bböp
The title sponsor of the amphitheater at Chastain Park has probably changed at least five times over the years Wilco has been playing shows there, but the band keeps going back so the pay (and the payoff?) must continue to be good. I’ve never actually made it to a show at this particular shed myself, but I’ve heard some not-so-great things about it — or perhaps more accurately, about the audiences there — so perhaps someone can chime in about the atmosphere this time around… Here was the complete setlist, according to the folks at Wilcoworld (nice to see Many Worlds make its first appearance on this run, but can someone confirm whether it was the entire song or just the instrumental coda?): Wishful Thinking Evicted Handshake Drugs If I Ever Was A Child Meant To Be I Am Trying To Break Your Heart Many Worlds War On War Quiet Amplifier You Are My Face Whole Love Box Full Of Letters Annihilation Hummingbird Bird Without A Tail/Base Of My Skull Via Chicago Either Way Impossible Germany Jesus, etc. Heavy Metal Drummer I’m The Man Who Loves You ————————————————— California Stars Walken Monday> Outtasite (Outta Mind)
SarahC
It was the entire thing, and gosh it was beautiful. Jeff dedicated it to Pat’s partner Mae. We had a great time on the rail. Things have definitely changed there since last we visited in 2019. Now they wristband only the front row of the pit, and security was very strict about being close to your assigned seat. The atmosphere was pretty good regardless of the kinda uptight security. The band seemed to have a great time, and I don’t think chatting was super noticeable to them. Jeff did have a funny interaction where he made a really scary looking face at somebody (I’m guessing somebody did that thing where they turn their back to the stage to take a photo while the band plays), then he rolled his eyes like “can you believe these guys?” It was funny but also, c’mon people… do better. The show felt a little bit looser with more extended jams, prob due to many world, and bird w/out a tail, impossible Germany all being pretty drawn out. It was great though. Rain and cold was definitely the biggest downside of the show: we don’t expect it to be in the 50’s this time of year! I think it was definitely the coldest outdoor show I’ve seen. Firecracker Kid
Ah, Chastain Park. Come for the horrifically painful ingress and egress, but stay for the inevitable hours-long inane chatter from the crowd. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!! And, add in what SarahC briefly touched on re: the weather - a steady rain during the entirety of Waxahatchee’s set, the intermission, and the first hour or so of Wilco’s set, coupled with 50-degree temps - and you’ve got yourself a recipe for a lousy experience. Thankfully Jeff & co. rewarded the perseverance of the portion of the crowd that seemed to be fully engaged (largely located in the first few rows of the pit area from what I could tell) with a solid show. Limited on banter and playing right up until the curfew was appreciated for those of us trying to move along to the music to stay warm. Plus, the closing duet was a nice touch for this “old”, especially after seeing how many people had already wandered off by that point.
willywoody
Okay I was there in the pit with the somewhat douchie crowd. First off it was mid 50s and rained pretty hard during the Waxahatchie set. Was excited to see Katie and co. They were good but a couple of slower songs near the end, combined with the weather and the arriving ambivalent crowd, made me happy their set didn’t go any longer. Group of 30 something’s and their dad were in front of us with the dad gender typing the Waxahatchie band members. They decided Spencer was a girl. They were less talkie when Wilco started and the crowd seemed pretty attentive overall. Wilco crew turned the stage quickly and the rain mostly stopped for their entire set. It has been 15 years since last seeing Wilco which was at Solid Sound. I did go to about ten Wilco shows from 1997 to 2010, though. I don’t know most of the songs released in the past ten years, but I think they did play all of Many Worlds with Tweedy stating afterwards that it was the first time this tour. It really got jammy the last bit with Pat taking most of the lead. Hope we get a roadcase release for the show as it was a better performance than the actual experience attending the show. There was an incredibly loud singer right behind us for many of the songs, especially the slower ones. At least I had pretty good rain gear and remained dry and warm.
Albert Tatlock
Ta. So much talk of rain you could all be British. And perversely there has been so little of it here this spring.
