  1. The timing of this thread is pretty funny for me. I got home from work early today and decided to surprise my wife with a clean house when she came home with the kids. Of course I needed some house cleaning music, so I grabbed a live Wilco show and popped it in the stereo. As I'm cleaning it suddenly occured to me, Bruce is no longer my favorite artist. He has been supplanted by Wilco. I grew up on the Boss. The formation of my first musical identity has a lot to do with, "waun, two, three, fawr highways jammed with broken heros on a last chance power drive....". The majesty and poetry of Bruce's lyrics backed by one of the greatest rock bands of all time has always given me solace in times of need and been a source of contemplation. After Tunnel of Love the albums seemed less important and the music began to drift away from me. My musical tastes were changing.

When my wife became pregnant with our first child six years ago I was scared shitless. I didn't know how to be a father, the world seemed to be falling apart, and stepping out of the shadows to guide me was Bruce with the music. By then the message board thing was in full swing and I found a great community at Greasy Lake. Bootlegs are no longer fading tapes or vinyl copies of dubious quality sold at exorbitant prices, but the shiny plastic cd that is easily copied and traded. The kind folks at Greasy Lake hooked a brother up and life was grand except... it was living in the past. The new releases are good, but merely good and they aren't necessarily groundbreaking. I never thought I would find that feeling I had the first time I huddled in front of my very own radio and heard Born to Run, or setting the needle down and hearing those opening piano notes for Darkness, or pumping my fist to insert shit-hot-and-rockin Bruce anthem here. But I did find that feeling again thanks to Mr. Tweedy and Co. The music gives me everything I need to keep me healthy and the concert tickets are cheaper (and the venues smaller). That said, Bruce is still at the top of my Five People I Would Love to Have Over for a BBQ list and that Roxy show still gets rocked out on a semi regular basis.

  2. Holy shit, someone told me that the tickets for asheville were $77 and $56. Mother-fucker is that expensive! I'm gonna have to skip this one sadly.

Yes, sadly my wife and I skipped as well. Throw in the charges, sitter, dinner, and drinks and it's a $200 night out. I'm consoling myself with Wilco tix to E. Lansing. My in-laws live 20 min. away so at least the sitter is free. :D

I'm sure everyone who bought tix will have the time of their life. I don't think I've ever met a half-hearted Tom Waits fan.

  3. true... I do need to snag that one, I was just hoping for the direct-from-soundboard version as well. I'm getting spoiled with all this torrents nonsense. In one week (time since I figured out how to download/convert etc.) I've gone from having only some crappy cds (that sound like they've been burned 3000 times) of some old shows to having some glistening vibrant full concerts, with the flacs on an external for safekeeping. I sleep better at night. ;)

I really need to figure out that torrents nonsense for myself. I'm so bloody tired by the time I get the kids to bed I have one beer and I'm asleep myself. Maybe this weekend!!!

  4. well, on the IATTBYH documentary, there is live footage of a Tweedy acoustic tour. At one show he did this really funny bit about how in his younger years he and his friends used 'cock' as a positive adjective, like:"Your bike is cock". This was hilarious, but as the Chapelle show has taught us, if you document someone creating a hilarious catch phrase the people of America will drive it into the ground until the very sound of it makes you angry. For example: Get 'er done. yuck!

We thought it was some Canadian slang!!! :D

  5. My wife and I drove up from Detroit for the show, our first. I'm the fan and she's game for any live music. We picked up our tickets and watched the band sound check as well. The sound check was great, but I was a bit worried after seeing the M's. Wilco's sound was much better especially on the vocal end. The setlist was straight forward. I was hoping for Hell is Chrome (maybe E. Lansing). I was caught off guard by a new song first song out. A pretty ballad which someone aptly compared to Muzzle of Bees. The other new song Impossible Germany was ok, but I hope it's not the best song on the new album. Lots of little highlights for me; mostly just seeing the guys rock out. My wife and I were laughing our asses off over Jeff's deadpan, "Thanks for the flag" as he left the stage. What's the Wilco is Cock joke?
