Such as, what do people think Rivera would have been like if he had remained a starter? I think he was a starter in the minors (but maybe not). Anyway, would he have been just as dominant? I wouldnt even try to make an argument like this, but I do think its interesting that in all the discussions about how great Mariano Rivera is, folks tend to forget that he has also blown some pretty enormous games -- like Game 7 of the WS against Arizona and game 5 (?) against the Indians on a homer a number of years ago to lose a series (did Manny hit that?). I think he also blew a game against the Sox a couple of years ago when the sox made their comeback from down 3-0. Wasn't he pitching when Dave Roberts stole second and then scored? No, I know what you are saying. But as I learn more about the game, and see the nuances, these are the things that I pick up on. I only thought it was interesting. I wasnt trying to read too much into the play -- just reading into the interesting concept of offsides and how it can be a (risky) strategy of the defense. And yes, I am sure they were exhausted. I was exhausted just watching them.

If you have a chance to see it I'd be interested to hear what you think... I really got the impression that it was not an intentional move by the defense. I got the sense that the defenseman forgot about the Trinidad player and he took a step up to half-heartedly play the ball. But then, I could be wrong. Rooney got everyone pumped up. I have never seen the guy play before, but it just seemed like everyone took it up a notch when he came in. I liked what I saw out of him. He played with more passion than anyone else on England. Led by example I think.

Yes, Crouch redeemed himself. A nice header to score the first goal. Another newbie observation/question re: the goal that Trinidad scored that was called back during stoppage time becasue it was offsides. It was the right call as the Trinidad player was clearly offsides. But in truth, the only reason he was offsides (as far as I could tell) was that the English defense got lazy and forgot about him. But its not like getting an extra out in baseball. Everyone gets 27 outs. Giving one team 28 outs would be an unfair advantage. Stoppage time gives both teams the chance to score, so no one has an advantage, and only puts time on the clock to compensate for the fact that the clock runs throughout the entire game -- including when injuries, and doctors w/stretchers, eat into the time for the teams to play. I like stoppage time... it adds an element of urgency and uncertainty that's kind of cool. And I like that the games are running time throughout. Its just a different vibe than basket

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. That guy just added to my confusion. Seriously, between the hard rocking, the Security guy onstage, the crowd, etc. it took me a good couple of songs to figure out what the hell was going on. I am a very new eels fan. The last album (blinking lights) is the only album I have heard other than the town hall/orchestra cd. I had no idea what to expect at this show since it was a free show and my first eels show, but let me say, it felt like I stepped into the twilight zone. First of all, the venue was packed. Interesting. I suppose that's what has been so cool to me in all of this. You could tell that Italy, Argentina, etc were the "better" teams in the sense that they werent rushing anything, they were supremely confident and would pick and choose their spots. They could almost lull you to sleep and then BAM! they score a goal. The African teams on the other hand: push, push, push. So intense. Sloppy, but intense.

This is admittedly coming from someone who confessed approx 5-6 posts ago that he had not (until this World Cup) been a big fan of soccer... But, I have been so impressed with the effort and intensity of the African nations playing in this tournament. Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo. Its really fun to watch them. Am I showing my naivete? I suppose these teams feel as if they have to prove that they belong?

I have never been much of a soccer fan, but I have become completely addicted to it. I watched all the games this weekend; bought into the hype about the US having a chance; took over a conference room in my office yesterday and watched the US get destroyed and I actually was very disappointed about it. I am hooked now. I absolutely love how each of the countries seem to have an identity in the way they play. You know the scene in IATTBYH where the fellas are sitting in a circle and Jay Bennet is playing Poor Places in open chords as they figure out the song? It looks to me like Jeff is playing it in power chords (sort of), or maybe just barre chords, but obviously in a different tuning. Does anyone have any idea what the tuning of Jeff's guitar is and what the changes are? The tab that I posted at the beginning of this thread does not mention dropped D tuning because the initial request was for the chords to the song. And when I posted it, I was thinking about Tweedy's solo version of the song. For the record, I do think the solo version of the song is in dropped D tuning and it makes the lick at the beginning of the song more effective/easier. That lick sure aint easy though... How is the Hot Rod Deluxe different from the Blues Jr or the Blues Deluxe? I am in the market for an amp these days too, and most people seem to think the Blues Jr is a great little tube amp with warm tone, etc. in this price range. Do folks agree with that?
