  1. If memory serves the feeling was that perhaps an over-zealous security guard type may have caused that kid to fall or be pushed off an overpass. Would not surprise me, I always thought the dudes at the Byrne were waaaaaay into a power trip / get outta my face kind of thing.

  2. Dead serious. That might be the best trade the Dolphins have made in years.

He's a good slot reciever. But, to be honest, anyone could have gotten 100 catches in that system playing slot. The fact that he was good for them doesn't change that they gave up a 2nd and 7th rounder for him. That was a steal for the Phins.

True that a lot of guys could have had 100+ receptions in the Pat's scheme but Welker is a YAC machine, the guy had over 1100 yards this year (with 8 TD's). He also adds value as a fairly decent (not spectacular) punt returner. I think it was worth a second and a seventh round pick for him...also I may be wrong but wasn't Sammy Morris a part of that deal as well? Before he got hurt he was giving the Pats some solid running. Time will tell how it all works out....maybe Miami will draft some guy that comes out of nowhere with one of their picks ( a la Brady) but I think it was a decent trade and don't feel they overpaid,,,,but thats just my opinion. As usual bobbob you provide food for thought with your analysis....whattya think about the Big Tuna runnin' football ops for the fins? Who's gonna be the next Head Coach down there?

  3. How did the Patriots buy their team?

They made an unbelievably bright move by trading a 4th rounder for Moss, and then overpaid for Welker.

hmmmm....over paid? Not sure I agree with that. Welker was (is) an intregal part of the Pats attack. The guy had over 100 receptions and is a great weapon to use when they gotta throw short. He has come up with many big plays this year. Are you serious or goofin?

  4. Oughtta be a good game.

As a Giants fan, this was the most satisfying win since Super Bowl XXV. Eli's third straight game with a QB rating over 100 and turning the tables on a team that thought it was the hottest shit in the NFC. To beat Terrell Owens is priceless. Will Jessica Simpson ever be allowed to set foot in the state of Texas again?

:dancing How long until T.O starts blasting Romo and whomever else in the media for loosing this game? How you like the Jints chances vs GB?

  5. Now see, that's the kind of stories we need - the good times.

Thanks man. I'm glad you're ok from the "gun incident" the other day. :thumbup

Twas a good time indeed......and thanks for the thanks...was kinda nerveracking but in the end not a big deal. I think that guy learned a valuable lesson. I've had other close calls before, but that was the first time an actual shot got fired...usually some inexperienced fool is waving the gun around and it gets pointed at you and thats all...but whattya gonna do? I dig guns and teaching folks how to use 'em....truth be told I'm not sure how close that round passed to me, it was close but most likely what I felt was all the gas and crap coming out of the muzzle....anyways.....I have all kinds of bizzare stories from Dead shows, who doesn't? That sort of thing lends itself to seeing the Dead I think. One of the funnier ones was at my first show in Springfield, MA back in 78 (gloriously preserved on DP25!!). I was like 12 years old and in the lobby getting a drink and this chick comes up to me and asks if I wanted any acid. I was like "now why would I want that, that stuff can cause burns and is dangerous" Of course scant few years later I finally got it figured out :stunned

  6. OK. I have one extra ticket for the 3/2/07 Ryman show. The seat is Balcony Just slightly off center stage in row F...it's a decent seat

Whomever replies first gets it....you can either PM me or email to: Guitarcia@comcast.net

In the interest of spreading the joy (and just 'cause I get a kick out of it ) the ticket is free to the first person who wants it.... You will be seated with me and my girlfriend (who has never seen the boys) and we are both half-way respectable people and fairly laid back so you should have a good time.

Again, the ticket is 100% free...no strings attached. I will give it to the first person who claims it...I know it's a Friday night and a lot of folks may not see this right away so, sorry.... but if you act fast this amazing offer can be YOURS!

EDIT: 1-13-07 looks like I have a taker....ticket is gone

  7. do ya remember at MSG, when they had the giant gorilla on the roof wearing a tie dye ?

Yeah..thats on the cover of what is it DP9? (I think)...funny MSG story I think I posted on the previous Dead topic pages....At a show there back in 92 or so (Rex Benefit) anyways having a great time hooting and hollering....I ended up dropping this setlist thingy I was holding into the row in front of me, so I bend over the seat back to pick it up and this chick in that seat turns around, gets in my face and yells "I'll fucking stab you!" apparently she thought I was goin for her bag or something...only in NY.....we all had a good laugh at that....getting threatened by a tripped out earthy-crunchy at a Dead show in NYC. We were laughing so hard in the cab on the way back to the hotel the cabbie was like what's so funny back there?...I was laughing so hard I was crying and could not answer....of course the large amounts of mushrooms and beer were taking their toll that night....trippin in NYC at the Hyatt hotel right across from the Chrysler Building...surreal. ahhhh, as the fat man sang "gone are the days"

  8. To each his own, of course, but I highly prefer both '83 and '85 to '84 and would even slip '88 into that category. Not that there weren't good/great shows in '84, but I prefer the cocaine-fueled Garcia ferocity of a lot of the '83 catalog and the experimentation with set lists and stray/rare tunes from '85. And for '88 (and '89, really) Brent was particularly on fire imo.

yeah some good stuff those years....glad yer back Lam

  9. June 1974 has got to be one of top 5 months in GD history. I've never heard a weak show from that month.

Even though the 7/31 is longer I think 7/19 kicks its ass (from the same time frame). All in all though the whole year is must-hear stuff. There are only about 40 Wall of Sound shows. Essential listening.

