Damn. This one hurts. Justin Townes Earle was such a talent. Saw him a bunch of times and he always delivered.  An engaging performer but always sensed the sadness and fragility there.

I’m crushed. Way too young to go. So much talent, lost. I’ve been a fan for years but this was finally the year I planned to catch him live (pre-covid).

Fuck 2020.

Such a great loss that will surely deprive the world of a lot of great music that would've come from him. I believe I only saw him perform once - at Jazz Fest in NOLA about 11 years ago. He played on a small stage and delivered the goods on that particular day. A few years ago I was asked to organize a small music festival for a friend in the Mississippi Delta. The caveat was that there was no budget. I researched artists who had some interest in or connect with the artist whose memory was the focus of the event, and JTE came up somehow. I sent a Hail Mary e-mail to his people, and although I received a very quick "no" it was probably the nicest and most interested "no" I got in the process. The festival never happened, but I'll always appreciate the tone of the response I received from the JTE camp. Godspeed.

Steve Earle is going to release an album of JTE covers in January, with all proceeds going to JTE's daughter.

I expect it to be intensely emotional.  Wonder if he'll do "Mama's Eyes"
