visions
I have been a Wilco fan for many years but this was only my second time seeing them live...it was easily better than the first time I saw them in 2007 in Melbourne. What a rocking show. I don't know where these guys get the energy to crank out such long sets night after night, especially Nels and Glenn who attack their instruments with such ferocity for the entire gig. Couldn't have asked for much more setlist wise. Was really hoping to hear the Big Star covers and my personal fave Wilco song, Summerteeth, but otherwise it was great. I'd forgotten what a cool song Muzzle Of Bees is and it really comes alive in the live setting. Probably my fave song of the night. Other pleasant surprises for me were Box Full of Letters, Forget The Flowers and Can't Stand It. John's 5mins in the spotlight for Just That Simple was also really cool. On You Never Know, Nels had his double guitar which I thought was cheesy but brilliant considering the song sounds like a lost 70's AM radio anthem. One thing I noticed was how much care and thought the guys put into the show. The attention to detail is evident throughout, from the great lighting work to the hilarious and uber cool band introductions. That said, the show still feels really spontaneous. Some of Jeff's banter was pretty amusing:[after a request for Just A Kid]"Just a kid? Yeah we could play that but no one knows it. Who here knows just a kid? (a few people raise their hands) See, no one knows it!" [after Just That Simple]"That was a song from our first album...this next song is also from our first album. Yes, we've come here tonight to promote our first album!" All up it was a great night out at the best live venue in Melbourne (IMO).I only wish now that I had a ticket to the second show tonight but sadly it's all sold out. I've no doubt it will be another cracking evening.
kungfuonion
Some of Jeff's banter was pretty amusing:[after a request for Just A Kid]"Just a kid? Yeah we could play that but no one knows it. Who here knows just a kid? (a few people raise their hands) See, no one knows it!" actually it was even better than that... the guy said "but it's awesome!", and Jeff replied "I know it's awesome, but no-one knows it..." titchyman
Great show/setlist. Band was in top form, and Jeff was pretty talkative which was good to see! Nels double neck guitar is possibly the ugliest guitar i've ever seen though..!!! Highlights: Nels shredding it up on Impossible Germany, and at least thats what you said - was pretty close to perfect. Also.. I love the no photography policy! First gig i've been to in ages that wasn't full of people holding up iphones. Enjoy the second show tonight for those lucky enough!
visions
I agree it was so refreshing to not have a sea of phones held up in the air but I gotta say I wished I had my real camera with me. With all the great lighting and my perfect spot in the center of the venue I could have taken some amazing photos.

SarahC
Mende!! That is great!! Jeff remembers most of us long-time VC'ers. Which is awesome. Glad the show was good. Muzzle kicks so much butt live. Just That Simple is always so great to hear. I know which Courtney you are talking about I think, Ms. Y's friend, maybe?

SarahC
yep, thats the one!she is so nice! (Just like Ms. Y)... they both came through chattanooga and we had coffee a year or 2 ago. Good times! It's really funny how small the Wilco-community is (Wilcommunity!) we run into each other all over the world.

We were right behind your left shoulder and sat next to Courtney at the Auckland show. What a great time we had at both Wilco shows in Melbourne. Both nights we met excellent people. No recordings of the Melbourne shows on Dimeadozen yet, there are some of the Sydney shows.
