I think the lyrics may be slightly in flux at this point

Death Ships opened with their own set for about 45 minutes - these guys are a very good indie rock/americana/alt country band. I think most people on this board would dig them a lot. Some of their mellower stuff is on their myspace page, but they can bring the loud rock as well. Check 'em out.
But I think the question on everyone's mind was: "How was Jay going to sound". The answer IMO: very, very good.
Jay came out and played a few songs solo electric, admitting he was the "most nervous guy in Cook County". The crowd was very suportive though, and he drew more than a few chuckles when, as he was putting a capo on before a song, he said that if anyone jumped on stage and tried to kiss him, he would punch him. The solo stuff was good, but the highlight was his 10 or so songs with Death Ships (minus lead singer Dan Maloney). Three things became obvious to me as the set went on. 1) Jay really can pull off the front man role. He many not have a honey-smooth singing voice, but neither does Micah from Two Cow Garage, and that doesn't in any way detract from my enjoyment of that band. I think as he gets more used to this role he'll only get better. 2) The more straightforward rock arrangements seem to work really well - I prefered the simple live arrangements of certain songs like 5th Grade over the more produced versions on the album. Funny note - if you take the live version of Out All Night played tonight, add a serious Instrumental 2/Courderouy Cutoff Girl-style production to it, you get the album version. 3) Jay's guitar playing still kicks ass. At one point, Jay mentioned he had to stretch a 10 song set into an hour, so I yelled that he should take a 10 minute guitar solo. Well, it wasn't 10 minutes, but after tearing through a searing solo on the second to last song, he turns to the band and signals them to keep going. Then he continues to tear it up for another several runs through the progression. Without getting into the whole Nels vs. Jay thing, I know there's some criticism here that Jay is a one-trick pony when it comes to guitar solos. My answer to that is when you're that good, you don't need another trick. Hearing Jay play tonight scratched a musical itch I've had for 5 1/2 years.
Small crowd on a rainy Tuesday, but VC'ers madscientist, SFolk, and Groo and friends all had a good time. Jay was nice enough to autograpgh SFolk's CD and talk to me for a minute. Seemed like a genuinely nice guy. I really hope this is the start of somethinig good for him.

I supposed I could always buy them tomorrow, and if they end up being too much selling them off at face + fees. Or I can just be happy I'm seeing Jeff play here in 2 weeks. Decisions, decisions...
I think the cheap seats are more like $25, though I'm not sure I can recommend the cheap seats at the Aud Theater

here's Northfield, 6 may 2000...
nice falsetto vocals on this version during some parts:
Those 2000 versions are nice - a bit peppier than the album version

It was a headlock on an ass, tats' all.......

OMG - I heard Jeff put the guy in a headlock and gave him a tat on the ass!!!11

It's possible that jayfarrar's web people were not paying attention and let it lapse.
Creation Date: 11-Mar-2001
Expiration Date: 11-Mar-2008
seems unlikely given these dates

I've got one that just clamps onto the headstock and picks up the vibes. It's awesome, especially when you're jamming, you can just turn yourself down and tune, but I guess you can do that with the other ones. Anyways, the headstock ones are cool and space-agey.
Good call - I was thinking electric guitar - it's easy to plug into any of the ones I mentioned above. But but those headstock ones are especially perfect for an acoustic with no pickup, especially if tuning in a noisy room.

Save your money and buy the Epiphone Valve Junior. At $99 it sounds freakin' killer and you'll have enough left over to buy a few nifty boutique stomp boxes to put in front of it. This amp is unreal for the money. You can also mod it fairly easy.
That or get the Traynor YCV40. It is powerful but it sounds really good at low volumes. The overdrive is more like a clean boost, perfect for cutting through and it gets a great classic tube tone.
I've seen one guy's rig which is two Valve Jr heads and matching Epi Tiggerman Cabinets in stereo. 5 watts isn't much in a 1x8 combo, but two of them pushing two 4x12 cabs moves a lot of air! Oh yeah, total cost for the amps and cabs was
That said, I'm happy with the Traynor and and it's a lot less crap to move around

