  1. Another great set list. I got a tremendous Poor Places>Reservations in E. Lansing. And Hell is Chrome, Sunken Treasure, Mountain Bed on Friday. Ashes would have been nice, but I'm thankful.

    How was Califone?

  2. My wife and I drove in to the big city for the day. A little lunch at Goose Island, a little window shopping, marveled at the chrome jellybean, checked out the great outdoor performance space at Grant? park (who plays there in the summer?), chatted with a cool cat from California at the Artist's Cafe, in other words made a whole day of it sans kids. Oh and we saw some cool local band called Wilco. It was the best time either of us has had in Chicago and we barely scratched the surface.

The theatre was tremendous. A real cultural gem. You folks are lucky to have such architechural history preserved and in use. We like to raze everything and put up ugly new buildings or parking lots.

The show highlights for me: Bob the Bunny, Hell is Chrome, Muzzle of Bees, Sunken Treasure, Mountain Bed. But really a stellar show all around. And who can argue with a 25 song setlist and 2 1/2 hour show.

Random observations: I found out I'm a shusher. I had persistent talkers behind me, which I can usually tune out, but once Muzzle started I had to tell em to shut it. The hometown crowd had the best energy of the three shows I've seen. Except for the loungers in those side boxes everyone was up and singing (or at least stroking their chin and nodding in appreciation).

    Finally,

Glenn is a madman. His drum solo was extremely worthy of that title (which I didn't think was the case in E.Lansing). I kept waiting for his kit to explode from all the energy he was generating. He could have powered a small city on his own.

  3. Where are the cool new bars in Detroit opening up? Corktown? Midtown? Perhaps I'll see if my friends want to try somewhere other than our usual (the Bronx and the Lager House) when I'm in town this weekend. Although I really do like to go to one or the other whenever I'm there.

Check out this place Cliff Bell's if you want a cool laid back atmosphere. It's also close to the Town Pump which is a bit rowdier and Centaur which I haven't been to, but sounds swanky.

Is The Bronx that bar on Cass by Wayne State? I've drank in an old bar over there, but can't remember the name. There used to be a coffee house (literally a house turned coffee shop) that hosted some great bands from time to time. I saw Medeski Martin & Wood there as well as Blonde Redhead. It was like seeing a band in someone's living room (complete with blown fuses).

The Buzz Bar in Greektown is also a cool place if your looking for live music. They usually have locals like Thornetta Davis, The Reefer Men, etc.

For sports I dig Coach's Corner over in Harmonie Park. And The Detroit Beer Co. (on Broadway) has good food, great beer, and has a great crowd to watch Pistons games.

  4. :thumbup Thanks for all the great info. We're having a lot of fun planning our day in the BIG city. I wish we had more time, but a day in Chicago is more fun than a week in Detroit (although there is a rash of cool new bars opening).

Thanks for the navigation tips Louie. Chicago is a snap to navigate compared to Detroit. Detroit is like a big spoked wheel half submerged in a river (except where the river curves) with random dimly lit one way streets. The downtown area is relatively small so you can't get too lost, but if you stray off the beaten path it gets rather dangerous quickly.

  5. We just got our poster a few days ago. It was mailed and we didn't receive it, so they mailed another non-personalized poster. We received both posters on the same day. I would definetly drop them a line. Everyone my wife e-mailed was very very helpful and very nice. A first class organization.

Really one of the finest most affordable American sparkling wines around. A tight fine bubble and a beautiful rich mouthfeel full of vibrant strawberry fruit.

ABC makes some of the most distinct wines in Cali. Great pinot noir, chardonnay, and a bevy of white Rhone varietals like marsanne and rousanne. The pinot noir is da bomb.

Both were served with pan roasted wild salmon with the finest Italian rosemary. My wife takes great care of me. I take care of the wine and she takes care of the rest.

For dessert? More bubbly of course!!! :D

  7. I wonder if this is going to be like The Def Leppard movie Vh1 made?

That was a really awesome car wreck of a biopic!

Michael Anthony Hall as Mutt Lang. How can you go wrong?

My buddy ran into C.C. Deville of Poison last week and chatted him up for a few minutes. It was a pretty funny conversation. They have one of my favorite Behind the Music episodes.

  8. Damn, now I'm presented with a dilemma. The entertainment budget is pretty tight so I have to choose between Califone in AA 45 min away or Ray Lamontagne downtown.

    Decisions, decisions.

I guess it's a the glass is full and I get to drink it too kinda choice. :beer

  9. Let's not forget that covering other peoples songs can be an art in itself. Taking someone elses words and transforming them into your own voice and feelings is difficult to do well (just watch 5 min. of American Idol). Some artists have crafted fine and illustrious careers from singing well written songs. One of my favorites, Emmylou Harris, is as big a supporter of songwriters and their art as you will find. It is nice to see her doing some of her own writing these days.

  10. DING DING DING!

It's not that it's bad, exactly... it's just there. The Who By Numbers. Ha.

    I rather like that album.

I'm a fan as well. I owned it on 8 track. To me it always seemed like a PT solo album featuring the Who.

I'm currently listening to the Who Are You demos I just downloaded.

By the way thanks for turning me on to Bootcity A-man.

  12. Krautrock influenced and Kid A stylings?

Does anyone actually believe that horseshite? Those songs are about as Krautrock as fucking Kylie! Fucking journos! They should be tied down and made to listen to Tangerine Dream for 24 hours staight. Knobheads!

On a lighter note...I see Jeff is recording in a "cum bunker". Must be a cruising ground nearby! :mellow

HAAAA!!! Cum bunker!!! I felt a little like Beavis when I read that.

  13. I once peed on a guys leg in freedom hall('82) at a Van Halen show because I did not want to loose my spot in the second row. He turned around and reared back to knock my block off and the security guards grabbed him over the barrier and threw him out. Not acceptable concert etiquette?

Perfectly acceptable for Van Halen in '82. Even downright commendable!!!
