  1. I should say that I have never been in love with Nirvana. I like some of their songs. They brought rock back to the top of whatever, so my hat is off to them for that. That whole Unplugged series/show was a bit to slicked up for me in general.

Due to your avatar...I just got the image of you taking off a giant Bolanesque top hat.

    It made me laugh.

  2. London Calling is great to my ears.

Aeroplane IS all that. Knowing it was inspired by the Diary of Anne Frank makes it even more interesting.

Sgt. Peppers is great 'cause of its vibe. I think it works fabulous as a whole.

How many really think Nirvana is better than Dino Jr.? Seriously...music's subjective, but that's just wrong. I don't dislike Cobain's voice, but J. Mascis voice works VERY well with Dino's sound. He can sing kinda gruff in some songs, very pretty in others.

I can think of about 10 Nirvana songs I like more than any Dino Jr song. Mascis is a better guitar player sure, but I haven't heard too many Dino songs I'd consider out and out classics. "Freak Scene" and maybe "Little Furry Things" hold upto Cobain's best, but that's about it by my ears.

And for the record, I actually find the David Bowie cover kind of boring, it's better than the original (probably the only Bowie song Nirvana could pull off better than an original) but I find The cover of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" is much more inspiring.

  3. I put I love them, but I just want to clarify; so much of what I find compelling is Mangum as a lyricist and vocalist. He's just an awesome presence. Truthfully, I don't think his melodic skills are that much greater than other E6 members. I think there are actually just as many great melodies from the OTC, but the songs don't connect emotionally the same way.

  4. I agree, I will take Nirvana over Dinosaur Jr. anyday, although I love D. Jr.

Random fact, Thurston Moore once tried to convince J Mascis to join Nirvana after Barlow left Dinosaur, and their future was in doubt. This was in the late 80s though, so Mascis was pretty incredulous about joining a band that at the time, only had a single out, and an LP forthcoming.

  5. I always found it ironic that despite being a vinyl afficianado, Wilco's albums fit so poorly on vinyl. A Standard vinyl with proper run out and run in grooves is about 47 minutes. Wilco's albums tend between 50-60 which falls in the range of "Not enough to justify a double vinyl, but 10 minutes too long for a single vinyl."

  6. Pearl Jam- Ten

It always baffled me how this got called Alternative when it basically pedalled the same sort of corporate rock schlock riffs that had dominated Radio since the mid-70s. Pearl Jam had about as much to do with Punk as Aerosmith did.

    The White Stripes- Elephant

It has maybe 4 okay songs. It has nothing worth being considered legendary.

    The Arcade Fire- Funeral.

It's not a bad album. It's just been done before. "Rebellion (Lies)', "Neighborhood #1" and "Wake Up" are great singles, but I sort of feel like other songs on the album fail to live upto that promise.

  7. :dontgetit It seems to me it's not a strong enough song to be in a Wilco album. In fact, it must be the least interesting song I have heard from them in a long time :(

The "I don't care anymore" part does get tiring after just a couple of minutes

I'd actually take it over the vast majority of Sky Blue Sky.

  8. "There are definitely more songs on this record that aren't directly from my experience. There's a song written from the point of view of a guy just killed his girlfriend," Tweedy says

Wasnt this song called 'Via Chicago'? If I were Sue I'd be concerned...

No...that was a song about DREAMING ABOUT killing someone. This is a song about having actually killed someone.

I guess Tweedy's characters are more proactive than they used to be.

  9. "My Country Has Disappeared"

    Wake up we're here

So much less than you feel

    There's nothing left here

    my country has disappeared

    The thinker tree's bleeding

    leaf red blood

    The Summer sweet dreaming

    In through the blush

A whole lot is ending (___)

    much too new

    Hold out your hand

There's so much you don't understand

so stick as close as you can

    to all our best-laid plans

you've got the white clouds hanging

    tonight above you

    you've got the helicopters dangling

    angling to shoot

The shots to feed the hungry

    weekend news crew angle

    I won't take no

    I won't let you go

    All Out by yourself

I know you need our help

When the cool light shakes you like a chandelier

When the snowflakes break through the atmosphere

Melt on the blue breath of the auctioneers who disappear

So every evening we can watch from above

    Crush the cities and (______)

blow ourselves into each others guts

And turn our faces upto the sun