I just went to check out the site and it would appear it's either been hacked or switched hands in the past 12 hours since I last checked. Apparently I can get some sweet drugs from that site now...
Jay Farrar = BigBreast43000

I guess my past experiences of gigs in Britain have shaped that view - I've seen people get up on stage a lot in the past and put their arm around the guitarist or whatever,
we won the revolution - we don't have to put up with that crap anymore

QUOTE(Paul B @ Oct 17 2006, 12:30 PM)I wish Jeff gave that guy a good, solid donkeypunch.
And all those working security............they deserve to never be employed as "security" again.
do you know what a donkeypunch is?

Cue up the scene in that terrible Stones film Let's Spend The Night Together where old Keith wacks a dude with his Telecaster.

I have never gotten a response from the error reports. I just figured it was one of those things that got left by the wayside.

so, i'm a relatively new guitar player, and i have a lot of trouble tuning my guitar to anything other than the standard E A D G B E. The tuner I have is a Qwik Tune cheap piece of shit that has the little dial that tells you when the string is centered on one of those notes. What I really want is an electronic tuner that can pick up a note and tell you exactly what it is. That way it would be much easier for me to tune to other keys. Does such a thing exist?
Plenty of ones that will do that, you just want a chromatic tuner - two popular versions for stage use are the Boss TU-2 and the Korg DT-10. People with a ton of money or who really require super accurate tuning like the Peterson Strobostomp.
If you don't need a stage tuner for live work, something like the Korg CA30 should work fine and is a lot cheaper.

She didn't love the Fort Worth show,
clearly a lost cause - I would stop being friends with her
-
I don't get it.
clearly this is solace doing some shameless promotion, or else IRDBoon is back.
duh - I didn't even notice that solace responded in this thread
-
(though, I've the larger version).
size queen
Except for the Prunes and Custard, which I bought specfically to play Wilco stuff, I too only share the tuner and volume pedal. Mostly because I can't afford the gear Tweedy can.
-
That's not the conclusion I was drawing. I just notice a lot of people seem to hate this side of Wilco and would prefer Wilco do another YHF which isn't going to happen. It bothers me about a lot of bands' fans who want them to always sound like their favorite album.
People can dig what they want--I'm expressing my feelings to those who don't want Wilco to change.
I'm happy for Wilco to change - I love AM and I love AGIB. I love Walken and I love On and On and On. I love a good rock song, and would be thrilled if they brought back a simple 3 chord rocker like Dreamer.
That said, I think this song is pretty awful.

I'm seeing him this friday, and am wondering what to expect. Does he play with a band these days?
He's playing with a band on this tour if I remember correctly. The song I heard on the radio sounded very Wallflowers-esque to me. Jay's singing voice isn't the best, but if he's playing lead guitar, I'm sure there will be some great moments.
Please post a review after the show....

I once had a "prototype" Budweiser stout they were serving at the brewery. It was not good. I don't have a lot of confidence Miller will do better.

Jeff doesn't look right playing a big ol' Les Paul. Bring back the Strat you played on Conan Jeff!
he needs the LP to match his new Marshall

Spiders (kidsmoke) has drummed up business for them.
that's how they got me

So I was working on some design stuff and I was stuck and I get alot inspiration from the picturebox people cause everything they do is both conceptual and esthetically pleasing (thats a whole nother thread). And I noticed on one of the writing credits (I think Hell is Chrome, but I dont have it in front of me) there is an AGIB song cowritten by Girard. Who is this man or woman and how did they end up contributing to an AGIB song?
Chris Girard is his name - don't know much else about him

I was way behind schedule this morning, or this never would have happened (because I never would have gone to this horrible place).

If you are OK with mp3s, the mother hips board thegrotto.com has quite a few. You have to register with the site, but that's easy. Just be aware many people will not trade for shows encoded to mp3. If you have fast internet and are not behind a firewall or on a .edu site, the torrent sites posted above are your best bet.