    :worship here here

  10. Those three nights were just about the best run I ever saw. On the DVD you can see my van on there!

Your van eh? Microbus or souped up 70's style with the lift kit and shag carpeting and a waterbed in the back? :thumbup

That video ( Downhill ) is actually pretty good. As discussed before I'm not a big fan of the 80's-90's Dead but those were definately smoking shows. Lots of energy evident just from watching the video. Thats the thing about that time period that always gets me. Shows were hit and miss. Some nights the boys would just groove and other nights they just seemed to be phoning it in. There weren't a lot of consistently great nights....but thats not to say that there weren't some really great shows during this time. I'm gonna make an effort to listen to some more 80's and 90's stuff this year.

  11. That song is a good example of the breadth and scope of the GD songbook. I caught that song more times than I can count. Sometimes, it was just a first set filler yawnfest. But if Jer was on it could really rip your face off.

The thing that is interesting to me about West LA is that there is no rhythm from the guitars or bass - it's ALL lines...counterpoint.

There is a killer version of West LA on the Downhill From here video. Jerry is really rocking out in that one....may be the best version I've ever heard

  12. I completely understand this. The drug thing was an imposition at best, and regarding the gate-crashing I'll just say this: when the fences at Deer Creek came down I was in the 6th row with my friend who I had followed the GD with for 15 years and we both just looked at each other and said (at the same time) "well, this is the last straw for me - NO MORE!"

One of the saddest days of my life - it had to happen in my backyard you know. :ohwell

It did get pretty crazy....I stopped going to shows in 92 or so and only went to JGB shows....great tunes different vibe. I remember the good old days back in late 70's early 80's when you could walk up to the arena the night of a show and get a ticket, no one was getting too crazy, and the vibe was way more mellow......whattya gonna do?

  13. Thanks for the recommendation. I've heard a bit about The District, but can't really discern whether it's the same thing as "downtown". Is there a famous guitar shop down there, or one that anyone knows of that sells nice used and new guitars? Thanks again for anyone that can chime in here and provide some suggestions.

You are thinking of Gruhn Guitars. It's at 400 Broadway, but isn't open on Sundays......gruhn link. When they say district they are talking about lower Broadway. Pretty much 2nd through 4th aves. That is considered downtown as far as the sites to see goes. There are other areas of interest however. The West End area (about a mile or two down south on Broadway) is where Vanderbilt University is, there are some good places to eat and drink there. Green Hills is further south of downtown and is an upscale area with some good eateries. Belle Meade is the ritzy part of town and there are some interesting neighborhoods (if you dig looking at big houses) but not a lot of bars and places to eat. East Nashville is kind of fun. There are really cool artisan shops and pubs and such, but there are also some dicey areas in that part of town.

I would suggest sticking to the lower broadway-west end-green hills parts of town as they are fairly close together and on the main roads. There isn't a whole lot of touristy places in other parts of town such as Madison, Antioch and such. Check out East Nashville if you have time, but as I said there are some less than stellar neighborhoods there. You can easily have a great time from 2nd ave up to 8th ave...Broadway is the main N-S road through this area and there are many, many joints right on Broadway or off on the numbered aves. You can easily walk the whole area, and it would probably be better to do so as parking can be a problem, though there are a lot of large garage type lots around as well as some smaller lots, but they can be a bit pricey. I would suggest staying in that area (lower broad) there are a lot of hotels and you may get a deal as March is not exactly a big tourist time.

    Hope this helps!

  14. I shouldn't have to convince anyone outside of New england. Play of the game had to be the 15 yard unsportsmanlike on Toomer. N.E player taunts Giants sideline and trips over his own feet therefore 15 yard penalty on Toomer.

I don't think the officiating was the real question. The real question is will Bill Simmons write an article about how Brady is a stats/record whore much like he did Peyton in 2004. I'm saying no....wouldn't be the New England way.

Nah it wasn't Manning coming kind of unglued in the 3rd quarter or their horrible clock management.... or the 'Jints giving up what 22 unanswered points?

  15. As we get closer to the Deadhead's favorite holiday the question presents itself: what is your favorite GD NYE show?

    I have the following (on CD and/or cassette): '72, '76, '78, '81, '82, '84, '85, '87, '88, '89, '90 and '91. It's a real toughie but I'll give the nod to either '78 (closng of Winterland, first Star since '74) or '90 (w/ Branford and Bruce).

Jerry Xmas & Happy New Weir to all! :cheers

Casting the vote for 78. I never get tired of watching that. You knew they were gonna tear it up being the last gig at Winterland.

And I second the happy new year (weir) to everyone as well. :)

  16. I just got back from seeing this movie. I loved it, thought it was very well done.

My 2 cents.....Consider the title "No Country For Old Men". One of the themes I see in this movie is the despair by the older folks. Tommy Lee Jones pondering retirement because he feels overwhelmed, the sherrif in El Paso going on about how the world is changing, people have no respect, etc...I thought the message is that as time progresses the old gaurd feels like they have no place. The morals, ideals, and everything they are used to are going away, replaced by a new generation with its own ideals and morals ( or lack thereof ). They feel like they have no country anymore,. The country they were used to has been taken over by things they just don't know how to deal with. Also, in the beginning Tommy Lee Jones is narrating about the old time sherrifs and how they ran things and how things are now changing. Kind of adds to my thoughts about the theme.

Anyways, it's a damn fine movie no matter what. I would reccomend it.

  17. Well of course I'd say yes. :stunned The first set ends with a looong '74- style Playin', there's a nice dreamy Eyes in the second set as well as a stand alone Scarlet Begonias. The real clincher for me is the Help > Slip > Drums > NFA > Morning Dew sequence late in the show. I think it might be the first Dew since Oct. '74 - a powerhouse version.

agreed.......thats a really nice help>slip. Also at the end during We Bid You Goodnight theres some interesting very light instrumentation going on in the background. It's a 76 show but there is a slight flashback kind of quality to 72-74 throughout.
