TCP
It's well past time that Mac gets his own Via Chicago thread. If you don't know who Mac DeMarco is he's one of this decade's most notable names in indie rock. He's released four studio albums, 2, Salad Days, This Old Dog, and as of today, Here Comes The Cowboy. He's also released two "mini LPs" Rock and Roll Night Club and Anther One. Mac was born in Duncan, BC (that's in Canada), grew up in Edmonton Alberta (that's also in Canada), and started his career in the Vancouver (that too is in Canada) indie rock scene. Mac's punk-rock inspired on stage antics earned him a reputation of being a bit of a rascal in his early days but his laid back attitude and strong songwriting endured himself to a legion of dedicated fans. As Mac has aged he's matured and that's been reflected in his music as well. At this point I'd wager he's right up there with Courtney Barnett as one of the millennial generation's greatest songwriters and one of the most important musical acts to come out of Western Canada since The New Pornographers. Plus he's played Solid Sound so he has the Wilco seal of approval! Here's a (creepy) music videos from his new record: I listened to the new album on the way into work, I need a few more listens (at least) to form a concrete opinion but so far I like what I heard. Though I get the feeling This Old Dog might be his best entry point into his discography.
DiamondClaw
Good thread, well deserved for Mac! I'm a fan. I listened to the new one today and liked it a lot. Overall I think This Old Dog is his best — I listen to that album all the time, feels like at least once a week. Salad Days and Another One are very good too. Any way you slice it, this guy has an unmistakable sound. Like you said, it's very laid back, but there's such a distinctive tone to the instrumentation. It just takes one or two notes to identify a Mac DeMarco song.

Yeah I feel like Mac really made a distinct guitar sound for himself with the clean DI sound and lots of tremelo, but I'm not hearing that much on this new album, though it still very much sounds like Mac. I'll agree with you about This Old Dog being his best, that record was my soundtrack to summer 2017. Another One is great too though, I feel like a lot of people overlooked it because it's a mini album but I think it's some of his strongest work. Also how great is the end to Baby Bye Bye? Very unexpected but fun!
remphish1
Mac is great! Really like Salad Days and 2. Seen him live a few times and even met him once. Seeing him in August can't wait!
