  1. Compare and contrast US economic growth, budget and foreign policy foot print. Era one 1992-2000, era two 2000-2008. To claim that either party is immune to corrosive influence is naive, to claim that there is no difference is lazy.
  2. Upon third listen, I'm totally in love with this album. It's a long journey (one hour +), but all so enjoyable that it's totally worth it. Definitely a slightly different sound for him, I hear some African highlife influence. At points it is more straight forward than other Bird outings.
  3. You should respond to some of the serious questions if you thing an agreement can be found. A lot of the things in that 'revolution' propaganda piece I actually agree with. Sparky, you are posting the most on here, but not responding directly to anyone. It makes it look like you don't have an argument. If you are confident about the candidate, the perspective, and the issues you keep pushing on here, then you should entertain some of the questions: What's wrong with raising taxes on a powerful corporation (of the same type targeted in your video)? Why shouldn't the governement regulate
  4. I'm 1.5 listens in to the new Andrew Bird as it is streaming at NPR's website. So far I know that it is good, I am trying to decide if it is great. Anybody else tune in to this yet?
  5. Yes. Republicans blame poverty on poor people. Libertarians blame poverty on the government. Communists blame poverty on the rich. Pragmatic progressives blame poverty on a vast number of systemic issues that begin with individual psychology and extend to socio-economic class. Most of these insights make very shitty headlines, they are usually found in foreign relations, public health and economics journals. They don't fit on a bumper sticker.
  6. Spacemen 3 are great. I also like The Jam, The Clash Mega City Four PJ Harvey and the ones that everybody knows but you can't ignore Nick Drake Radiohead Beatles Stones Kinks
  7. But collectivism, and a socialist/capitalist hybrid are what has made Germany a great country for the past several decades. They squashed communism, but retained the social services that have stabilized their country. I would say the Belgians are overtaxed, but they still are more stable than Italy and Greece. That hybrid has brought our nation a highway system, the post office, the national parks and countless other things. The same spirit on a local level is responsible for triumphs like the NYC subways system. A world without taxes and public programs sounds good if you're out in a fi
  8. I am all for wealthy people getting their dividends taxed at a higher rate. I know some wealthy people who are too. Have you ever considered that some "job creators" don't create many jobs. We live in a country dying for green energy and high speed rail let's create some jobs there. We live in a country where a high school science teacher is trying to teach photosynthesis to 38 second language learners, that looks like a job waiting to happen. Taxes should not be abused, or misused, but any time our country is ready to invest in its betterment (and not in a war) I'm in line with my cut.
  9. Deficit haters all sourly utter the name of............. Reagan?
  10. Whoever wrote that needs to get out of their armchair and come see what's going on: http://youtu.be/RadzweRQaNU
  11. You're getting spammy, Sparky. At the end of the day he can't get elected, and I'm mostly happy about it. No matter what a dude tells me on what they think about a woman's right to choose- it's not going to change my mind. I can easily break ranks with Paul there, and posting videos about his perspective on the issue isn't going to change mine.
  12. Compare your state taxes to the price of one year's tuition at a private secondary school and you will see 'pay for' takes on a pretty different color when contrasting the private to the public sphere.
  13. This. Here's my summary at this point. Ron Paul is a radical who won't get elected. Mitt Romney is a cyborg that no one loves. Santorum is a hateful bigot who deserves nothing. Barack Obama is a blend of pragmatics and ideals that has been heavily compromised by his position. I think we could see another 4 years of Obama. Frankly, I'll take it. I might have to deal with a politician who seems to be pretty effected by big business, but at least Obama has some restraint when it comes to the military. My deepest fear is that anyone with a chance at involvement with the executive branch
  14. My old band played a basement show w/ the Brokedowns in IL. Dudes are awesome, and they make good music too. Good current punk/hardcore: Off! Forgetters Samiam (still going) Leatherface (also still going) White Lung Mashysteri Punk and hardcore are no more an anachronism than alt-country or electro pop. It's about whether or not you're good enough at an old genre to make it seem like something new and relevant. Wilco's music is often proof of this.
  15. If you're going to sing while you strum experiment with mic placement to get as much seperation as possible, and to try and get the phase just right. So many weird things happen to the phase of the two mics when they're so close together. One classic trick is if you have a mic in figure 8 pattern, angle it so the pickup pattern is getting what you want, and the null is pointed towards the other element (either voice, or guit). A whole other vibe is to try singing the words in your head, getting a solid guitar track and then OCD'ing the vocals to get them your best. Depends on what kind of
  16. It wont take long before he wont be ont the Wilco radar so visibly, but in the mean time you're missing out.
  17. First Wilco show in CO I've missed in years. Damn tickets sold out too fast. I hope you guys had fun, and I hope they come back in 2012.
  18. Not the best sound mix, they took a lot of the teeth out of that song. I hope the rest of the broadcast let's you hear everything a little fuller.
  19. The Roots are great. Like several of my favorie hip-hop artisits (Jay-Z, Talib) their recent albums are all a mix of instant classics, solid deep cuts, and forgettable throwaways. Everything they've done has something excellent on it. I still need to hear the new one, but all the press made it sound really interesting.
  20. They should have got someone who listened to the record to write the story.
  21. Oh man, you're right. I wonder what the licensing is for stuff that was not released. It's probably fair game, but the B-sides would be licensing difficult.
