Wow - that's a long interview. I don't know anything about this guy (and I obviously need to! What I heard was great!!!) but it was nice to hear him mention Jay Bennett.

Thanks for the link. :)

Tommy is an all-time great.

As brilliant as he is as a songwriter, he's just as good a guitar player.

And a great singer.

And just phenomenal live.

If you like edgy, crunchy melodic guitar pop jammed with hooks, check out Tommy.

All-time top-10 artist for me.

Would you or anyone care to rank the top 5 (or whatever) albums for a newbie? He's been around awhile and I'd love to hear what you all consider his best.

Would this be the guy that's on the Keene Brotheres album with Robert Pollard I assume? I have been wanting that but they only had the vinyl at the local record store and $25 was too steep for me.

yep, that's the guy ... member of every post-gbv pollard live lineup as well

Keene Brothers record is brilliant ... $25 is ridiculous ... just go to the factory of raw essentials & buy directly from pollard: http://www.rockathonrecords.com/keene_brothers.html

death of the party & beauty of the draft are as good as anything pollard as ever done

keene's solo stuff is phenomenal, too

The Keene Brothers is a true "rock" record in every sense of the word. It's also one of the best things Pollard has ever done.

agree

a lot of hard-core pollard purists complain that it's too "down the middle" and not experimental enough

but jesus crap, great songs, awesome playing, superb big sound, some of bob's best vocals

i can't listen to the circus devils, other than a track or two here and there, but the hard-core bob apologists love it because it's so out there

give me keene brothers or zero to 99 and let it rock

anybody in the Philly area or New Jersey ... Tommy will be playing a few full-band dates this fall along the East Coast, including Club Cafe in Pittsburgh on Sept. 16, opening for Superchunk at the 9:30 Club in Washington on Sept. 17 and Sept. 18 at the Record Collector - a record store with a performance space - in Bordentown, New Jersey.

in Pittsburgh & Bordentown, Tommy will be playing the legendary "Songs from the Film" in its entirety, which should be very cool

tommy does not play out very often, but he is just fantastic live

a few other dates:

Sept. 8 Milwaukee

Sept. 9 Chicago

September 22 L.A.

Sept. 24 San Francisco

Could sendspace this if there's any interest:

Tommy Keene 1984 Reflection Studios, Charlotte, NC (STU) Outtakes from Songs From The Film

Tommy Keene

Reflection Studios

Charlotte, NC

1984

01 Call On Me

02 Run Now

03 Fall Down Too

04 The Story Ends

05 Gold Town

Total Time: 17:30

Tommy Keene: Guitar and Vocals

Billy Connelly: Guitar and Vocals

Ted Nicely: Bass

Doug Tull: Drums

Produced by T-Bone Burnett and Don Dixon

As most Tommy Keene fans know, the album "Songs From The Film" was essentially recorded twice, first with T-Bone Burnett and Don Dixon producing, and then again, for the version that was ultimately released, with Geoff Emerick producing. Some of the Burnett/Dixon recordings were later released on the "Run Now" vinyl EP. Those tracks, plus a few more outtakes, were then included on the 1998 CD reissue of "Songs From The Film."

These five tunes are recordings from the original sessions that remain unreleased. Four of them were re-recorded for the second version of the album, but none of these particular recordings appear on any officially released version of "Songs From The Film." I believe these are unfinished mixes, as I've heard more polished versions of some of these songs.
