  1. Recently I've gotten a bit tired of listening to music at work, so I've started listening to a few podcasts, like NPR politics, Fresh Air and Ted Talks. Don't really know many and since we all obviously have great taste in music here  ;) I figured I'd start this up to see what kind of podcasts you guys are listening to and maybe pick up a few to add to my playlist!

  2. I've seen Wilco a bunch of times and will be seeing them Friday in Madison for the first time in a few years, so I have yet to hear any Star Wars stuff live. I say bring it on! Although I would like to hear some nice rarer gems mixed in, I'm pretty excited to hear stuff from Star Wars.

  3. It's funny, Neil has been my favorite for awhile.

I saw him for the first time excluding Farm Aid in Chicago in 07 I believe, during the trunk shows. Of all the songs he played, Mellow My Mind, Cowgirl in the Sand, Bad Fog of Loneliness, Ambulance Blues....one of the songs I remember most was No Hidden Path. Absolutely blew me away.

  4. Not a single song off of Being There or A.M., and only one off of Summerteeth? I would say the guy is nuts, but then the site is called rocknuts.net, so I guess that takes care of that.

He's right, though, in calling Jeff one of the great rock songwriters of all time.

It's tough because Wilco has so many of what I consider essential songs.

Just a quick look through their catalog and I'd have a hard time leaving off songs like

    Misunderstood

    Via Chicago

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

  5. I've been on and off with Wilco a bit lately, which is pretty normal for bands that I used to listen to non-stop. After that it comes and goes in waves, and I'm looking to find some new Wilco I haven't heard yet, so what better option than the roadcase in the store?!!  Only problem is there are like 44 shows in there and I don't really know anything about any of them.

So this is where you guys come in! Is there a consensus favorite among the roadcase shows? Right now I'm just kind of looking for one of these so what do you guys think are some of the standouts in this series?

Thanks and happy mother's day to all the wonderful mothers out there! :dancing

  6. I think it's a very good album! I've enjoyed all of their stuff though. Similar to Wilco, I think it's all good, some is just better than others.

Evil Urges and Circuital all had their great songs. I absolutely love Evil Urges, Smokin From Shooting, Touch Me Pt 2, Victory Dance, Circuital, Wonderful etc...but there are too many songs that don't have much of an identity.

The Waterfall on the other hand I feel is very cohesive and strong It really is an album that works best all the way through. I'm seeing them in Milwaukee and besides "the river" I really hope to hear all the new songs. In It's Infancy, Tropics, Only Memories Remain and Spring, all have potential to be absolute monsters live.

Definitely one of my favorite bands out there right now,

  7. Wintersleep :thumbup

    !!!

That was awesome, they were playing a small bar in Chicago and I talked to the band after they finished loading up their van. Really nice guys and they seemed geniunely surprised that only did someeone want them to sign something, but that I had Welcome to the Night Sky on vinyl ha.

Really hope they head back to the area again.

  8. So I'm trying to get a bit of a collection of signed records by my favorite bands. So far it's very low key with the Heartless Bastards, Wintersleep and The National.

Wilco would absoutely be the gold standard for me being my favorite band.

With that said, if I were to try and get a record signed by the band, is it in poor taste if it's an older album?

With the current lineup all I have on vinyl is the Whole Love, which got kind of beat up, and Kicking Television, which would be awesome, but it's so thick I don't know what I'd do with it afterwards.

I feel like it'd be weird getting an album done by the older lineup signed by the newer lineup.

    Am I overthinking this?

  9. Just finished reading A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick last night.

It's funny, some years ago I remember seeing the movie and loving it.

I re-watched the movie last night after finishing the book and now I hate the movie haha. Lacked the majority of character progression for Arctor and when Arctor goes through his issues near the end, the film does a horrible job setting that up while the book really made it fit the arch.

  10. So the people complaining will still be taking the refund and not going, right?

Because it wasn't about the show, it was the bigger picture that people felt Wilco was being hypocritical and illogical in theiir decision which according to some was just for PR.

No way you guys would still go to that show, right?

