Iowan
This is true, but for me personally, I can't get past an annoying vocal style. I like the music of Neutral Milk Hotel, but I cannot stand Jeff Mangum's voice, so I can't listen to any NMH records. I love interesting/unique voices. But if I don't like a band's vocal style, there's a very small chance of me liking their music overall. I think I just tend to put up w/singers that have "bad" voices if I like the band and the songwriting. Eventually, I start to enjoy the singer. Jeff Mangum is a perfect example of this for me. He's so nasal, yet he writes some killer songs. I'm such a sucker for a good song, that I eventually look past and learn to love the bad vocals. That's just me though. Guest Alan
My THS hate goes further than the vocals. They seem to write the same song over and over again, same themes, same sorts of melodies, even the arrangements rarely vary. I also can't stand the E-street band either so there ya go. That's just me though.Well...being a lyric fan, I always listen closely to the vocals, to figure the lyrics out. So if the vocals are unappealing, it's pretty much game over. Jeff Mangum's vocals drive me crazy. To me, it sounds like he's trying too hard to not sound good. It's just...shit, in my opinion. Which is a shame, because most of the NMH songs I've heard have good/great arrangements. And I agree with Alan. I strongly dislike Springsteen, so the watered down knock-offs that THS release are just worthless to me.
Iowan
I can't really place it w/THS, but something about them really clicks w/me, and a lot of my friends. Maybe it's that I'm from a shit hole town 2hrs south of Minneapolis. I guess, I just really like the guitar licks and I love the lyrics. To me their songs have a lot of muscle behind them, and I love that. I understand they repeat the same themes, and don't necessarily grow alot, but that's kind of what they're all about. Like the DBTs, they're music is linked to a regional identity and how that's shaped their view. I can totally understand why a lot of people wouldn't like them very much. However, I fucking love 'em. I can relate to them sonically and lyrically more than a lot of bands. Plus, the E Street Band comparison is really played out, IMO. THS is a lot louder and sonically raw (on record that is). Much less of a focus on classic R&B than the Boss.
rwilson580
I should keep my mouth shut, because until today I had no idea who The Hold Steady were. But after checking the samplers on Amazon of the album in question -- it sure sounds like the guy is doing Springsteen. Specifically early "The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" Springsteen. Except for the couple songs where they are clearly doing Thin Lizzy. BUT...I love that era Springsteen, and Iowan mentioned this album in a Wilco thread. So I'm going to check it out. People who make up their minds based upon Amazon sound bites are...um, not too smart.
JessieOK
Driving along earlier tonight, my ipod shuffled to a live version of Soul Asylum's Runaway Train and I suddenly became desperate to hear Wilco cover this song (sorry, I love it...I'm a product of the 90's alt music scene). So, I guess that's not a whole album- maybe they could just play that one song nine or ten times in a row
Guest McGuffin
Pick any of the Stones studio albums released between 68-72. You'd have rock, country, country tinged rock, gospel, a little psychedelia and an epic rocker. Perfect spectrum of music in the same vein as Wilco.

JessieOK
if this happened I would have to stop liking Wilco. so just for clarification...is it not cool to like Wilco and a played out 90's Soul Asylum song? I'm still relatively new to all of this.
Ghost of Electricity
it's cool to like whatever you want. Personally i can't stomach Soul Asylum, but if you do, hey, that's fine by me.

Perhaps this is the point of your post...but there IS a Wilco cover of that song available. I wish I had a link available for you... MWB
Good point. They'll have to throw in something like this to make it add up to six: They're already there.
