    QUOTE(Paul B @ Sep 27 2006, 01:59 PM)

I thought it was a 3 way tie between REM, Neil Young and Nirvana...........but I'm not gonna argue......Bryan Adams it is!!

pfft R.E.M. Nirvana and Neil Young?

Mere Children compared to the Canadian sensation that is Bryan Adams.

  2. 01. Thom Yorke

    02. Prince

    03. Kurt Cobain

    04. Tom Waits

    05. Elliott Smith

    06. Jeff Tweedy

    07. P J Harvey

    08. Jack White

    09. Wayne Coyne

    10. Steven Malkmus

People I couldn't include due to technicalities.

    R.E.M.- 4 songwriter unit.

Sonic Youth- great music, but it's hard to call it pure songwriting.

  3. 60s

although i think Exile is the greatest and Zep hit their prime during the 70s, rock used half the decade to become bloated monstrocities. not to even bring up soft rock and disco.

the 60s had so much more to offer from rock to pop, jazz to blues, ska to reggae. folk, country and gospel too. the changes, strides and revolutions within each genre have been unmatched since. the 70s had moments where all that change and progess was refined and developed to near perfection but a lot of it was bastardized as well.

Good point...I think my point of the greatest ever was just that I believe there are more 5 star albums in the 70s than any other decade. Like seriously...there are 5 star albums that don't even make the top 100 for that decade, because there are so many.

  4. That too - I should say that I did not have a TV back then, so I did not see this until years later.

I was only a boy when they did Unplugged. It was November 1993, so I was 9 1/2....my mom didn't let me watch MTV till I was 12. By that time, MTV had started to suck, so I barely watched it.

Personally, I don't find watching concerts to be as exciting as some people do....at least that one...It's so...morose. I enjoy the album, but it's hard watching him slumped over his acoustic guitar...just looking like death.

By the way, I have some rough mixes of Nevermind songs if anyone wants to hear them less produced... I just have to find 'em.

  5. thing is, i wouldn't dispute you calling Cobain one of the best songwriters of the last 25 years, i just would disagree...

Jack White, as great as he is, isn't even fit to hold Paul's jock, sorry.

maybe it's a generational thing? not that i was into the Mats' in their heyday (i got into them around '91), but still, there is 7-8 years between us in age if my assumption is correct, that could definitely account for some of the differences of opinion.

Fair enough... Sorry if I came off a little harsh. I'm just very passionate about Nirvana, and I don't think they get a fair shake around here. I think people try to cut them down in order to counter balance the hype (as in, if we say they suck/ or were really average...we can pull down the mass hype.)

personally, I'm guilty of doing the whole "How close does it sound to a Beatles melody" test though...which maybe why songs of Cobain's like "About a Girl" and songs like "We're Going to Be Friends" of Jack White's outrank Westerberg's best to me.

Mayhaps that's it. I'm 22, you're 28. For people my age, Nirvana's music has had pretty much a shaping effect on...well everything.

  6. it's not, but the comments about Cobain's melodies over Westy's is imo. Westerberg is one of the top songwriters of the last 25 years, without a doubt top 10 easily. Cobain... i'd consider about 5-10 Nirvana songs that compete w/ the best Replacements songs, but that's about it.

the last time i listened to Nirvana (about 6 years ago), i realized how much i overhyped them even myself back in '91-94

See, I think calling Westerberg a top 10 songwriter is as much bullshit as you think me calling Cobain one is. I mean, I'd rank Westerberg in like, the Jack White range as far as songwriters go; which is to say, not very high.

Nirvana's best songs don't compete with The Mats best...they outshine them ten fold. But that's just me.

  7. Right now, I'm in a 70s phase. Everything 70s.

Mostly Bowie, Neil, Costello, The Clash, Springsteen. But also Roxy Music, Eno, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin (Physical Graffiti), T. Rex, Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sly, Nick Drake, Blondie, Pere Ubu etc. I'm also developing an unhealthy obsession with the disco beat; even though I think most disco is kind of meh, when employed right, the disco beat makes me quiver and shake.

I should've been born in 1955. Discuss the 70s here. Everything 70s. the early 70s folk, glam, kraut-rock, punk, post-punk, funk, soul, whatever. The 70s own me right now.

  8. I wouldn't call either one the king of melody, but I'll take Paul as the better songwriter.

Hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion. Ten years ago I thought Kurt was a God and that Paul was decent. Now it's the other way around. I listen to Paul constantly and I barely ever listen to Nirvana.

I was slightly annoyed at how he acted like my opinion had no validity. The way he dismissed it.

I wouldn't say Cobain was the King of melody, but I'd say when he wanted to, he spun out some melodies that much better songwriters would be proud of. It's worth noting that Paul McCartney counts "Lithium" among his favorite songs.

Personally, I find validation in my Nirvana fandom, not from the critics (who do...overhype them a bit) but from the fact that Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello have all made very favorable comments about Kurt. I think Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello especially, know a great song when they hear one, since both are melodic Gods.

