  1. i think wilco would be much different if jay had remained in the band and nels never joined. for one, every song wouldn't end in a guitar solo like the songs tend to do now. i think they would have been more experimental like with the summerteeth and yankee hotel foxtrot albums and sky blue sky would have ended up sounding totally different. i still think jeff would have wanted to write the sky blue sky songs whether jay was there or not, but the final sound of the album would have been different because jay seemed like someone who liked to stand up to jeff and give his honest opinion and would try to influence him to do things he otherwise wasn't considering. nels doesn't seem like that kind of guy, he basically does anything jeff tells him to and doesn't question.

it's kind of like when you are watching episode I, II, and III of star wars and you are wondering "did anyone ever tell george lucas no? did anyone have the balls to give him creative input and tell him when something he is doing sucks or isn't quite right?" i mean how did that dialogue in I and especially II ever get past the first read through? george lucas, with the success of the first movies, basically became this powerful guy who did anything he wanted and no one challenged him. thus he put out 2 piece of shit movies (I and II) and 1 mediocre film (III) because no one in the process of making the film convinced him that was he was making was shit and something needed to change before he finalized the product.

i think jeff is kind of like george lucas. he had jay there to spur him creatively (whether he liked it or not) and he made some strokes of genius with being there, summerteeth, yankee hotel foxtrot, and even a ghost is born which contained songs written when jay was still in the band. now the band is officially "jeff's band" and i don't think the members are questioning his decisions enough. they are just doing whatever he wants to do and following his lead assuming he knows best. i think it's better when you have everyone giving aggressive input. look at the beatles... they were so great because of the competition between lennon mccartney and eventually harrison to write the best songs. they helped each other out and were constantly in a state of argument/conflict etc. near the end of the bands life. but they produced some of the greatest music ever.

and for the record i don't think sky blue sky is a bad album, it's just so much different from what wilco was doing and it doesn't seem to stand the test of time... i listen to it less the older it gets yet i still go back to all the other albums frequently.

  2. I'm pretty sure they're saying not to buy it.

well duh, but what is their reason? is it because they are mad at the company, or because they really think the quality won't be improved with blu-ray? i think it is the former and not the latter - i can see it being much better on blu-ray, in particular the sound which is the most important part of the movie. if you have a blu-ray player and a 5.1 surround sound system then it might be worth checking the blu-ray out.

  3. i think it depends on how the sound turns out on the blu-ray whether it's worth it or not. the sound on the normal dvd is beyond awesome, and i can't see it being that much better on blu-ray unless they put 5.1 dolby digital surround sound on there. Then it truly would be better and would be worth picking up the blu-ray. i'm not sure if Wilco is trying to say that the audio will be the same on the blu-ray or not, but i don't see how that will be the case. i think they might just be a little butthurt that the company is releasing the film without telling them (which is a stupid - they should have told them). however, the video will definitely be clearer, and some people like that sort of thing, especially on a large HDTV. wilco might prefer the rougher standard version as they might see it as more "artsy." it's all a matter of personal preference. if the audio is 5.1 dolby digital (which i thought is standard on blu-ray), then if you have a 5.1 system it would be worthwhile to pick it up and hear the improvement. i love the audio of the DVD and i've been meaning to try to get lossless rips from it but i haven't had spare time to attempt yet.

the price is probably pretty substantial (in the range of $30) due to the licensing fees and the fact that they probably don't expect to sell that many copies to cover the fees, so they have to raise the price. Movie blu-rays tend to be released cheaper because they sell so many more copies.

  4. There's a big difference between believing in god, and believing in organized religion. From what I've heard, the movie explores the latter.

no, it's an attack on both organized religion and god in general. in the movie, maher comes off as an atheist that thinks god is just an imaginary friend in the sky.

  5. i walked out on Bob Dylan last year at ACL. for one thing, i wasn't close to the stage, and for whatever reason he refused to let cameras do a close up of his face. so they had big screens there to show the performers, but they only put a distant view of the entire stage up on the screen. As for dylan, he sounded horrible. his voice is so raspy these days, it sounded like he has throat cancer or something. he was just grunting instead of singing. it was too difficult to watch so i left. i felt embarrassed for him because a lot of younger people who don't know dylan were in the audience making fun of him. he's definitely a legend (i have almost all his cds), but he definitely didn't look or sound like one at ACL. he looked an old fool that is way past his prime yet still continues to strut out there to collect his money.

  6. what i wish would happen would be for jay bennett to re-join the band, help jeff write all the songs, do all the deconstructing/looping/noise work in the studio, then leave the band and let the current cast play the songs live.

  7. the audio recording for this movie is ridiculously good - if you jack it up and blast it at full volume you feel as if wilco is in the room with you playing the songs. you can hear every little nick, the bass sounds amazing as if john is playing it right in front of you, the drums on pot kettle black are so completely awesome that i don't know how they didn't manage to capture that sound on the actual album (it's much more muffled on the album, though still good).

saying that leads to my next question - is there anyway to get the recording of these songs in mp3 format or (better) lossless?

  8. Jeff is lookin old these days...

    haha true

in other news this new song is completely badass - it's wilco using everyone's strength to make a really quality song that doesn't sound forced.

  9. wilco > radiohead because tweedy is cooler than thom yorke. yorke is kinda a douche in reality. he cries like a little baby if something he releases doesn't get unanimous praise from the critics (i.e. The Eraser). i think both have been in a downhill spiral since their release of their masterpieces (YHF for wilco, OK Computer/Kid A for Radiohead)

  10. Just saw this on the CBC, and not quite surprised you guys knew all about this. And while this initially got me very excited, all I can think now is holy shit are those tickets ever expensive!

    For Toronto:

    Ticket Price:

$250.00 CAD for Price Level 1

$99.00 CAD for Price Level 2

$76.75 CAD for Price Level 3- GA Floor

Ticket price includes a $1.75 CAD facility fee

Guess $76 for standing on the floor behind 10000 people isn't too bad, except I'm kinda short. Those $250 tickets better be really good.

dear lord. anyone have links to any other ticket prices?

  11. The recording of this show was easily the worst of the three that I have been to. And it was at my house. And I am probably the bad singer. There, I said it.

*Stamps "ASS" above your head* /a la Conan O'Brian and Max

overall i enjoyed the recording, not the greatest sure, but it's fun to listen to. the only really terrible singing is in airline to heaven. jeff screws up about 5 songs, but it's always funny when he does.

what i wonder is if he really "forgot how to play" summerteeth like he says in the recording, or he just didn't want to play it. if i ever got to go to one of these performances - kamera, pot kettle black, summerteeth, and candyfloss would be at the top of my list.
