I have no arguments with this list at all. Kudos for remembering and including the very underrated Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. And I think Fear of a Black Planet is the best P.E.

What portion of your musical collection features rap?
MattZ replied to remphish1's topic in Someone Else's Song
I grew up in NYC at the time that Qwest exploded so my music universe for a good 2-3 years revolved around them, De La, Jungle Bros, Brand Nubian, etc. I appreciated the harder stuff of the time, like Public Enemy or NWA or Geto Boys, but that kind of rap was never fun for me like the east coast stuff was. For whatever reason -- maybe I never gave it enough of a chance -- rap since the early to mid-90s just never did anything for me. For me, it just never held a candle to Qwest's "Can I Kick It?" or De La's "Buddy" or Big Daddy Kane's "Pimpin Aint Easy". All in, I'd say my collection i -
I saw Colin recently on his solo tour and I was bummed to see that the song he wrote for his newborn son didnt make the cut for the album. But, then, I suppose it wasnt really ever going to work with the whole band. I havent heard it since I saw it back in Jan, but the tune is still in my head. I think the chorus went something like: "its weird and its wonderful too"... or something like that. Oh well. As for bands that I loved that I was embarrassed about 5 yrs later? Well, I certainly have my share. I wouldnt say I am embarrassed per se, but I wouldnt say its the first thing I'd br

I can agree with all of this. My only caveat would be that Marlins fans would drown out the Mets fans if more of them went to the games. Its not just that there are so many ny'ers in florida. But that certainly is a very very big reason. And for the record, I would never go to an opposing team's stadium and do that. -
Again - thats my point. Everyone here is talking about craft and using purely subjective concepts when coming to their definition/description. I may think Kenny G or Kinkade are boring or uninspiring. Others think they are insiprational. Can anyone say objectively whether they are artists or a craftsmen? No, of course not. Seems more consistent to me to acknowledge all of this, by just calling all of it art, and then breaking it down into two categories from there: whether you like it or not.
-
I take the blame for it. But in fairness, I think its a What Is Craft? discussion.
-
Except thats sort of my point -- it seems like you are doing the same thing as me (and thats why I used those examples)... This is all subjective. But isn't your defintion of craft really just art that you dont like (because it doesnt have feeling)? Why does something have to have feeling to be considered art? If something doesnt have feeling, I always considered it bad art, but not something other than art. Or, I should say, before I knew there was a difference that's what I would have said. In other words, art without feeling (e.g., vai, kenny g, etc.) is just art that I dont like --

No, I was pointing out why your team is losing money -- which I thought was your central point. Every team has to pay players to win. The Mets pay more than most. I wasnt arguing otherwise. I was suggesting that I wouldnt want to be a fan of a team that builds teams for one year and then breaks them down. The fact that you insist on defending the Marlins given how poorly they have treated their fans is laudable, but laughable. I know the Marlins have 2 championships since they have been around to zero for the Mets. But I just wouldn't want to be a fan of a team that breaks down wheneve -
I think Kenny G and Steve Vai suck. And I suppose based on your definition above, you'd say that they are crafstmen and not artists. But that seems fishy to me. It just seems like another subjective box you are putting art into. Pretty arbitrarily actually. I dont see "technique with no feeling" as any lesser of an art form on any level other than a subjective one. Plenty of people think Kenny G is an artist. Just because Kenny G plays on constant repeat in my own personal hell, doesnt make him a craftsman as opposed to artist. It makes him a shitty artist. Sorry, not trying to hi

I am no student of art in any sense. And I have no idea who Thomas Kinkade is. What's the difference between craft and art?
-
I think 1984 and Brave New World describe the world with much more accuracy than most people admit to themselves.
-
Can't a straight-up narrative in the form of a documentary be art? Not trying to argue on behalf of Beltmann, but ... If its a lifeless retelling, as you put it, I would think that makes it bad art, but art nonetheless.
-
I wasnt trying to make an argument about whether this was art or not... thats a slippery slope that has been discussed here ad nauseum. For the record, I do think this is art -- and my prior post incorrectly suggests that it isnt -- I only meant that its cheap art. The point I tried to make was that it is cheap and I have no interest in seeing a movie that recreates the bldgs collapsing in surround sound with surely to be nominated for an Oscar special effects. As if this is Star Wars revisited. And I acknowledge that my base instinct relates to the fact that my grandfather worked for 2

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- its this part of these national tragedies depicted as art that bothers me. I cant help but think that the re-creation of those buildings coming down in surround sound with amazing visuals is nothing more than an attempt to appeal to the voyeuristic rubber-necking sensibilities of folks that get off on watching tragedy from the safety of the bucket seats of a theater as they slurp down their cherry cokes or stuff another handful of popcorn into their gourds. I dont see what that has to do with art I dont see it as a statement and I certainly dont

Gotcha -- now I see what you mean. Thanks.

Very interesting. I have to admit that I judged that book by its cover (and its preview) and sort of assumed that it was a lame hollywood flick. Its one of several reasons why I wont be going to see the movie. That being said, the quote of yours that I clipped was particularly interesting to me. I guess when it comes down to it, if you are a cop trapped beneath rubble what's the difference? I dont mean for that to sound smug (and like I said, I havent seen the movie, so i am not sure what the central thesis of the movie is), but I would think that if you are trapped, it wouldnt matter

Damn bro. The in my initial post (I thought) implied/inferred that a joke was being made. But in fairness, maybe part of the reason he has lost money the last few years is because its hard to build a loyal fanbase when you build mercenary teams to win a world series and then ship them out? Or when you develop future stars like Josh Beckett and then get rid of them? I know I wouldnt want to be a fan of a team like that. Of course, since I am a Mets fan, I dont have to be -- whenever they go to play the Marlins you can hear the Lets Go Mets chants in the stands. Its pretty great actual -

Yes, but the fundamental point here is that when image/credibility is everything, it doesn't matter who is right or wrong. You think a 3 year lawsuit with a jury trial where he countersues for slander is in his best interests or helps his image? You think Fox wants that? Not to mention, juries dont always make the right decisions. O'Reilly could have been right, but 3 yrs of a trial would have kept this story in the news every day. To retain any credibility he had to make the story disappear -- and that is a fact whether he was guilty or not. So the fact that the story did disappear (by
