  1. Levon Helm was in The Right Stuff ". . . and I do believe that is 'top-trump', gentlemen!"

    Edit: damn it, too slow!

Dang, I was sitting here thinking, Levon Helm?? In The Right Stuff?? I've seen that movie like 100 times! Who was he?? So I go to IMDB and I see he's Ridley! Yeager was always asking him to loan him a stick of Beeman's gum. I had to track Beeman's down just to see what it was all about years ago.

  2. I hope it's not true, either. But I decided long ago to separate a public figure's talents from their personal life. For many years, I held Kirby Puckett up as a role model as a great athlete and person based upon his loyalty to his team and his community. Little did I know the sordid details of his personal life. After that incident, I try my best to remember that we only see a tiny fraction of a public persona's real self. If all of this is true, it's sad, but it doesn't change my appreciation for Murray's body of work.

  3. If anyone is actively using Pandora, I would be interested in sharing stations. I have 3 stations. One devoted to rock that started w/ the Old 97s, one devoted to jazz that started w/ Sonny Rollins, and one devoted to classical that started w/ JS Bach. PM me w/ your e-mail if you want to swap stations. I'd be curious what other Wilco fans' stations sound like.

  4. that's a fair list.

i'd add the old 97's too far to care, the first bottlerockets disc, one of the first two blue mtn discs, that first v-roys disc, and gillian's time the revelator ( in no particular order) to make a top ten.

V-Roys, just add ice. Man that's a great CD!!

  5. "Sky Blue Sky" makes "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "Summerteeth" look like self-indulgent side projects. You want to hear Jeff Tweedy with some keyboards and a mixer, stick to those albums. THIS is Wilco.

I can see how YHF can be considered self-indulgent (but still an incredible artistic achievement). Not really Summerteeth. While there are a few noises on it, it's still mostly about the songs.

Great summary of how I feel about SBS and the current Wilco lineup, though.

  6. Wow, I'd have to second this response. My sense is, as far as the band as a whole, Nels is the equalizer. Here is someone as talented (IMHO opinion, better) than Jay Bennett, but for Tweedy, this tremendous talent comes without the baggage, without the needing. Nels fully gives to the band's collaborations, and he has the other irons and artistic avenues that ego is removed from the picture. Complete conjecture, but I suspect there's a similar artistic approach with Nels as with Glenn -- two guys confident, extremely talented but w/out superstar egos. Each add their color to the pallete, all at Tweedy's disposal.

I agree with everything in your whole post, but esp. this first paragraph. You took the words right out of my mouth!

  7. He was good in serious roles like "Eyes Wide Shut" (one of the few things I liked in that movie, rare for Kubrick) and in comedic roles as well. His acting in "Tootsie" is as good as his direction. He really got a lot out of Bill Murray in a small role too.

  8. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, or Bryter Layter for that matter.

I picked up the Fruit Tree box set back in the 90s; that was the perfect introduction to Drake's music :).

Track 1 on Bryter Layter has some excellent guitar work by Richard Thompson.

  9. I am a causal Dead fan at best and have recently gone broadband. I would be interested in favorite torrents currently available on easy tree or dime. Maybe people's top 2 or 3 in terms of both recording quality and performance.

  10. Just came home from Iron Man. 1st movie in a theater in about 2 years. It was GREAT! Robert Downey was great as was Jeff Bridges. It was a bit hard for me to erase my image of Bridges as Lebowski to imagine him as an evil weapons dealer, but it worked. Can't wait for a sequel.

Glad to see Jon Favreau make such a great BIG movie.

  11. Hillary Cites RFK assassination in explaining why she's still in race

    She's a classy one!

Hillary Clinton today cited the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy during the 1968 presidential campaign to explain why she was remaining in the race despite long odds.

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California," Clinton told the editorial board of a South Dakota newspaper. " I don't understand it," Clinton added, alluding to the calls for her to quit.

Clinton made the statement after pointing out that her husband didn't lock up the nomination until June of 1992, trying to point out that, by past history, it's not late in the campaign.
