  1. Ok that Rochester (11-5-77) show is a great "Eyes"...See I occasionally get into post 74 stuff (actually I listen to quite a bit of latter year Dead). That entire show has a funny kind of energy to it. If memory serves that's the one where Phil is letting loose with all kinds of bombs is it not? Also the "Take a step back" rap is kinda funny on that Jerry: All these people in front are getting horribly smashed" Bob: Moooooove back! Mooooove back !

I wish I had a disc or two worth of stage banter some funny funny stuff over the years. Still my favorite 10-30-70 Cinci, Ohio Jerry: Whattya got to be a cop? (to fan yelling "Play Truckin'!") is that it? Play Truckin, Play Truckin'...........We'll play whatever we like!

Bob: You folks underneath the lip of the baa, balll, balcony (Jerry: B B B B Balcony!) better watch out one of these minutes theyre gonna drop a whole load of live chickens on ya....

I was just realizing it's coming up on 13 years since my last show (4-2-95) in Memphis. Short show but did get to hear Unbroken Chain as the encore

  2. Just my opinion but the Eyes on the So Many Roads boxset and GD Movie is my favorite all time version. I believe it's 10-19-74. A close second is the 6-18-74 Louisville, KY version.

I agree, keep to prior 1976. Later versions don't have that great jam at the end and seem to be to "speedy". But what do I know right? Anything past 1974 rarely gets played in these ears :stunned

    More Primal Dead!

  3. Seems like a lot of "Shed" style places are succumbing to developers. Starwood here in Nashville is gone....torn down for condos, houses, and a "mixed use" retail area. Just what we need another plazza with a Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, and Pottery Barn.....seems to be a trend with these outdoor venues that were / are owned by Clear Channel

  4. I thought that was weird, too, in a very sweet, trusting way. The only time anyone looked at our tickets was when we got to our section.

We stopped by Hatch Show Prints on Broadway before leaving town today. I was talking to one of the employees, mentioned how much I loved last night's print, and I got to meet the artist. :) Very sweet kid; he couldn't have been more than 21, 22 years old. I was wishing I'd left the print in my purse so he could sign it next to Jeff's autograph.

Darkstar, I let my husband spend money at Gruhn's. He bought a beautiful leather guitar strap made in Franklin. Absolutely perfect souvenir!

Nice!!! If you get a chance PM me a pic of it I'd love to see it. So you "LET" him spend money eh?......was the strap some kind of compromise on a , let's say a vintage sunburst Fender or some other treasure? :shifty

On an unrelated note I spoke to a buddy of mine who is a (more than casual, but not exactly an obsessive) Wilco fan and read him the set list from last night. He was pretty stunned and expressed his wish for them to get out to LA quick. Still grinning goofily from last night. I think all who attended were given a very special treat.

  5. I wish you had! You could have joined us at Roberts Western World after the show!

Believe me, if you see someone in a crowd who you think might be me, it's probably me. I stand out a little. :)

When we were walking out, I thought about using my general tactic for finding internet people in a crowd: I damn near yelled "Darkstar!" to see if anyone answered.

Ah well. I'm sure we'll be back soon. We kind of fell in love with this city.

Not yet. They were closed by the time we got to Broadway on Saturday. Brian rubbed his face on the windows, and possibly licked them, when we were on Broadway Saturday night. We're going tomorrow before we leave town.

Saturday we had dinner at Jack's, then spent most of the night at Roberts. We also hit the Ernest Tubb Record Shop, where I went a bit hog wild.

Sunday, we had Pie Pantry for breakfast, hit the Hall of Fame (loved it!), had dinner at Demo's with Elixir Sue and Dude, followed by the show and more Roberts.

Monday, it's Hatch Show Prints, Gruhn's, and on the road to pick up our dogs by 6 PM.

Good deal!!!! Leave the cash and credit cards before going into Gruhn's.....dangerous place. Glad you enjoyed Nash Vegas. Sorry we didn't meet and you guys have a safe trip home....I'm finally ready to crash....was kinda keyed up after that show.......

  6. Awesome!

Weren't you in section 11 of the balcony? I kept looking for you, although I had no idea what to look for!

That pretty much sums up the whole show.

    I should sleep. Can't.

