  1. She opened for the Avett Brothers in D.C. on Friday. Unfortunately I only caught her last song, but I really liked it. I'll have to check out more of her stuff.

Hey, we were at that show!

And I found her to be incredibly dull and lackluster. I liked her songs well enough, but aside from her awesome shoes, there was nothing remarkable or energetic or even personable about her. :(

  2. My fiance wants to use her fake tree and I want to go up to the mountains, per usual, and cut one down. She doesn't like the idea of killing a tree. These are marked trees and part of National forest and it's only $10. Someone convince her please. I've never had a fake tree and don't like the idea.

So, there are a lot of reasons for why a cut tree is better than a plastic tree. 1. Plastic is often loaded with lead. They collect dust and need to be cleaned every year. They off-gas. They are often made in China and shipped and trucked to the us on pallets that are loaded with Asian Long-Horned Beetle and Emerald Ash Borer that are going to eventually kill off all the hardwood in Colorado.

Christmas Tree Farms, and selected cutting of national forest trees are a far better idea. Christmas tree farms are one of the last bastions of farming in suburban communities, keeping openspace open, with lots of habitat for wild animals such as deer, birds, etc. Tree farms allow landscapers to keep employed during the winter months where it is cold (such as new england) and supplements income often enough so that those guys don't have to get laid off. They are often grown on land that nothing else will grow on and they keep it from being developed into townhouse farms or 1 acre zoning lots that suck up all the resources.

Selective cutting in the national forest helps trees get bigger because there's less crowding for root space and resources such as water and sun, and the cutting of the smaller trees is also a fire protection measure.

Getting outside to cut your own tree is also far healthier than going to Target or Walmart and picking on out there. Do I need to go on, or do you think she is convinced? Any self respecting hippy would always opt for a real tree over a plastic one. Some communities (san fran for one, and perhaps pdx) have programs where you "rent" a balled and burlapped or containerized tree for the holiday and then when you're done with it, the urban forester or non profit picks up the tree and plants it where it is needed.

I know i'm late to this thread and perhaps a bunch of this has been discussed already but i had to just stop and post because it is something i feel strongly about and I am also pretty sure I am not wrong.

  3. I think the whole premium ticketing sucks - I never heard of the "requirement of buying two games".

I don't think the White Sox do this (though they might start after this year). I could be wrong about the Sox. I haven't bought a premium ticket since they started it.

A lot of teams that play the red sox or the yankees have started doing it. We could not get a group rate at Braves v Red sox or Giants v Red sox without buying another NON-premium game.

Also, for the big phenom Stephen Strasburg's debut tomorrow at Nat's stadium, they were making people buy FOUR games to see that ONE.

  4. Oh i remembered another peeve...When ball clubs/stadiums that routinely do not sell out because either their management sucks or their team sucks or both, require you to buy TWO games when you only want to see one "premium" game (see SF Giants, Atlanta Braves etc), and tied to that is having to pay more for a "premium" game to begin with, as if there's a penalty to sell out the stadium. Shouldn't the games that will guarantee a sell out actually be CHEAPER? I mean I get the whole "make money" business, i'm not a complete idiot, but to have to buy a ticket to see the giants play the padres just to see the giants play the red sox is kind of obnoxious.

  5. My pet peeves:

    • people who do not give you the universal "thanks" sign when you let them cut in front of you
    • litter bugs
    • folks who think recycling is too hard
    • loud music in cars parked outside my house
    • the idea that lawmakers 3000 miles away think they know what is best for the District of Columbia
    • That DC still doesn't have voting representation in the house or the senate
    • The Washington Inquirer who still will not stop delivering the free paper to me even though I have requested that they stop THREE TIMES
    • people who don't understand migraine headaches
    • the way iTunes is always asking you to update, sometimes TWICE IN ONE DAY
    • servers who ignore me, or hide when the kitchen is slow getting the dinners out, rather than just come out and apologize
    • people whose signatures are far bigger than their actual posts
    • Women's clothing sizes
    • My mother's inability to stock Coca Cola in the house when I am coming to visit even when i say "do you need me to pick up cokes?" and she says, "No I'll get some" and then she doesn't.
    • Cards that require extra postage because they are a weird square size
    • Muddy paw prints tracked through the house
    • People who say they are allergic to cats even when they aren't just because they don't like cats.
    • Drunkards at public events
    • when there's no sugar at the table at the diner, but there's 400 sweet n lows.
    • getting half and half when i ask for milk
    • fake maple syrup instead of real maple syrup (i'll pay extra!)
    • hotels that don't have NESN available in the rooms, when you're in NEW FUCKING ENGLAND.
    • the lack of counter space in my bathroom

And that's just my starter list.

  6. Great show. Hot, stuffy, crowded in front.

Aside from the fact someone in front of me kept farting, which smelled like Easter ham, all in all an outstanding show.

Can't wait for Boston tomorrow night.

Were you in the mezzanine because I had the same problem. OMG i thought i was going to suffocate at least 4 times.

Also i thought the sound was bad, but I'd not seen a show in this new Lupo's so it is possible it is a product of the venue. I did like being up in the mezzanine and looking down on the band--the light shows often made me think we were watching as though the band was playing in hell.
