Magnetized
Go here to sign up and cast your vote. Jeff's son Spencer has a blog which I highly recommend to you, and his post last night reminded us to check out Beck's Record Club and vote for Wilco's session. For those not familiar with the concept of the Record Club, here it is from the website: Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. This site is truly cool, and there have been some good sessions. One of the nicest things about signing up is that you can view all the videos from everyone's sessions in one place--looks like about 60-70 of them. Beck's going to release a physical CD of the top 10 vote getters. Right now the voting is heavily weighted toward the better known covers (Velvet Underground, INXS, Leonard Cohen) so we need to show some love for our boys. (Spencer even gets to sit in on a few tracks.) Check it out and vote!

Seriously, though, it is kind of a pain to vote because you have to register and jump through a couple of hoops but it's a small price to pay to have recorded versions some of these Skip Spence songs! That session from late June 2009 featuring Jamie Lidell, Feist, James Gadson, Wilco (and progeny), etc., were such a treat to watch... Oh, and I don't mean to detract from the Wilco/Skip Spence vote too much, but if you do sign up, you all should also vote for the version of INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart" with lead vocals by St. Vincent's Annie Clark (and contributions by Os Mutantes and Liars' Angus Andrew). It's stunning.
Shakespeare In The Alley
Those sessions are all pretty easy to find as MP3s already. I don't really get the point of this compilation, but the voting thing is a cool idea. But Beck mostly needs to return to Beck material.

MP3s suck, sound-wise, so it'd be nice to have a lossless, mastered version of these recordings. But hey, you don't have to buy it...
Preferred B
I don't think it says anywhere that the top ten songs from the vote will absolutely be the songs on the compilation. Which makes sense, since it would be kind of weird to have a Record Club album with 8 INXS songs and 2 VU or something. I'm sure they'll take it into account, though. Shakespeare In The Alley
Eh. I probably will buy it, honestly. But I feel like it kinda defeats the purpose of the project. I loved that they were basically just a bunch of musicians fucking around in the studio. And I loved the covering a whole album aspect. An officially mastered/released compilation isn't the same in either aspect. And I want new Beck music, not a new release of music I already have. Those are the only complaints I have. Well, I agree in terms of the whole album aspect. I wish they'd just release everything (well, maybe not Yanni) but they probably deemed it not commercially viable to do so. After all, how many people have even ever bought the original "Oar" record, much less would buy a cover version of it? In terms of the "musicians fucking around in the studio," obviously they all knew that these sessions were being filmed and posted on the Web, so that casual ideal is sort of shattered right away. I mean, it's not as if these were recordings that were made and then tossed into a vault somewhere for 20 years; they were put up to be viewed right away. And given that, why not put out something that's a formal, mastered version for people who want that and not some shitty, ghetto MP3s ripped from the video streams? That's all I'm saying. dthedust
each song was done one day at a time right?if you release an album you "should" put more time into the songs.the vu's heroin was the biggest letdown to me,but waiting for my man was superb.either way id buy the album just for the war and peace oar cover, skip spence would be proud.