I was in 12, I did see you, well thought it was you anyways and then when you posted about hollering down over the railing before the show I knew it was...I was gonna go over and say Hi but I wasn't sure and didn't wanna just go over and say hey are you poppy? I was off to your left in 12 row F wearing the black hoodie and the red sox hat. I saw you and your husband walk in....there was like 15 people in the balcony at that point. Shoulda said Hi I guess but like I said, wasn't sure......

    You guys get to Gruhn's?

  7. This coupling damn near knocked me on my ass. Incredible.

Does anyone know what all the videotaping was for? Of course, I'm speculating perhaps a future DVD release, what with the long and varied set list. I haven't heard anything, though.

Yeah, one of the video tapers asked if she could film me and my girlfriend as we were sitting outside before the show....when she was done I asked her what was up....she said they are filming a documentary of this tour and it should (her words) be out in a year or so.

  8. Yeah....absolutely amazing. Very high energy throughout. Jeff in the Nudie suit, Nels gyrating and twitching......I'm drained from just listening, dunno how these guys do it night in and night out. Flat out the best band out there, and at the top of their game. I'll echo Poppy....seeing (and hearing) Jeff doing an un-amplified and un-miked Someone Else's Song was pretty amazing, reminded me of the last Ryman show when he did Acuff-Rose like that. Very, very nice.

  9. So excited 'bout this show.....

Took all morning to get tix when they went on sale

Got Balcony sec 9, row A seats 4-5

Which puts me on the FIRST row of the balcony stage left

The way the balcony appears to wrap around in photos I have seen, this puts me just a few feet from the stage with a totally unobstructed view!.......some of the best seats in the house if you ask me.....anyone been there who can comment?

You are correct...you will be about 20-30 feet from the front of the stage and about 10 feet high...completely unobstructed view....your gonna love it. The balcony seats (and front row especially) are the best seats in the house (though with only 2200 or so seats there aren't any bad ones, even the obstructed view seats are not horrible ). The place is so small that even though you are stage left you will easily be able to see the entire band...hell yer gonna be close enough to see the sweat dripping on their faces.

  10. Have you ever heard the story about that show (it is 5/11/78 Springfield, right)? Crazy night indeed!

Yep 5-11-78. Oh yeah, the stories are true....I wasn't really in to them as much as I would be at later points (hey I was 11! and it was the first rock concert I ever went to), but even my naive 11 year old self knew that the guys were....ah....enhanced to some extent. Allegedly the story goes they were on mescaline. I remeber people going nuts during the entire gig and though I didn't know why I knew it was something good ( when Weir came out with the gorilla mask I was like what......?)...Obviously this show started my life long love of the boys...I was lucky that particular was my first. I remeber the next time I saw them....memory is foggy but I know it was in 1981 I was like hmmmm this wasn't like the last time.

I could never find a good tape of this show and pretty much gave up until dp25 came out. I was stoked (plus I got the cool 25 so far T shirt with it).

  11. Thanks for the head's up. It's been over a decade since I've been to Nashville. We're driving. Even though I say I'd like to park the truck and not get in it until time to go home, I know we'll be running around, so it's no biggie.

I live about five miles from downtown East St. Louis. I do okay with dicey parts of town. :thumbup

We're in the balcony, too. Can't remember what section, but it's on the John and Pat side.

My husband wants to know where he might find a good, interesting guitar shop.

Gruhn's , 400 Broadway...kind of right around the corner from the Ryman link to gruhns Seriously nice stuff...you may wanna leave the credit cards at home if you go to this place. They have all sorts of rare and vintage stuff. They usually have a bunch of stuff previously owned by various stars, etc.

  12. 1. You saw the Dead when you were 12? Faaar out.

    2. I agree with you about Wilco. The residency performances are head and shoulders better than the performances on Kicking Television, which were pretty good. A shame they didn't wait a few years to let this lineup season a bit before putting out a live album.

actually I was 11....didn't turn 12 until October of that year!!!!! It was quite a feat, my Dad was a middle school pricipal and he damn well knew what that scene was all about, my friends big brother took us....to this day I'm still amazed my rock solid conservative dad let me go......go figure......I did wait a few years before I started sampling the chemicals though :shifty

  13. Another anniversary today. 39 years ago (damn it's hard to comprehend next year will be 40 years) at the Fillmore West the most perfectly realized version of Dark Star ever played. It might not be my favorite but it's just a seamless version.

