I used to listen to Billy Joel a lot as a kid- still have a soft spot for everything up until about the Nylon Curtain era.  Much of that was Phil Ramone.  Also, he produced (and/or engineered?) the NY sessions for Blood On The Tracks, which is an all-time favorite of mine.  Quite a career.  Rest in Peace.

One band not mentioned in the article above is The Band. I'm sure I remember him being interviewed on a doco I have somewhere where he was speaking of the Rock of Ages live album and how fond he was of the sound on that album.

 

I've just looked it up and it turns out he was one of the engineers on the record.
