  1. I'm sure I'll catch a lot of shit for this but here goes. The fact of the matter is that nothing could have prevented this. If someone really has a grudge or a suicidal wish to kill and then commit suicide or whatever they will do so. I whole heartedly agree with 2 Bob's previous post about the only thing stopping this would have been an armed citizen. You can have all the gun laws you want. These laws do nothing to stop criminals or other people who can not legally purchase weapons. Why? Because such people do not legally purchase guns at stores they get them off the street. Yes this individual legally purchased firearms, when you buy a weapon you fill out a form called a form 4473, on that form you must answer questions regarding your legal ability to purchase a firearm. One of the questions is if you have been judged mentally incompetent, defective, or have been committed to a mental facility. Due to confidentiality laws if you have sought mental treatment but were not committed or otherwise involuntarily placed there will likely be no record of that. Obviously this guy had nothing on his record, or either there was missing info.

This guy, for whatever reason choise to kill people then take his own life. I would argue that had an individual at the scene been carrying it could have either been stopped or there could have been less of a loss of life. There are a lot of violent people out there who simply do not care about you or your loved ones. It's up to you to protect yourself. I don't have the case name or the official name of the decision but the Supreme Court has ruled on this. The police are under no obligation to protect you. They can not be held liable for their failure to respond to a situation. Dialing 911 takes seconds, response may take minutes. You are on your own. Gun free zones and other laws of the like do nothing but let bad people know where the easy targets are. Anytime there is a mass shooting look at where they happen. Most of the time they take place in "gun free zones" you rarely read about mass shootings in gun stores, or other areas where the liklihood of people carrying firearms is high.

I'm a firm believer in carrying a gun for personal protection. I have taken the time to get the proper training, gone through the extensive background checks needed (where I live in Tennesse the state checks you, and the FBI checks you), and choose to carry a loaded pistol everywhere it is legal for me to do so. I would urge anyone else that is interested to do the same. Learn how to operate a firearm safely, take the necessary permit classes, continue with additional training, and be able to protect you and your loved ones because no one else is going to do it for you.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I feel very strongly about this issue. To those who don't like the idea of people carrying, or who don't like guns I respect your opinions, I simply do not share them. If anyone is interested you can PM me and I can provide you with all sorts of links to various sites that will provide info on how to obtain a carry permit, where to find training, etc. If you live in Wisconsin or Illinois...sorry your states will not issue you a permit, they don't believe in your right to protect yourself. Some other states are also very very restrictive about this as well notably NY and Mass.

  2. Echoing what BWW said. Was pretty bad. Right where I live (In South Nashville) we didn't get it too bad, couple of trees down but to the west of us in the next county there were some deaths and a bunch of homes destroyed. That fucker hit them then kind of lifted over Nashville then set down again to the northeast and demolished another little community, blew up a gas pipeline then jumped the state line into KY and wreaked havoc there.

I'll also say that I have never seen black on the weather radar either...creepy stuff. The news here does a really great job of letting people know whats going down, they were on from 7 to well past midnight non-stop, updating and tracking stuff.

Crazy thing is it's not even Tornado season here yet...It gets like this in March and April

  3. Didn't listen in....I dunno it just ain't the same for me w/o Jerry....could never get into the Further stuff, Other Ones, The Dead, etc... (though I have seen Ratdog a few times). I kinda got cheezed out a bit at the overt politics thing too. Yeah over the years The Dead have championed some causes (SF Mime Troupe, Seva, Rex Foundation, etc) but they usually never seemed (to me) to endores overtly political candidates. I love the music but I'd go to a rally if I wanna hear how great some politician is.

  4. 30 years ago today:

    2/5/78 - Uni-Dome, Cedar Falls, IA

I: Bertha > Good Lovin', BE Women, El Paso, T. Jed, Sunrise, Minglewood, FOTD, Passenger, Deal

    II: Scarlet > Fire, Samson, Ship, Truckin' > Drums > O1 > W. Rat > Around

    E: U.S. Blues

Available as Dick's Picks #18. The ScarFire is easily a top 10 for the Kieth and Donna era. I'm real partial to the Around as well... this was when they went to double-time at the end, bring it down to a whisper, then BAM back to a loud rockin' ending.

Bust it out if you have it! :cheers

Yeah a good show(s) if you listen real closely during the first couple of minutes of "Eyes" on that DP (from the night in Madison, WI) there is an amazing run of Garcia cranking out what sounds like about 100 notes in about 3 seconds. Just crazy/scarry playing

  5. Well....debating who is an all time great and the best ever etc, etc, etc is fun and great for sports arguments, and you can rag on Bellicheck. That being said (and yeah I'm a Pats fan) I doubt there are more than a handful of people who wouldn't want either one on the team they root for.

Anyways....You gotta hand it to the Giants, they simply outplayed the Pats and deservedly won. Like everyone else I still can't believe that Eli didn't get sacked and how the hell did that guy Tyree make that catch....pretty incredible stuff.......bastards :stunned

  6. Hey Lammy...not raggin' on you or anything but to say thats cocky and whatnot is flat out wrong. It's a 48-49 yd fg which is never a gimmie with a kicker that shanked a kickoff not too too long before. If it was a 40 or less yard attempt I'd say sure kick it, but an almost 50yd fg....I dunno, your too close to punt so why not go for it?

  7. Is sarcasm really that hard to spot... especially when followed up with my non-sarcastic screed in the same post?

Yeah I guess it was hard to follow your sarcasm... so point taken, however this is something I feel strongly about and I don't really feel that any sarcasm or joking of any kind is warranted when your talking about US Service members getting killed. I guess it just affects me harder. I was over there in Gulf War I for almost 13 months and it puts me into a different frame of refference.