  11. It really is a tough spot. Wilco made the decision to stand up in some way for what they believe in which is a decision which should be celebrated in my opinion.

How they chose to stand up was by cancelling the show and people are complaining.

If they chose to release a statement but still play, people would say they are money hungry and don't practice what the preach.

If they chose to play but donate the money, people would say it's a big PR stunt and they wanted everyone to know they were donating money.

Basically in the court of public opinion, one in which people love to complain and criticize, it was a lose/lose for Wilco once they decided to make a stand. Clearly, I consider it a good move and applaud them, however no matter what they did people would find reason to complain.

  12. I don't think any beer is worth the hype.

My hatred for limited craft beer is rooted in this.

When I was first getting into craft beer I had heard a ton about zombie dust this, zombie dust that so naturally I wanted to try zombie dust. Three Floyds on their website shows which stores they distribute to, so I called one by me to ask and the conversation went like this.

Me: Hi, I was wondering if you have any zombie dust in?

    Store: Who is this?

Me: I'm sorry, I think you misheard, I'm just wondering if you have any zombie dust in?

Store: Yes I know, but what is your name?

    Me: Why does that matter?

Store: Because I don't recognize your voice and we only sell it to customers that we know.

So yeah, douche central. I've later found out that it is quite commonplace for bottle shops to hold stuff for regulars, and not even put out and that just screams into every negative stereotype about craft beer douchebags unfortunately, and I hate it. I really like good beer, but I just find that mentality absolutely appaling.  On the outset the craft beer community seems very cool, but when you look closer it's really full of some not to nice people that are super competitive and just looking to chase whales.

Not to mention, I saw recently where Three Floyds named one of their tanks after Jake "The Snake" Roberts. Whatever, not the best taste, but apparently they like wrestling. They then however made a facebook or twitter post with him tagged inviting him to the brewery or something, and I just thought that was in awful taste considering his life story is basically one dealing with awful addicitons and trying to somehow overcome them.

But hey, they make hardcore named beers and are totally metal, so rock on :yeaahh

  13. Fresh Squeezed is one of my favorite beers. Easy to find and cheap for craft make it easily overlooked by much of the craft community, but it really is a great beer and in the summer I always have some in the fridge!

  14. Folks, let's refrain from personal insults and try to make our points without behaving offensively. We're adults here and hopefully capable of reasoned discussion. (So there's no misunderstanding, I say this to everyone involved in this thread, not directed at anyone in particular.)

Hwllo, your post had me thinking that I can't fully appreciate some things....not being black, I can't imagine completely what it feels like to be racially profiled during a routine traffic stop. I know as a woman that even the most sensitive male can't quite get inside how it feels to be a woman who needs to walk somewhere alone in the dark...but every single woman knows what I'm talking about. In the case of this law, I can only imagine the sense of degradation and inferiority that would be in my heart as I went about my ordinary life, if I were gay and living under this law...perhaps running simple errands in the company of my spouse, never knowing when or if we would be turned out of some business for the "crime" of being who I was born as. I try to imagine the hurt, the humiliation, the outrage, the need to object coupled with the fear of having to do so (I'm an introvert...start a lawsuit?! ) (Though I hope I wouldn't shrink from it either)....all of this is horrifying in my imagination, and that's only imagination. The reality must be so much more hard and bitter, and the sense of being betrayed by a country I love and support would be very hard to take.

I don't think anyone should have to live in this country in 2015 with that sort of ugliness hounding their every public footstep. I don't know how well I'm saying this, but the idea of living under such a cloud until some brave soul chases it through the courts is incredibly reprehensible to me. Try to imagine if it were you, or someone you love.

I'm so proud of Wilco for being willing to object to this ugly law.

Well said, and I don't mean to make insults personal, it just seems like an obvious choice to fix something before it becomes a problem, rather than to wait and see.

    Why wait and see?

If the language indeed is not meant to give businesses the right to refuse service to people that are gay people, then it's an easy choice to tidy up that phrasing and make it clear.

However, because so many people don't want that changed, that leads me to believe that they know exactly what that language is intended for.

