Wilco/Tweedy/UT-inspired cocktails.

Recommended Posts

A friend sent me this website: http://drinkify.org. Type in whatever music you're listening to, and it generates a suggested drink to accompany said music. Of course, I had to type in Wilco, and...the suggestion was:

  • "The Wilco" = a bottle of organic red wine, garnished with sugar.

Variations:

  • "The Jeff Tweedy" = a Miller High Life garnished with a wedge of watermelon
  • "The Uncle Tupelo" = 8 oz. Sipsmith Gin, 8 oz. Nordic Mist, 2 oz. Glenfiddich Scotch

I'm not a "fruit in my beer" kind of guy, but I'm intrigued by the combination of High Life and watermelon.

About the hack

Drinkify automatically generates the perfect* cocktail recipe to accompany any music.

* May not actually be perfect.

What APIs, tools or kit did you use?

  • The Echo Nest (http://the.echonest.com)
    • List of terms/genres that describe an artist
    • Audio summaries of top tracks (are their songs slow or fast, etc)

  • Proprietary Drinkify database
    • "Because booze still doesn't have an API..."

Yeah, so I was right -- they have a database of drinks and have manually associated certain artists with drinks that they seem to think fit... but everything else is based on an algorithm using track names, summaries, etc. to pick something for an artist not in their DB. Cool idea, but like I said - very hit & miss, at least for the artists I picked.

They should have a "suggest an alternative cocktail" button and have the site learn on its own. :)