  8. Yeah. 4000 dopes who were duped into becoming Bush's baby killers.

What I love more than "instant historical perspective" (now the norm), is assuming that no one in the military had personal convictions or beliefs that led to them signing up for the mission.

Dopes????!!!!! I usually stay away from the political threads because everybody has their own opinions and thats fine, but this comment really pisses me off. You may not like the war, you may not like the politicians who are involved in it, you may not even like the military, but how fucking dare you call anyone who has died (or served) over there a dope.

It's real easy sitting in your comfy house typing in stupid shit like this, without thinking one whit about what the folks over there are dealing with. We have an all volunteer military these days and you better be thankful that there are people who are willing to put themselves at risk to do this utterly thankless job.

Argue all you want about this war being a political move or about oil or whatever...thats fine, but think about calling someone a dope who is willing to put his/her ass on the line when shit like this goes down. I don't know you, don't know your politics, don't know your background...you may be a hell of a person, but to call these people who have perished over there doing what they feel is right dopes, is , at the least callous and shockingly disrespectful. I don't want to sound like an ass but shame on you.

  9. The V-Day ritual here is to listen to 2/14/70. We're incurable romantics.

Good evening....so nice to see you count Dracula

Ha Ha Ha Ha I want to wish you all a happy Valentine's day. I was going to come down the aisle in a casket but the damn thing broke

I'm still bothered by those crabs I caught at channel 47

Anyway it wasn't a casket, it was a bannana crate

Ha Ha Ha boy, boy well well, this is glorius Sunday morning...The Grateful God Damned Dead!!!

  10. Valentines Day = Singles Awareness Day

It got so bad at the office where I used to work it wasn't even funny. The women that got stuff delivered would go around showing off their flowers, stuffed animals, etc and make fun of those that didn't get stuff or who didn't have a significant other....just evil shit there.

I like the way Jim Carey sums it up in the begining of Eternal Sunshine.......

  11. Has anyone else bought the Road Trips set yet? I just got mine yesterday and am giving it my first cursory listen. '79 is part of an era that is under-represented in my collection, and I've been on a huge GD kick lately (albeit mostly an early-70s one, which is a different beast) so this collection seemed like a good idea for broadening my horizons. (plus I fell for the "buy now and get the bonus disc!" thing, because the bonus disc looks arguably better than disc 1) I hope so, anyway. So far disc one is leaving me kind of cold. I have high hopes for disc 2 and 3, tho, so I'm not to complain yet.

Anyone else have this yet and have opinions?

I've had it for a couple of months now. Disc 2 and the bonus disc are a bit stronger. I've always been a real "primal dead " type of listener. I usually keep it to 68-74 about 80% of the time, but I figured, like you, I was under-represented with other stuff. I like this set of tunes. It's not gonna be my favorite, but it's pretty decent and I have listened to it multiple times. Latter year Dead ( to me ) just doesn't usually get me off. Thats not to say its bad, just that it doesn't have that same wow factor for me. This set is pretty good, but doesn't overwhelm me like a good 72 Playin or Darkstar does. That being said there is a fine, fine Terrapin. The Shakedown (always a good tune) is pretty interesting and the bonus disc has some good jams on it.

I like this concept (snippets of a tour rather than a full show ) even though I would rather see full shows a-la Dick's Picks as I like hearing how a full show develops it's ebbs and flows. That being said it will be interesting to see where this pans out...at least for me it will give me the opportunity to listen to some stuff I otherwise may not normally listen to.

  12. man, this is horrible news. and to top it off, just learned that Brad Renfro died on Jan. 18 2008 :mellow

Yeah and Suzane Pleschette (Newhart Show) died a couple of days ago as well. Not trying for gallows humor but these things do really happen in 3's it seems.

  13. Speaking of dire, I've always loved the fact that Garcia busted out (for the last time, no doubt) "Dire Wolf" in Deer Creek in July '95 after receiving a death threat in which the FBI were called upon. That second set, in fact, was played with the house lights on.

You gotta love that ( Pleeeeeeeeease don't murder me) Jerry could really have a funny sense of humor. I love the stage banter, especially from the 70's. That 10-30-71 (or is it 70?) show never fails to kill me with all the yuks. The classic retort to the guy yelling for Truckin' "what is it? you gotta be a cop man, is that it...play truckin, play truckin.....we'll play whatever we like" then Weir with his "whole load of live chickens" comment.

    Just cracks me up

  14. I'm tentatively a fan of the Parcells signing. He's shown a pretty consistent pattern of not being with teams long term, so I'd hate to see him set up shop for 2 years and then head out. Either way, there's no way he leaves the team in worse shape than he gets it. I'd like to see them talk to Cowher as a head coaching possibility, but I haven't heard anything about that.

I believe Morris was a FA. Just another in a line of mediocre Dolphins (Welker, Evans) who go to the Patriots and become good.

My point with Welker was he is a decent slot reciever, but he is more Brandon Stokely than he is Randy Moss. Small, quick guys can get lost fairly easily when you are running the spread offense like the Pats do, so he benefitted greatly from being in that system. Anywhere else and he is a 60 catch, 700 yard guy.

Also, the Phins drafted a center out of Hawaii with the Pats pick, and he started every game for them and actually played extremely well, so in my opinion, the Phins came out ahead with this one.

Parcells does have a habit of that (leaving early) He was negotiating with the Jets as he was coaching the Pats in the Superbowl back in 97..... As for Cowher you think he will be persuaded to come back next year? I was thinking he probably would do the tv gig for a year and then get back into it. I don't think he can stay away from it too long. The Tuna could have a few options later on this month, looking like perhaps Seattle may be considering a firing...Dungy may leave as well but talk is he's thinking about prison ministry instead of football...who knows
