  1. Billy Corgan gets an A- for melodies and a D+ for lyrics, and an uhh I dunno.. He's a good guitar player.

The pumpkins were one of the three first bands I liked; Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and STP.

I still love Nirvana, and can't stand STP; my feelings about the Pumpkins are somewhere in the middle. Siamese Dream is always excellent; everything else they did is a mixed bag imo.

  2. My favs:

    01. The Beatles

    02. Bob Dylan

    03. The Rolling Stones

    04. Neil Young

    05. David Bowie

    06. The Velvet Underground

    07. Van Morrison

    08. R.E.M.

    09. Wilco

    10. The Clash

    11. Radiohead

    12. Nirvana

    13. The Band

    14. Led Zeppelin

    15. Elvis Costello

    16. Bruce Springsteen

    17. Sonic Youth

    18. Gram Parsons

    19. Stevie Wonder

    20. Jimi Hendrix

  3. I hated the album at first.

But the past few days I've listened to it constantly.

It's not the masterpiece people are proclaiming it as; a lot of the lyrics are kind of trite and straight forward, and I'm sorry "Shake It Off" is still a terrible song, and the rockers are corny as hell.

That being said, it's not a terrible album. There are some beautiful melodies, and some of the songs do have heh a lot of emotional depth. the title track is great, "What Light" is great, and "On and On and On", though a bit sentimental, is moving in it's own way.

Even a lot of the songs with terrible lyrics ("Either Way", "Hate it Here") have good melodies.

It's not a masterpiece, but it does have it's own merits. I hope it continues to grow on me; I'd love to enjoy it as much as some people on here do. I don't see that happening, but given my history with this band, and what they've given me, I'm willing to give it a shot.

Is it inferior to Summer Teeth and YHF? Probably. Has the quality of Wilco albums gone down since Jay left? Probably. But very few bands ever get to make a ST or a YHF. So I've tried to stop being a dick about the album and just giving it a shot.

Granted you don't have to...it's your time, and you can spend it anyway you choose.

  4. well...I'm giving it more spins.

I'll be honest. I hated AGIB at first; now it's gone up about a star and half for me.

I've been spinning it all day to try to get into it.

The first 4 songs are growing on me, and the last two as well.

The middle, isn't doing it for me; I still think Walken and Shake it Off are lame... and that the lyrics as a whole are a step down, but there's some beauty in this record in particular the title track and "What Light".

I'm really hoping this will grow on me, as I imagine it'll be the last Wilco album of the decade.

Sorry if I was a pretentious prick; I talk before I think sometimes.

  5. Another person over here who wasn't expecting pitchfork to dig it. :wave

Maybe SBS shouldn't be written about. It's great music. It feels good to listen to. What else can you say about it?

Wilco has never been to me, just about feel good music.

Wilco has always been about the layers of complexity, intellectually stimulating and emotionally gripping. In the five years since YHF came out, I still find a sound on it I've never heard before each time I play it; same with Summer Teeth, and AGIB. Being There, though lacking that complexity, was just a great Exile on Main St cum Gilded Palace of Sin style record. There's no such greatness on SBS.

Sky Blue Sky is Wilco's first product; it's not a piece of art as Summer Teeth, YHF or AGIB were. There's nothing challenging about it, and nothing engaging. Just sing songy and disposable. It's not terrible, since Tweedy is still one of the best melodicists of his generation, but that's all that the album has going for it.

Sky Blue Sky sounds like the difference between The Beatles and Wings; Everything adventureous has been airbrushed in favor of making a product to appeal to those who prefer "Jet" to "Helter Skelter".

That being said, the term dad rock is ridiculous; I'm only 23, and I could technically be a father. Age has nothing to do with music.

  6. Well then it is just the two of you.

Rollingstone magazine and SNL have both sucked for a while. I think they will definitely get alot of attention for this CD though. Hopefully positive.

I am not in the crowd of people that doesn't want Wilco to have any mainstream success. I wish they got radio play, were on late night shows often, and maybe even guest star on an episode of 7th Heaven. :thumbup

    7th Heaven, ooooh, 7th Heaven...

200th post and still haven't contracted any STDs. Maybe the rumors aren't true about this place after all....

And by the way, why do you guys have pictures of magazines with naked guys in them.... ? Hopefully you are females...

At this point my opinion on the record has been well stated.

    I don't like it.

But even being objective, I don't see how really smooth serene music made by middle age men will light rolling stone and MTV on fire.

If anything this is one of their least marketable albums. The first 3 appealed to both classic rock and indie sensibilities. YHF and AGIB were indie wet dreams. This? Well, I don't know how man.

I see it selling very low numbers.

  7. SBS should get at least a 4 star review...and be the lead feature in the review section.

i don't know about the cover - - they seem to go with people with broader mainstream appeal.

do you think SBS will go platinum? i see a couple of songs that could be hits - either way, hate it here,

I actually see SBS getting universally mediocre reviews from critics, and selling only about A.M. numbers, but that's me.

  8. ooooh. that is the selling point right there. jay bennet's nappy dreads?

oh and in regards to the initial question: buy AGIB, don't be a sap, it's a fantastic album. meditate during the drone and you'll understand the universe a bit better.

You know...and this sounds like hipster bullshit.

But the drone somehow works with the album.

Like if I skip the drone, the album seems far less effective. The drone gives it a sort of character. It could've been a little shorter (I get the itch to hit the >> button at about 9 minutes into the track) but I still enjoy it.

  9. This record is what Wico should have sounded like with Bennett. He had too standard of a style of playing that got kinda boring after a while(in my opinion). Tweedy and Cline are like a 4 fucking headed dragon spewing fire and killing unicorns.

PS- can you tell that i play guitar?

    I'm a big Bennett fan...but

God...can you say that thing about Unicorns again? It was amazing...a youtube link maybe?

  10. Yeah. Remember that Loggins and Messina song that closed with nearly four minutes of rhythmic grooving while the lead guitarist snaked his way through the thing with a note-packed lead that channels Television at their absolute artiest?

    I fucking hated that song.

    [/sarcasm]

Television is actually rocking though, and raw. Television isn't airbrushed easy listening. How you could compare this record to Television is beyond me.

  11. I'm willing to look over Jesusetc84's unwillingness to give in to the power of this album because of his signature...well played sir.

HAHAHA it just came to me one day when I was making breakfast...I went FRENCH TOAST IS BORN! and my roommate went: :huh :blink :no

  12. smooth jazz kicks ass.

I lost my focus after that.

I thought everyone knew that smooth jazz was heh...not a good thing.

I would've rather had more of a free jazz type Wilco record then a smooth jazz one.

  13. Impossible Germany...I can't help but think of smooth jazz.

My thoughts exactly. There's a lot of smooth jazz sounds on here.

Which explains a big part of why I don't like it.
