Jonny Abrams
Hope you don't mind me posting this here and that I'm not treading on anyone's toes by starting a new topic for this. I had the honour the other day of getting to interview Greg from Deerhoof and he spoke quite a bit about their collaboration with Jeff Tweedy, his sons (esp. Spencer) and the trouble Wilco left them in for a soundcheck while supporting them! It's in here... http://jonnyabrams.blogspot.com/2011/11/interview-deerhoof-part-1.html Hope you enjoy reading,Jonny
choo-choo-charlie
Why are you afraid to post this? Weird. Doesn't sound like they exactly enjoyed their time with Wilco -- almost seem kind of bitter about the difference between the two bands.

You never know, some forums get a bit prickly about that kind of thing. Glad this place isn't one of those places Your impression of what Greg said might be right but it wasn't the impression I got - he was laughing constantly while he was saying it; came across more as self-deprecation than bitterness. Well with out a [laughs, chuckles] preceding the response, to me, it reads like straight-up bitching rather than self-deprecation. Either way, nice interview.
LouieB
I think they have their math all wrong as far as the Tweedy-Miller kids are concerned. They weren't that old in 2007. I saw them open for Wilco at one of the Auditorium shows and they sounded like crap, so the story of not really getting a proper soundcheck sounds about right. I understand they are very good, but that night they really sounded awful. Too bad. LouieB

radiowilco
Thanks for sharing - really enjoyed reading it a lot. Greg comes across so well in the interview setting... I saw them open for Radiohead at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley in 2006. I had not listened to them or seen them live... I was an immediate convert!!! Great band in and out of the studio - PERIOD! Again, nice piece.
barnyard pimp
Greg is one of the nicest people I have met! Big Deerhoof fan. I really wish I'd seen them open for Wilco (what tour was that?), although it sounds like it wouldn't have been ideal. I remember somebody sitting behind me at one night of the residency saying how Deerhoof were the worst opening band he'd ever seen. I just think they're incredible! That said, when I got the Deerhoof/Tweedy single in the mail, I didn't realize Jeff had just sung over "Behold a Marvel...", and I was already pretty used to Satomi's version on the last Deerhoof album. I think I prefer her take, but I love the idea, and can't wait to hear the Wayne Coyne one (or the Flaming Lips/Deerhoof EP!!).

I'll probably still buy the single but nothing the Flaming Lips does any more impresses me and the last album was so bad I've had to take them off the "buy without question" list and move them down to "try before you buy." That and the Dark Side of The Moon cover album made my ears bleed.

Their releases this year have been patchier but I suppose that's to be kind of expected.
