  1. I was so lazy last year that instead of dismantling the tree and putting it back into the box it came in, I just picked it up and deposited it, fully dressed with lights, into the garage. I retrieved it last week and shook it out only to find a whole immigrant community of spiders and assorted creepie crawlies falling out of it. Cue me, like an idiot, running the vacuum over the tree out in the yard. :blush

There's actually an old european story about spiders and christmas trees...

(A folk legend from Germany and the Ukraine)

O nce upon a time, long ago, a gentle mother was busily cleaning the house for the most wonderful day of the year.... The day on which the Christ child came to bless the house. Not a speck of dust was left. Even the spiders had been banished from their cozy corner in the ceiling to avoid the housewife's busy cleaning. They finally fled to the farthest corner of the attic.

T'was the Christmas eve at last! The tree was decorated and waiting for the children to see it. But the poor spiders were frantic, for they could not see the tree, nor be present for the Christ child's visit. But the oldest and wisest spider suggested that perhaps they could peep through the crack in the door to see him. Silently they crept out of their attic, down the stairs, and across the floor to wait in the crack in the threshold. Suddenly, the door opened a wee bit and quickly the spiders scurried into the room. They must see the tree closely, since their eyes weren't accustomed to the brightness of the room... so the crept all over the tree, up and down, over every branch and twig and saw every one of the pretty things. At last they satisfied themselves completely of the Christmas tree beauty.

But alas!! Everywhere they went they had left their webs, and when the little Christ child came to bless the house he was dismayed. He loved the little spiders, for they were God's creatures too, but he knew the mother, who had trimmed the tree for the little children, wouldn't feel the same, so He touched the webs and they all turned to sparkling, shimmering, silver and gold!

Ever since that time, we have hung tinsel on our christmas trees, and according to the legend, it has been a custom to include a spider among the decorations on the tree.

although the German one i read had Father Christmas come by the house and make the tinsel, not the Christ Child, which frankly MAKES NO SENSE AT ALL. But whatever.

  2. But, the difference is that Deb cracks cases she wants to crack. She may find she doesn't want to know anything about this. I think the worst she finds out is that Harry is Dexter's real father. I think the Deb thing might be a red herring.

  3. Here's how i was thinking it might play out, seeing as i was pretty sure Trinity did something before heading off into the sunset in his mustang...

Dexter wakes up from his concussion from the first (?) episode of this season. He's by the side of the road, having been thrown from his vehicle. Who is there when he opens his eyes? Trinity. Now Dexter has all the knowledge of what he thinks happened over the last several months, but it has only been a few minutes. He has no idea what is real. Is Trinity a serial killer, or a just a dude who stopped by the side of the road? Maybe too farfetched but Rita being dead in the bathtub and harrison sitting in a pool of blood (not even near the bathtub, btw) was a little too trite for me!

  4. The idea isn't to change everything right now, but to make changes when and where you can. I used to live in a community where one of us had a truck, the other had a garage, the other a snow blower, the other a print shop, etc. We all shared. We won't be able to get rid of trucks tomorrow, but we can try to reduce the number of them on the road running on diesel. We can use rail frieght, we can buy local. There are a lot of little things that people can do, and it will add up. But the idea that we don't need to do anything because some magazine or news story said that global warming/climate change isn't real is pure crap. Pollution is happening and it is effecting people's health, livelihood, even the rate that things like buildings deteriorate.

We all have choices to make, and the key is to make better choices about energy types and usage, to drive more fuel efficient cars, to turn off the lights when we leave a room, to put the recycle bin out on the curb, to compost your yard waste, etc. none of these things are going to take food out of your baby's mouth, or keep your kid from going to college, or raise your taxes or any of those fears that people have about change. So why all the blowback? If you're gonna read a paper newspaper, as some people (self included) do, then just recycle it. If you go to starbucks or dunkin donuts every morning for your extra extra, use a reusable coffee mug that you wash out yourself. Invest five bucks in recycled and reusable grocery bags and use them instead of plastic. Is it really that hard to make those changes to your lifestyle?

  5. I'd have a hard time believing that. We already had a murderous brother come out of the woodwork. I think we'll find out that Harry is his actual father. Harry felt responsible for what happened to Dexter's mother (both her murder and her pregnancy) and that is why he took Dexter and not the other brother.

  6. I paid more for my Civic's moon roof and silly extra stereo buttons. I guess that makes me an idiot.

i did not pay (much) extra for the sun roof and the leather heated seats and the stereo buttons and the bose stereo. AND I LOVE ALL THOSE THINGS!

also, the civic didn't have leather seats at any trim level and therefore I went with the mazda.

  7. Eat and drink some water. Try to stay hydrated. The chances that you'll actually eat at the reception are kind of slim. How many peeps are going to be there? If it is a small gathering you'll probably be able to eat. Are you guys doing a mini honey moon or anything? What is the plan?
