Listenin' to 'em on "Pandora Radio"

Recommended Posts

Being the music geeks that it appears that many/most of ya'll are, you may already be aware of and tuned in to this but I thought I'd pass on this tip to anyone who hasn't yet discovered it... There's a really cool website called "Pandora Internet Radio" (www.pandora.com) that allows you to create something like a quasi-customized jukebox.

I could prattle on about all of its features (skip a Ryan Adams song ya don't care for, add some Radiohead, give thumbs-up to "Look at Miss Ohio," etc.) but it's pretty easy to use and it's fairly intuitive so I'll spare you the details here (unless someone has any specific questions... I haven't really used it for much more than just listening to Wilco and similar singing/songwriting artists so I may not have many specific answers).

I starting using it in April by creating a "Wilco station." It spun "I Must Be High" for me and I don't know why but when that geetar crashed through my tiny lil' iBook speakers I was hooked. Pardon my site pimpin' but I don't work for them and as far as I can tell they're a not-for-profit thingy so I here's hoping that VC's protocol police don't punch me in the neck. Mostly, I'm just a geeked up newbie trying to contribute something that hasn't already been covered. (Please advise if I'm already a miserable failure.)

Anyway, check it out. And let me know what Wilco they play for you!

My very first Pandora song was Can't Stand It. I decided to just keep one station over the three or four years I have been using it and just overload it with all the music I like to listen to, so everyonce and awhile I'll get like The Zombies going into John Coltrane going into Scott Walker going into Pavement going into David Cassidy (there's always one misfire each time, but I totally know all the words to Come On Get Happy).

Hey fellow newbie! I too use Pandora, as an app on my itouch though. They play a pretty large variety of Wilco for me(everything from AM to SBS with side projects too mixed in), which is really cool in and of itself, but it's also been great for discovering new people. Through Pandora I found Fleet Foxes and The Decemberists. I like it because even if you think you don't like a band- a song plays and you realize that you acually do!

Good call on Pavement, Mike. I've got Pavement cassettes so I never get around to listening to them any more. Pandora is perfect for bands like that. I'll add them to my whacked-out Devandra Barnhart/Polyphonic Spree station. :stunned

All the Pavement albums are re-released with tons of extra songs, I highly recommend re-buying them! :thumbup

Reminds me.. One of these days I'll probably hear my first Phish song and my world will cave in on itself when I discover hey, Mikey likes it! Until then, I'll just continue to roll my eyes and think "You silly dirty hippie," every time I see or hear mention of them.

Ha ha ha. Watch out for Waste. If you want to hate Phish, hearing that song will make it damn hard to keep it up. Oh and welcome aboard.

You are a miserable failure. Just kidding. Pandora has been around for quite some time now, actually. Other good sites for hearing music are Lala.com and blip.fm. The latter is like Twitter, but with songs AND 140 character messages. It's completely addicting - build a profile and become a DJ, start finding songs and 'blipping' them [like tweeting] and connect with other DJs, find new music, etc. Plenty of Wilco on there, including some rare tracks, like "Burned." http://blip.fm. It's awesome.

Pandora is a bit glitchy. Maybe it's my computer at work, which is by no means a great one.

But aside from some glitches, it's just totally fucking rad. I love it.

Yeah for the Pavement mentions!

Funny how way back when, Pavement was the darlings of the critics and Wilco was sort of under the radar. Now, it's hard to find someone who's even *heard* of Pavement let alone heard them, while Wilco is everywhere.

Well, not everywhere. That would be Miley Cyrus, but you get the point.
