  1. i think tweedy definitely believes in some sort of god - he has many songs full of religious imagery. i don't see anything in theologians that would suggest he is atheist, but honestly i couldn't put into words what that song (or any of his songs) mean. i don't think i can form sentences well enough to do it justice.

  2. i was trying to find good love songs (i know, sounds gay) that aren't the standard pop/country stuff - kinda in the vain of something tweedy would write but not a song by jeff (cause i know all his songs).

for example - love hurts by gram parsons is really good, and of course the beatles - something which could be the best love song ever written. also chi-lites - oh girl. anyone care to name some others that i might not know about?

  3. nice... something to listen to at work

edit 1: lol some terrible singers in the crowd for airline to heaven

"turn your eye to the lord of the sky" - someone is trying to harmonize an octave above jeff and is failing miserably

edit 2: haha jeff is screwing up pretty much every song. pretty funny stuff.

  4. i finally got around to buying this album a couple weeks ago, and i'm quite surprised it got such outstanding reviews. this music is dreadful and uninspiring... i can't understand what beth gibbons is even saying in most of the songs, and is it just me or can she not sing? she was so much better in their first two albums. Listening to Deep Water makes me cringe. it's like her voice keeps cracking and going out of pitch, and i can't tell if she's doing that on purpose or not, but it sounds like a really bad karaoke singer.

her lyrics are pretty bland this go around as well. where are the classic observations on life and the world? where are songs like it's a fire or roads? i think sometimes critics who are fans of a band's previous work want their new albums to be good so much that they just give them a pass (i.e. Radiohead: Hail to the Thief was a mediocre album but it got outstanding reviews from everyone). this album is a 5/10 or lower, not 8 and above like most publications gave it. it's no where near the quality of Dummy and not really on par with the self-titled album either. i think the band lost their touch; not surprising considering they waited a decade before making a new album.

decent songs (but not near the quality of any of their previous work) - the rip, we carry on, magic doors

mediocre to terrible songs - every other song on the album.

  5. hey does anyone here have a recommendation for a book or website that explains chord progression really well? it really pisses me off when i'm looking for a particular tone while playing something and i can't figure out what chord i need because i have trouble understanding chord progression.

  6. I would bet that you are in the minority with your answer. As far as wanting them to break in the mainstream, it won't happen. There music isn't mainstream. That you have friends that you expose to Wilco but still don't like them says volumes about your friends. Wanting to be on SNL is fine. No gripes. Canceling, again excuse me, postponing, a sold out show with 5 days notice is wrong from my end of the telescope.

i think my friends can be grouped in the majority of music listeners in america. the majority listens to only what is popular on the radio. while you'll never hear wilco at a dance club, i remain optimistic that they can break through the mainstream. they'll have to write a different album than sky blue sky thats for sure, but there was a time when challenging, artistic, and experimental music ruled the chart. it was in the days of the beatles and the stones and dylan, and it could happen again. not that wilco is the chosen one or anything, but they deserve a break every now and then. i personally wish all this media exposure would have happened with a ghost is born instead of sky blue sky... a ghost is born had much more commercial viability than it's followup. i think there is a lot of risk that people will take one listen to side with the seeds or impossible germany and write it off as dad rock. but that topic has been discussed ad nauseum.

  7. speaking of which, they are nice enough to reschedule the show. when are the white stripes going to reschedule all the dates they canceled last year? "oh meg had a nervous breakdown, sorry we aren't playing! fooled you!!!!" and no word of any rescheduling. that almost ruined ACL for me... only wilco made it all better by playing an awesome set.

  8. No. I will be 45 on the 22nd of June. I am quite mature. What would you reaction be if they did the opposite, as I queried?

My reaction, if they did the opposite, would be that the band is retarded. how can you pass up an opportunity to play on SNL just to play a generic show that you can just as easily reschedule? how can you pass up an opportunity to expose yourself to potentially millions of new listeners?

i would love wilco to break into the mainstream. i'm sick of my friends listening to only foo fighters and thinking everything else sucks. they don't give wilco a chance because wilco doesn't get enough exposure. why are some fans so selfish that they want wilco to be their own little secret and never reap any large scale success? i mean, u2 is doing pretty good, radiohead is doing pretty good, etc. those bands are making way more than wilco, but are they really that much better? the answer, in my opinion, is no.

tweedy should be a household name. if we lived in a perfect world, tweedy and wilco would be as recognizable as any music artist out there. he is a better singer/songwriter combo than 98% of artists alive today, and better than 90% of artists in history. but what makes a wilco show great is not only the music, but the entertainment factor that tweedy provides. if snl was smart, they might try to incorporate that into the broadcast. have tweedy and co. do some skits or something. i doubt this will happen, but snl is a still a great gig despite the recent downturn in comedic ability.

  9. Some of you people are serious koolaid drinkers. I have been into Tweedy since No Depression came out. I would venture to say that his music means as much to me as to anyone on this board. This was a bad move. "Be happy for the exposure they'll get", "What else could they do?". Laughable. Anyone giving any grief to anyone upset about missing this show is misguided. A true illness or a family emergency, of course cancel the show, oh excuse me certain vc Jonestown residents, reshedule the date. But a week's notice to be on SNL? No way. Try to be objective for a moment. Let's say that the band made the OPPOSITE decision. They said no to SNL because they have a sold out show in a week. I doubt that a one of you would have said, "What a stupid move. Fuck the date! They could have been on SNL!!" You ALL would have said, "Hell yes. THAT is why I love this band".

And yes, I have tickets but I would feel the same regardless.

i'm guessing you were -4 when you got into no depression, so that would make you about 14 right now. yep, that is about your maturity level.
