Sir Stewart
Fresh Air story This is interesting stuff. For awhile I've been preoccupied with the "screen invasion" this guy talks about.
Guest Speed Racer
I was watching a movie on my laptop the other night, while surfing Facebook on my iPod, while texting a friend. During the opening credits of the film, I navigated out of Facebook and bought the opening song on iTunes, and halfway through the film, I bought Magnolia using the Amazon app. For one of my courses in college, our professor assigned us a media fast - 48 hours without using ANY media that was not related to school work. No reading for pleasure, no computer use, no nothing. It was hard at first, but very enjoyable once I got used to it. That was probably the last time I had any dramatic improvements in my guitar playing.
Sir Stewart
The only real writing I've gotten done in the past year plus has been when I had no access to the web. Not just choosing to stay off the web, I mean literally no access.

bigshoulders
Interesting concept— media fasting. I would have to be on vacation before I could ever withdraw like that. (Like many of you, I'm sure, I work at a computer.) It's kind of sickening to think about how much this stuff infiltrates our waking life. It's insidious.

Good Old Neon
This thread reminds me why I appreciate the Kindle. Its detractors continually criticize its lack of functionality – that it can only really be used to do one thing – read books. Which, thank god for that, otherwise, I’d be checking email, news sites, etc, every five minutes.
sonicshoulder
Anybody read the Rolling Stone piece on Ray Kurzweil, Feb. 2009. Pretty interesting/scary?