  15. First you have to be certain that there is a problem, and right now nobody can agree that there is. I prefer to let the courts decide what is constitutional -- not politicians, religions, activists, nor rock and roll bands.

I just seriously feel like you're being dense on purpose or just missing the point.

And how is Wilco deciding what is constitutional? They don't agree with the wording on that law, and they choose not to play. If slavery was still legal in certain states would you have an issue with them CHOOSING not to play in those states?

  16. With "could" being the operative word here, as the law doesn't take effect for 3 months and nobody (including the author of the article) seems to agree on what it might or might not actually do. If someone were actually discriminated against, he/she would file a suit and it would work its way up to the Supreme Court, if necessary. If the law is found unconstitutional, it gets thrown out. That's how things typically work in this country.

As I've said in another thread, the solution to our nation's problems isn't more laws.

But what kind of attitude is that? Isn't it best to fix a problem before it happens if given the opportunity?

If we can all that this CLEARLY could become an issue, why not try and work it out now rather than wait until people are hurt by it?

  17. This is a key quote from the article:

Perhaps it would have been best to wait until the law had actually been used to discriminate against someone. Although it would seem that the band would then be off the hook for refusing service to customers in Indiana.

Woah, really? It's a law with wording that could allow businesses to discriminate like that and your response is wait and see?

Seriously, what's wrong with you? Let's not call out vague wording on a bill that could allow such a thing until people are actually discriminated against? Wow

  18. JUST READ THE PART I QUOTED FOR YOU, O K . .

and here it is o n e  m o r e  t i m e THE POINT IS, if your gonna call out Indiana and do this, then do it for the entire leg of the tour that is going through some very similar places with as worse or even worse ass backward politicians.

and by the way, if they were doing this for the entire leg, THEN I WOULD BE JUMPING UP AND DOWN SAYING that is the Wilco I LOVE! ! !

No, you wouldn't. You're whining because the show you wanted to go to got cancelled. As I said, you're either in agreement with what Indiana is doing, or you don't care and are only concerned with seeing a show.

I read what you posted, but you seem to be ignoring everyone else that's trying to explain how the Indiana phrasing has a twist to it that differentiates it from the others. But why would you listen to that? You just want to see a show.

  19. You say you don't like to go there and then you do.  You don't know me and I don't know you, so I won't judge.

You are correct, cancelling this show is certainly a tiny blip, THIS ONE SHOW DOESN'T MEAN SHIT.  I've seen Wilco perform the same songs again and again and will live VERY HAPPY without ever hearing them again.  Remember this is a fan board, there are many in this state that only get a chance once or twice every ten years to see this band on local turf.  It's about cancelling one date on these grounds, while the entire leg of this tour is going through many places with very similar, although not exactly the same, laws with politicians with similar thoughts.

....so basically you're upset you can't see Wilco. Cool dude.

  20. My god are some people selfish.

Unfortunately the people that was absolutely pissed about this, are speaking more about how miserable they are as a person, rather than anything Wilco related.

I don't like going there on a more personal level, but really, a Wilco concert is a very tiny blip compared to some of these issues. It's either you don't see the big picture, or that you agree with what's going on.

  21. I love that Wilco did this.

The bottom line is that it absolutely is unfortunate for the Wilco fans in Indiana that this happened. And it certainly isn't all their fault that their governor is like this. It is a case however of the bigger picture mattering. Will Wilco cancelling their show in and of itself change anything? No, however it can lead to bigger and more statements like this being made, which could have an impact.

Wilco shows are a great time and they are one of my absolute favorite bands. This is bigger than Wilco though, and I fully support them making a statement like this.

  22. Hey man, no worries. And I feel you. Completely. This beer was donated to the show though and I love anything BCBS, so it had to be done.

Victory at Sea is amazing and is slated to appear on the show soon, actually. Love that beer. My go-to porter as of late.

    Yeah, it's quite tasty!

I was so happy when Surly started distributing to Illinois. I lived near Minneapolis for awhile and when I moved back here I needed my Furious and Coffee Bender fix!
