  1. Hey nice job A-Man with all the links and such.

On another note just received my copy of the 2-14-68 (Road Trips). Friggin sweeeeeeet! This is yet another example of Primal Dead, you can just hear the acid dripping through this one. Also got the Hartford 77 set, thats also pretty great. I would highly reccomend both

  2. I've listened to Greensboro and thought it was pretty danr good.

As to the Dead doing tv/White House/ticket prices, etc : not for nothing but Garcia died almost 14 years ago when tickets to shows were going for over $40 often. I'd imagine they'd be close to what other major acts charge now.

I hear you're point but, unfortunately, time forges ahead and things change. These guys are old and most of them have been vocal about their political ideals the last 10 years or so. Doesn't bother me that much as I hardly expected things to remain the same after Garcia kicked, though. This band has no where near my attention nor impact on me so I take it with a grain of salt, I guess.

From what I've gathered, the dead didn't set ticket prices (and may have even tried to lower them iirc).

Sure......I hear you it just seems too mainstream I guess. I'm not saying they loose street cred 'cause they aren't saying fuck you to the man or anything like that but, I dunno.....for me it just doesn't jibe. Yeah times change for sure, it's just tough seein Bob and Phil koffe klatching with Whoopi and Joy Behar....I never tripped that bad to see something like that :stunned

  3. Hmmmm.....Bobby and Phil on The View a few weeks ago....Tipper sitting in on Drums....Tour "Books" after each show......$100 + ticket prices......What's going on? Used to be Kind Veggie Burritos and "doses!..Doses! What is this the 401K tour?

I know I know they gotta make a living but this just seems so un-dead like Call me jaded and cynical and who am I to judge but count me out. Jerry is rolling in his grave (or at least his ashes are swirling in the Ganges). The Dead have gone middle of the road. Christ... I gotta bust out some Pigpen now.

Sorry for the rant, if you go and have a blast, far out. This all just does nothing but make me feel a bit bummed.

  4. 2/27/69 - Fillmore West....

It's hard to believe...40 YEARS ago today - the recording of the song that launched a million journeys.

I'd be interested in any of you sharing your first experience with the Live Dead version of Dark Star - I did have a real schweeet blahg all typed out about this last night, then a vicious thunderstorm knocked me offline and now I can't retrieve it (computer illiterate :stunned ). Maybe I'll try again later.

That was the one that did it for me.

I had a friend back in Jr. High (no pun intended) whose older brother turned us on to the Dead with that tune. This would have been back in 1976. We had the day off from school 'cause of a blizzard and we were hangin' out in my friends cellar planning on building a snow fort and his brother walks in and says we gotta listen to this. He put on Live Dead and proceeded to get us stoned (it was like my third time ever). When Darkstar came on I was completely mezmerized. That slow, snaky intro....and on and on and on it went. The snow fort never got built that day, and even now over 30 years later I have never been so high in my life. Truly a benchmark moment. One listen and I was hooked for life. Even though there is tons of great other music I really love, that one song in all it's incantations just has it all. It's auditory infinity. Nothing else even comes close.

I don't listen to that particular (Live/Dead) version nearly as often as I used to but every time I play it, it all comes back. Being able to hear it in the full context (on the Fillmore box set) made it that much better.

  5. :moo

When I saw the Moo-Cow I immediately thought of the chick in The Grateful Dead Movie they show doing her "Whooo-Whooo" noises.

Watching the various people they filmed during that run never fails to crack me up. Wish I couldda been there in those days......

  6. I wasn't actually there but from reports here, one of my favorite Wilco stories comes from that show. As they are leaving the stage, Jeff says "The Rolling Stones are coming up next. Stick around".

I saw them play Bluesfest here. Not an arena but there were probably 30,000+ and they blew the roof off that - pretty remarkable considering it was outdoors.

True story. I thought they played great and sounded great that day. The only shitty thing was that quite a few folks weren't in their seats and those that were were trying to talk over them. I heard many, many folks saying stuff like "who the hell are these guys", etc, etc. In all they played around 10 tunes and as I stated before they sounded great. Pretty good PA system there at Phillips arena. Sadly most of the folks were there only to see the Stones and seemed to not give a damn. Personally I thought I'd died and gone to heaven, Wilco and The Stones on the same bill, pretty friggin' great!

  7. As Mr. dmait pointed out - looks like Parish is at it also. I bet Jerry's last wife will have something to say about all of this. I think people should listen to the music, watch what film footage there is and enjoy the trip. We don't need some Hollywood BS movie to know that Jerry had problems. And that is exactly what the movie will end up highlighting.

Right on A-Man, you hit the nail on the head, but I daresay Jerry's last wife probably won't have too much to say if there is a good payday to be had.

  8. Just a friendly reminder, folks - the 35th anniversary of the spectacular Winterland Run. Go bust out that boxset and be prepared to lose your mind! :dancing

There are many who consider the Dark Star from that run to be the best ever. I don't know about that, but it's certainly worth debating.

One damn fine run of shows......The Star is indeed sweet, but man oh man do I love those 1969 versions....Primal Dead!

