According the news, he was 85. I hate to admit it, but I was not aware he was still with us. Most of those old timers are long gone, with a few exceptions: Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Lou Donaldson, and Herbie Hancock.

 

Listening to Señor Blues now in his honor. :cheers

Horace was of a slightly older group than Herbie and Wayne who were mere kids when they started to record on Blue Note. Silver was certainly retired for many years. Finger Poppin may have been the first jazz LP I ever bought used in a record shop in Minneapolis. Sad.

There was a  premature report of Horace's death earlier this year.  I was hoping that this report would prove to be premature, too, but I guess it's not to be.   RIP Horace.
