  1. I've hemmed and hawed about this since the topic came up, not knowing whether or not it was worth torturing someone to protect the greater good. If it worked, any of it. But I read this last night and my love for the Founding Fathers cemented me in believing that if torture was too terrible to birth our nation, its too terrible to protect it.

    These are just some excerpts:

    America's Anti-Torture Tradition

    by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Every schoolchild knows that Gen. George Washington made extraordinary efforts to protect America's civilian population from the ravages of war. Fewer Americans know that Revolutionary War leaders, including Washington and the Continental Congress, considered the decent treatment of enemy combatants to be one of the principal strategic preoccupations of the American Revolution.

"In 1776," wrote historian David Hackett Fischer in "Washington's Crossing," "American leaders believed it was not enough to win the war. They also had to win in a way that was consistent with the values of their society and the principles of their cause. One of their greatest achievements

Well, that'll do it. That's all we needed.

Edit: The "Go Fast" swooshes on the letters are a plus. Except the one on the the lower right portion of the "s", which makes no sense at all and pretty much ruins the whole thing. If you can ruin something totally stupid to begin with.

Edit: Or is that hair? Oh God.

  3. Bicycle "gangs" are a pretty hip trend here. Loads of tanked up hipsters cruising from Hamtramck to Detroit or around Ferndale. They name themselves, and at least a couple have jackets. They bemoan the loss of Polaroid, drink lots of PBR and generally annoy this shit out of me.

  4. Maybe I'll end up being the minority, but I personally wouldn't change the film, outside of maybe a different song selection. Most concert films suffer some criticism - even The Last Waltz isn't perfect, and Gimme Shelter is a fanstastic documentary and a so-so concert film. I think Ashes was a pretty good snapshot of the band right now and a bit of a window into what their touring experience is like, without getting dragged down into long-winded expository. I'm somewhat glad the film doesn't slow down into 2+ hours of narrative - which I think personally wouldn't have made for a great viewing experience. Most people are either going to want a greater exploration of the themes brought up in the film, or will have a "shut up and play" mentality, skipping ahead to the live performances. I think the film balances everything pretty well without being too indulgent in any specific area.

    I agree with this 100%.

  5. watched it last night. Fantastic. The sound mix is incredible.

not sure the point of having his father there, but it's easy to see how awkward their relationship is. Jeff might be a brilliant musician, but he is socially inept.

    Yer nuts.
