ticket prices in various threads.
CortezTheKiller
my favorite song has become streetlights. wow is that a great songI like the album a lot, but that song, for me, is head and shoulders above the rest.
CortezTheKiller
I believe you are correct. I hear the lyrics a tiny bit differently than I originally did and they fit your theory more than mine. This is 100% speculation on my part, but I get the sense that things between Jason and Patterson are good. I get the sense that his relationships with Shonna (for obvious reasons) and Cooley are not.
Mrs. Peel
It's hard to believe things are good between any of them.
Mrs. Peel
Well someone at NPR obviously likes the album so much they couldn't wait to air it because I heard 'Coda' as a bumper between two news stories on my way home tonight.

Moss
Rolling Stone review 3 Stars? And the new Springsteen gets 5? Wrong!
tangara
I think three stars is about right. I agree with the reviewer on the highlights - "No Choice in the Matter" and "Cigarettes and Wine", especially.
myboyblue
Rolling Stone reviewI'll just politely disagree. It's 4 or 4.5 for me. Maybe the thrill will wear off eventually but it hasn't yet.
Mrs. Peel
Wow, what an in-depth review. It reads more like the ones in People Magazine than a music publication.
solace
easily 4/5... in fact on the Pfork scale i'd say more like 8.3-8.

CortezTheKiller
easily 4/5... in fact on the Pfork scale i'd say more like 8.3-8.57.4 From the review:So while "Seven Mile Island" does reference a real place, and "However Long" definitely does seem to reflect an Obama-spurred sense of societal optimism, they're not the album's real lyrical standouts. That honor belongs to the ruminative "Streetlights", which shows us an itinerant musician calling home from some faraway bar.
mjpuczko
streetlights has become, far & away, my fave song on the album & approaching my fave isbell song. he's a master of the reminiscing drunk in a bar.

tangara
7.4 From the review: So while "Seven Mile Island" does reference a real place, and "However Long" definitely does seem to reflect an Obama-spurred sense of societal optimism, they're not the album's real lyrical standouts. That honor belongs to the ruminative "Streetlights", which shows us an itinerant musician calling home from some faraway bar. That's a pretty apt review. I thought this line was spot on: His occasional bar-band leanings may cause some to miss that Isbell is an invigorating songwriter and one of the better lyricists of his generation. I never think his lyrics get enough credit. He's a fantastic storyteller. This line was a bit of a "whuh?", though: Sure, "Blue" sounds like Los Lonely Boys filtered through RHCP's "Under the Bridge"...
CortezTheKiller
I really don't like "Blue." So I won't argue with Pitchfork's position on it. Sounds cheesy to these ears.
mjpuczko
that is the one song i immediately did not like.
solace
i still say the guitar playing on that song is straight out of a John Mayer composition...
