  1. An attempt at the ridiculous...

WTA is perhaps the Bill Clinton to SBS's Bush Sr., it is ultimately an improvement, but not quite the full scale change people probably wanted, and not quite up to par with the really great presidents or albums past Geogre Washington (which would be Being There), Abraham Lincoln (Summerteeth), FDR (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) or JFK (A Ghost is Born). Furthering this analogy Loose Fur One would be RFK, it should have been a president or a Wilco album, but sadly isn't, and Trace could only be Richard Nixon.

    Basically what you said.

  2. I hate stuff like this!

In the Wilco Book there are several sets of lyrics in the back, "Old Maid", "The High Heat", "My Words", "White Cat, New Life", and "Obituary". We've never heard the last two to my knowledge, and have never heard a full studio version of "My Words". AND I WANT THEM DAMMIT!

Maybe we can get a boxed set eventually.

  3. I recently purchased the Sunken Treasure DVD for the audio downloads. when i open the file extras.mov from the dvd i get "Error 47: Invalid URL. ()" I emailed support@wilcoworld.net on 6/13 and did not get a response. Is there anyone who can help me out or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks!

You've gotta be kidding me! I was just about to post this thread! :cheers

I've had the dvd for several years and was dragging my feet about getting the audio. Decided the other day to finally try and get it and got the same message.

Does anyone have the hookup for us?

  4. "Miraculously, the disparate strains within the group's catalog have somehow flowed together into a unifying aesthetic, largely due to Jeff Tweedy's distinctive singing voice and remarkable consistency as a songwriter."

This is basically what I've been saying for a long time. The Wilco sound is all based around Tweedy's voice and melodic style. Other than that, there really isn't one.

I'm kind of disappointed with the score, but I knew it wasn't going to do that well.

  6. The question explains it all.

On some level, I appreciate a great dvd. If well shot, well produced and interesting visually, it can add another layer to the music. But it also adds another layer of possible failure. You can have a great performance with a really boring visual. I have this trouble on some level with a lot of Unplugged/ acoustic shows. Even when the music's great, it's just a bunch of dudes hunched over acoustic guitars; not really that exciting to watch.

My eyes just tire of watching something faster than my ears tire of hearing something. I've only seen my favorite movie maybe 10 times, but have heard my favorite record probably 500 times.

So how do you prefer your live music? If given an option, would you rather hear a show on cd/iPod or watch it on DVD?

  7. Really? Wow, you and I have a completely different view on this song. You Are My Face STILL stands head and shoulders above every song on THIS album (as do Impossible Germany and Side With The Seeds).

I'll Fight is horribly repetitive and musically on the more bland side for a Wilco song as well. There's nothing even resembling a riff and, as previously mentioned, seems to hijack/reuse some previous Wilco melodies over again in a much more subdued way.

On & On is head and shoulders above I'll Fight and I'm not even sure I love On & On.

I still see this song as completing the "worst Wilco trilogy" of Country Disappeared>Solitaire>I'll Fight and because of that I continue to feel the same way about this album I felt about U2's "All That You Can't Leave Behind": I'm sure there's a great EP in here somewhere but all the filler is killing it. The only track I've continually gone back to on the second half of the album is "Sonny Feeling" which is starting to feel more and more like a more relaxed "Walken" to me.

See we just don't agree on anything.

"Country Disappeared" to me is a great song. Hearing that reminds me of the first time I heard "I Shall Be Released" by The Band or "Helpless" by CSN&Y. Really classic, genuinely moving stuff. Jeff's vocal delivery is flawless. He comes across as a Mid-Western version of John Lennon circa 1970. It's a really beautiul transcendental moment to me.

"You Are My Face" on the other hand reminds me of the bad side of 1970s A.M. rock radio. It starts off as a sort of lite rock staple, something safe and soft enough for Seals and Croft to sing, and then transforms into a bad Little Feat jam, with a terrible white boy funk boogie rock feel.

I'd probably rank EVERY song on W(TA) above "You Are My Face."

  8. I don't mind the christian imagery, its everywhere in our culture. What bothers me is the pro-war nature of the song in a time where we don't need people stepping up to say "i'll fight".

I don't see the song as pro-war at all.

Maybe I'm taking the lyrics too literally but to me "I'll Fight" is a comment on class differences. A well to do man pays off a poor man to take his place in the army; this has happened a lot through out history. The poor man dies, and the rich man lives.

It's really a pretty poignant comment on the fairness of our wars. For the most part it's not the blood of the rich that is spilling; they will grow up to have grandchildren, and die happy. The people fighting our wars are those who can't afford to do anything else, and all they get for it, as I'll Fight states is have "a place where (their) body can be layed."

I don't think it's fair to call this song pro-war at all. I think it's very anti-war, and is one of the better lyrics on this album.

  9. "You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them. So now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe." J. Michael Straczynski

I suddenly feel so much less embarassed about owning all of his comic books. Truly brilliant words.

  10.

I was watching this the other day, and thinking about how sad it is that Jay wasn't even featured in the video. Now it's even more distressing.

Our love is all of God's money

    Everyone is a burning sun.

    R.I.P. Jay.

  11. What a shock to pop onto the board and discover such a tragic thread. Jay was a tremendously important part of Wilco's most impressive era as songwriters and recording artists, and he leaves behind a respectable body of work as a solo artist. Like another poster before me said, he participated in three of the greatest albums ever made, and his talents will always be remembered by music fans the world over. What a devastating turn of events.

Let's not forget his contributions to the Mermaid Avenue albums. Who knows, maybe he's jamming with Woody right now.

  12. Mine is more of a best of Tweedy, in order to give it a proper length:

    01. Screen Door

    02. Gun

    03. Black Eye

    04. The Long Cut

    05. Passenger Side

    06. Radio King

    07. Misunderstood

    08. I Can't Keep From Talking

    09. California Stars

    10. Via Chicago

    11. Remember The Mountain Bed

    12. Jesus, Etc

    13. A Magazine Called Sunset

    14. Laminated Cat

    15. The Family Gardener

    16. Spiders (Kidsmoke)

    17. The Ruling Class

    18. Impossible Germany

    19. Everlasting (not my top choice, but the album needs a closer)
