I'm going to Northern Michigan for a couple of days....recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hey will be heading to Traverse City and Mackinac Island in June...anyone have any must see sights? Planning Sleeping Bear and Wineries...otherwise don't have many things planned..

PS I guess I will be filling out tax returns on a private beach in Michigan if nothing else.

Sleeping Bear is great!

If its walleye you want, you cant do better than Leelanau Lake.

Also, check out Crystal Lake for its beauty. One just doesnt see that color blue in the midwest too often. There's a nice drive around the lake.

If you find yourself driving through Grayling, stop at Spike's Keg 'O' Nails for a good burger and a cold beer.

My grandparents had a cottage on Lake Margrethe and I have fond memories of the summers I spent there in the 60s and 70s. We ate a lot of burgers at Spike's in those days and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was still in business when I made my first trip to Grayling in almost 40 years in 2009.

HA!

My wife and kids are up there right now. My inlaws live up there and I go up at least once a year with the family. Love it.

For a nice day trip: go up the Leelanau Penninsula and check out some of the galleries in Leeland and Sutton's Bay.

Also, if you have kids, the beach in downtown Elk Rapids (about 15 min. north of downtown TC) is the best around. In June, the water is still pretty cold up there, but because the beach in Elk is pretty much one huge sandbar to about a 1/4 mile out, it gets warm faster. Plus, for kids, it's nice to have that shallow.

Also, adjacent to the beach there, there is a wonderful little swimming hole where the kids seem to congregate and splash around. It's a great little play area.

Plus, there is a great little strip of restaurants and shops along the strip that leads right up to the beach.

Elk Rapids is my favorite place in the area and is definitely best for families.

if you don't have kids with you, though, you probably want to stay in TC, proper, as it's a bit more lively.

A buffet is never worth it at any price. Sick.

My grandparents were born in Cheboygan Mich, and we used to spend summer holidays at Mullet Lake. I have foggy memories, but I recall a really huge fucking crucifix somewhere up there. Like Brazil Huge (probably not that huge).