I really think The Replacements are just sort of this Mid-west legend that have been built up by their proponents to be larger than life; and I'm not just saying in terms of Nirvana. Forget about Nirvana for a second. I just think in general, The Mats were second tier 80s. Next to The Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Joy Division, New Order, Husker Du, The Smiths, and other 80's "alternative" bands, I think The Mats pale.

Granted I would still rather listen to Paul crap in a can than spin Pearl Jam records.

in my mind, frank's the best i've ever heard.

    yay! i'm a frat boy & i didn't know it.

Frank is pretty fucking good. His genius is in taking a little melodic hook and sticking it deep in your brain. It doesn't hurt that he has Kim Deal singing back up.

Hahaha, I was just busting dude. :cheers Though I drink like a fratboy, and a pirate. :pirate

  9. frank is probably the best melodic songwriter i've ever heard (well, besides the beatles). i've been listening to nirvana since 92 & i just started listening to black/pixies like 4 years ago. same with the mats/westerberg. most of nirvana's music bores me now. hell, i listen to the foo fighters way more than nirvana.

ehh Frank being the best other than The Beatles? What about Elvis Costello? Neil Young? Keith Richards/ Mick Jagger? Bob Dylan? Van Morrison? David Bowie? Michael Stipe/ Peter Buck? Joe Strummer?

I'm not arguing that The Pixies are great, and to me, They're very close in terms of quality to Nirvana (basically on the same level.)

I hate The Foo Fighters. Husker Du for frat boys I say :-P

  10. i like nirvana quite a bit but to say kurt writes better melodies than westerberg is a bit ridiculous. anyway, neither of htem hold a candle to frank black.

How so? What does Westerberg have that holds a candle to "About a Girl" in terms of melodicism? Nothing to be quite frank. Most of The Replacements melodies are pretty average to me. "I Will Dare" is probably my favorite Westerberg melody, and even that, Is inferior to a good 5-8 Nirvana songs.

eh personally Kurt > Frank (like a hair below Kurt) >>>>>>>>>Paul

I got into The Replacements when I was 18, and Nirvana when I was 12. Nirvana still gets spins; The Mats don't. Not saying I'm the ultimate beacon of music...but that says something to me that an album I've listened to 1,500 times brings me more pleasure than one I've listened to like 150 times.

I dunno. The Replacements wouldn't make my top 50 bands anymore. Nirvana'd make my top 20, The Pixies would make my top 20-25. I just don't think The Mats are in that league.

  11. wow

when i think of nirvana, one of hte last things i think of is their melody. westerberg was great at that.

Well...maybe you don't listen enough. "About a Girl" is a better melody than anything Westerberg could ever muster. So is "Come As You Are". So is "In Bloom". That chorus is pure Beatlesque pop magic.

Kurt is pretty reknown for his melodic ability...at least outside of this board :-P.

I'm sorry...I just think as a whole this board gives Kurt no respect. Is Nirvana overrated? Sure. But worse than SOUNDGARDEN? PEARL JAM? I'm sorry, all of those bands are very heh...low on the quality rung imo.

I listened to Ten yesterday, side by side with Nevermind. Nevermind still pleases. It still is jam packed with great tunes and melodies. I giggled through most of Ten.

  12. Me neither.

    But definitely....... Paul > Kurt......Mats > Nirvana

    I disagree.

As much as you can over Nirvana is overhyped, Kurt runs rings around Paul as a melodicist.

I've always considered The Replacements decidedly 2nd tier. Let it Be is a good album; Tim is inconsistent. Nirvana on the other hand has 3 great albums.

So I'd say, Nirvana > Mats. but that's me. Kurt's 8th best song to me is better than any mats.

And God...who ever said Still Feel Gone is better than Nevermind...I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. UT is overestimated on this board because of their Wilco connection.

I am a music fan; a real music fan, not a jock/frat boy. And Nevermind ranks among my top 10 favorite albums ever.

  13. Well the smart money's on harlow and the moon is in the street

And the shadow boys are breaking all the laws

And you're east of east saint louis and the wind is making speeches

And the rain sounds like a round of applause

And napoleon is weeping in a carnival saloon

His invisible fiancee's in the mirror

And the band is going home, it's raining hammers, it's raining nails

And it's true there's nothing left for him down here

And it's time time time, and it's time time time

And it's time time time that you love

    And it's time time time

And they all pretend they're orphans and their memory's like a train

You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away

And the things you can't remember tell the things you can't forget

That history puts a saint in every dream

Well she said she'd stick around until the bandages came off

But these mama's boys just don't know when to quit

And mathilda asks the sailors "are those dreams or are those prayers?"

So close your eyes, son, and this won't hurt a bit

Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time

And it's time time time that you love

    And it's time time time

Well things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl

The boys just dive right off the cars and splash into the street

And when they're on a roll she pulls a razor from her boot

And a thousand pigeons fall around her feet

So put a candle in the window and a kiss upon his lips

As the dish outside the window fills with rain

Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart

And pay the fiddler off 'til i come back again

Oh it's time time time, and it's time time time

And it's time time time that you love

    And it's time time time

And it's time time time, and it's time time time

And it's time time time that you love

    And it's time time time
