yay babies!
Congrats, Jules - I hope everyone is doing well.

I'm in! I picked up a copy on my way home from work tonight (even though I already had one at my parents' house - grr).
-
amazing! i pretty much could have died happy after poor places > spiders, and that was before both of the encores! i thought the crowd was fine, and really enjoyed the venue and having space to dance and whatnot. Also, there is a lot to be said for seeing a show basically in your backyard, and being able to stumble four blocks home afterwards.
It was also nice to see Jess and Paul there (and Susan and Tim ). I got to meet Glenn, Mikael, and Nels at the after party, and they are just really super nice guys.

I will be there - can't wait!
-
thanks, all! i had a great day!

that relay was amazing! you people who aren't watching are seriously missing out.

My nieces like to just say "Shia LaBeouf!" for no reason.
kinda like "simon le bon!"?

I have a hard time imagining anyone above the age of 15 (other than his friends and family, etc) giving nifty shits about him. I am amazed that there is a thread. Sorry for being cantakerous.
I've had a soft spot for him ever since the show "Even Stevens," in which he was adorable and reminded me of my little brother. Hope he stops being such an idiot soon.

miss you, kev. i miss madison too, sometimes, but i miss you more. nice to see you around here.

So glad to know that you seem to be in the clear. I'm looking forward to coming home in a couple of weeks and helping out where I can.

Has anyone heard from Foxwell?
I don't know for sure, but from his previous descriptions of where he lives, he seems to be right in the thick of it. My parents' house is fine, and my dad's downtown office is miraculously dry (expensive oncology equipment + flood water = not good) for now.

by the way, this is what the town is supposed to look like:
and this is what it now looks like:
and I can't get the song 'When the Levee Breaks' out of my head.

if anyone could spare some vibes for my hometown, Cedar Rapids (and El Foxwell), I'm sure they could use it:

Yes,
Lesson 1: Don't be an agressive, independent thinking woman. It's a boys club afterall.
Lesson 2: Don't run against a black man. You can drag a woman through the mud for being old, ugly, wearing pant suits, accuse her of being a lesbian, tell her to go back to the kitchen, belittle her for her private marital issues. But make sure you take no notice of the black voters that historically supported you (or her husband, rather) because you're obviously racist AND a woman).
Lesson 3: Don't speak confidently, say what you're going to do and give specifics. Instead, keep it vague, get others to hold the knives, and don't engage in meaningful debate.
Class dismissed.
her campaign didn't collapse because she's a woman - if anything it was the only thing keeping her in it for so long. she failed because of poor organization, bad management (picking loyal staffers rather than qualified ones), fundraising, and a few factors beyond her control (change being such an important issue, obama doing all the right things). i'm as big a feminist as they come, but come on.

I definitely started to tear up during the scene when they step off the military plane and see their families. I am such a dork.
Nitpick - wouldn't Sun's doctor know, from the D.O.C., that her baby was conceived on the island? And if Jin didn't survive the plane crash, wouldn't people be wondering what the hell that was about?
-
I'm pretty sure she's only staying in it so that she can earn back the money she lent. A fitting end to an increasingly disingenuous run.
I will be volunteering for Obama in the fall, and I'm very much looking forward to it!

it's a (mostly true) biography about a southern Sudanese boy's journey from his village (after it was attacked) to several refugee camps, and finally, America. The things that happened to this kid, and the amount of strength and growth and resilience he's shown - just amazing. and it's beautifully written; every sentence seems to have a larger purpose, and is perfectly crafted.

I haven't read through this entire thread, so I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but I just finished this last night:
and it has affected me more than any other book I've read in a long, long time. I didn't let myself get too emotional about it until I finished, but once I did - my head is still spinning. everyone should read this book.

I just watched episode 9 last night - I missed it on Thursday night because I went to see Spring Awakening on Broadway. The actor playing one of the lead roles looked really familiar, and I didn't realize it at the time, but it was Karl!
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I like it when the plot moves along.

when I was in South America, I visited a little beach/surf town in Ecuador called Montanita. It was heaven - great vibe, friendly, laid-back people, good restaurants, and definitely off the beaten path. Let me know if you want more information.

Free shows are only on Sunday I think?
I can't remember exactly, but for some reason I'm thinking there were a few free shows during the week last summer.
-
oh, nice! McCarren Park is 10 minute walk from my apartment!
it's possible that this could be a free show - last summer, they had a summer concert series with a bunch of gratis music.
o-man, it's an old, GIANT pool that was drained and left for dead by the city, until it was resurrected as a concert venue, etc. a few years ago. you might also remember it from an episode of America's Next Top Model a few weeks ago, when they did a photo shoot there. check it out here.

we watched "Fiddler on the Roof" last night on PBS. I haven't seen that movie in years, and I forgot how much I it.