All who have the Fillmore Run (via box set, cds or cassettes) should bust these things out for the next 4 days. I know I will!

Hell Yeah!!!!! My favorite period. Primal Dead at it's best. I have always loved that Darkstar, (and all Darkstars) and when I got to hear it in it's full transition from Mountains Of The Moon into DS...yikes....as far as I'm concerned it is my first among equals of Darkstars. Oddly enough it wasn't the first one I ever heard, I had been exposed to some seriously trippy 72 Darkstars before I ever got my lysergic hands on Live Dead. I would have loved to have seen the boys in this time period (but I was only 3 back in 69) ah well....I did get to see 'em in 78 ( recorded for all time as DP25!) and then throughout the 80's and early 90's so....

Thats why I'm glad I'm around to see and appreciate Wilco these days. I think we are witnessing a band at it's absolute peak.

  14. My friend gave me her issue of Bust with the Nashville article today!

Grimey's Record Shop at 1604 8th St. South looks interesting.

Music-wise, I think I'm going to check out Layla's Bluegrass Inn (418 Broadway) and Tootsie's Orchid Lounge (422 Broadway).

East Nashville looks to be the arty party of town. Darkstar, is that near Vandy? Family Wash (2038 Greenwood Ave.) looks interesting. It's an old laundromat that's been turned into a restaurant and bar.

They've got a roller derby team! Unfortunately, they don't have a bout scheduled this weekend.

Looks like there's lots of art galleries downtown.

12 West district for indie shopping. I want to check out Katy K's Designs, just for the awesome cowgirl sign out front.

I'm really excited about this weekend, not just for the show. I've been to Nashville once, but it was a brief visit. I was passing through and did a quick tour and dinner with a friend who was at Vandy. I'm really looking forward to having some time to explore the city.

Hey Poppy...sorry East Nashville isn't the Vandy part of Town. East Nashville is on the other side of the river (Cumberland) it's too far to walk, and even if it wasn't there are many dicey areas there. If you are driving in and have a car it's an easy enough drive over there...you can get directions from the mapquest or whatever. Like I said there are some kind of dicey areas in East Nashville, it's not like Beirut or anything but just be as cautious as you would be in any city. The parts of East Nashville where the bars and stuff are is fine...you just gotta go through the dicey parts to get there. Nashville can be a bit confusing if you are not used to it driving around so invest in printing out some maps before you head out. If any of you that are coming in would feel better to have a local available for questions or directions PM me and I'll be happy to give you my cell number to keep handy. No I won't come and bail you out at 3 in the morning, but I will gladly tell you how to get somewhere or where a good place to eat is. I'll make sure to check for any PMs throughout the weekend. I hope everyone has a great time in Nashville this weekend. I'll be up in the balcony in Section F myself....... Oh yeah....not that anyone would, but be careful if you drink...Nashville cops are really into DUI enforcement especially during the weekends.

  15. hi, there-

i'll be heading to nashville this weekend for the ryman show and was hoping to get some recommendations for things to do while there: places to eat? bookstores? record stores? sights not to miss? anything would be appreciated.

p.s. i'm staying downtown not too far from the ryman and don't think i will have a car.

Well.....In Nashville you kind of need a vehicle. Right smack dab in downtown there is tons of "touristy" stuff but if you are looking for book stores record stores your kind of out of luck without a car. Up around the Vanderbilt area there are some cool places but it's probably too far to walk ( I'd say it's at least 2 miles from downtown to the WestEnd -Vandy area). Cabs are an expensive option in Nashville, and it's not like other bigger cities you have to call for them, you can't hail them on the street. There are lots of places to eat in the downtown area so thats a plus. Again realize you will be exposed to the more tourist oriented stuff downtown....the cool out of the way stuff are in other parts of town....when you get in look for a copy of The Scene (our local "alternative" paper. They will have lots of listings for stuff to do) One thing I know thats going on over this weekend is an exhibit at The Frist Center (museum) of modern masters called From Monet to Dali. The Frist is located at 919 Broadway which is walkable from downtown (Broadway is the main North South road in the DT area) www.fristcenter.org