  9. one of my all time favorite Weirisms was from 10-30-71, that ones famous for the dude screaming "Truckin'" at every opportunity

Bobby: Hey you folks under the lip of the balc, bal, bbbal-

    Jerry: " B B B b Balcony!"

Bobby: Might want to watch out cause in a minute they're gonna dump a whole load of live chickens on ya

    That always cracks me up

  10. Great Wharf Rat from 4-26-71 (Fillmore East NY, NY) immortilized for all time on the SkullFuck album

Good shout out MB for 9-27-72, an all time great. They sold this DP on the home shopping network when it first came out and was absolutely hillarious to see the live feed from Dead HQ with visibly tripping Latvala and Parrish going on and on about this. It's the one item I have ever ordered from a shopping channel. The operator that took my order was like "why are all these weird people calling here tonight"

    True Story

  11. You may be right. I was just referring to the tape of the show. The tune in it's whole. The ending was the part I was referencing anyway.

    ;)

Yeah.... I listened to the show only once, it's seriously a bummer. On another note there is a great version of So May Roads from Salt Lake City from February of that year, that version (to my ears) is the best.....It was (and is) a great song. Wouldda been interesting to see what they would have come up with had Jerry knocked off the dope and chili dogs.

  12. I think it's a fantastic version, though. One of the few redeeming qualities to the overall tepid show. Garcia adds some sweet "Lord, I've been walking down the road..." stuff at the end, too.

sidenote: They played Hendrix' version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" after the show for the fireworks display.

If you read the liner notes in the set that particular version of So Many Roads is actually a compilation of two different versions of the song. The first half was from a previous show (a few days earlier) and the second half was actually from that (final show) night.

    Or something to that effect.

  13. 6/14/76 - Beacon Theatre NYC

This show should be mentioned if only for the amazing 30+ minute Help > Slip > Frank sequence. The Slipknot in particular is 13:20 minutes long and contains the most unbelievable playing! The jam includes some stuff with just JG and the drummers that reminds me of some of the Trane/Elvin Jones duets. Then Phil joins in and there is a great musical argument between Jerry and Phil. Bobby gets his .02 and things veer off course for a minute but then the theme is re-established and dovetails nicely into a 11 minute Franks that is just exactly perfect. My favorite Slip ever.

Sorry that I can't post this stuff up -I'm listening to Maxells from a looong time ago.

:thumbup Oh man, those old Maxell tapes.....printing out the "J" cards, wondering how the hell to get the hiss out........good times. I listened to a LOT of crappy sounding tapes trying to convince myself they weren't that bad

  14. I've traded with a guy who was at the GD's first show in NYC (Tompkins Square Park, 6/1/67). His last GD show was in the 90s. Wrap your arms around that thought for a moment!

Thats sweet. Like I said I really wish I couldda seen 'em back in late 60's early 70's. I was lucky enough to see my first show in 78 and my last in 95, though for a while in the early 90's I stopped goin to Dead shows and just went to JGB shows.

  15. "Black Peter" Grateful Dead

All of my friends come to see me last night,

I was laying in my bed and dying.

Annie bonneau from st. angel say the weather down there so fine.

Just then the wind came squalling through the dark,

But who can the weather command?

Just want to have a little peace to die,

And a friend or two I love at hand.

Fever roll up to a hundred and five.

Roll on up, gonna roll back down.

One more day I find myself alive,

Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground.

See here how everything lead up to this day,

And its just like any other day thats ever been.

Sun going up and then the sun going down.

Shine through my window, and my friends they come around, come around

The people might know, but the people dont care,

That a man can be as poor as me.

Take a look at poor peter, hes lying in pain,

Now lets come run and see, run and see,

Run and see, run, run and see, and see.

  16. I've said before in previous years here when the date comes around but 6/10/73 is one of my all time favorites - maybe even my very favorite. Morning Dew to open! Playin' to close the first set! A lengthy second set, with one of the best Eyes I've ever heard. Plus a killer Dark Star, with lots of space and bass from the Professor. And then of course the 3rd set with the Brothers. A must have show imo.

Absolutely correct! Can only imagine what that would have been like to be there........or back in 72, or 69, or..........

  17. I requested "Wishful Thinking" in person to Jeff before the Nashville show, and it didn't get played, but he said they were gonna play "Pieholden Suite" which was my request through the website a week or so before. :) and the lucky people who saw the show in AL the day after the Nashville show got to hear "Wishful Thinking" (lucky ducks)

So, they do honor website requests. :)

When they played that one in Nashville I nearly fell over when it started, looked at my friend and said "Holy CRAP!!" and she looked like: :mellow

    :lol

One day you will hear it!

Yep...I too requested Pieholden through the website for Nashvegas so......take that with however many grains of salt you wish

  18. Big time in agreement with Lynch for "Most of the Time" and "Not Dark Yet", also with Mrs. Peel for "It Makes No Difference" especially the Last Waltz version

    I would add:

Comes A Time - Grateful Dead

I Shall Be Released - The Band/Bob Dylan
