  1. Gutsy post, Kevin. A lot of people never get to the point that you're at of really knowing who they are and getting OK with that. Looks like you're one of the few who does. Hey, maybe people like that kind of person even more than an extrovert... you know - honest, sincere, real... all those things that actually matter.

    Peace,

    Vince

  2. i've always gotten the impression that Mutations and Midnite Vultures were pretty much ignored.

i rarely ever see anyone say either is their favorite Beck.

I wanted to like both of them when they came out, but they still keep falling to the bottom of my list. I'll pop one of them in from time to time, but they're not growers.

The new one sounds quite good. Very excited about that.

  3. Love then unconditionally.

Eat together.......and yes, at the table.

Don't expect them to wrap their head around an idea it took you 30 or 40 years to figure out.

The key to discipline is consistency.

Help them learn to listen to ol' timers - their stories about the past will help them learn to respect the present.

Despite what you might think, they hear every word you say.

    ....just sayin'

That is the one that continues to surprise me. We have a 16 YO daughter, and she will debate / argue with everything anyone tells her when she hears it. But she processes it, and you can always tell (later) that it sunk in. It still amazes me at times.

Those are all really good, btw. To add a couple:

Pick your battles. Consistency is key, but not everything is a federal case...

Make sure that they feel comfortable bringing their friends to your home.

  4. The Blind Boys of Alabama did a version of Amazing Grace set to The House of the Rising Sun. It's breathtaking.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. No one will have a clue who it is... they'll just think it's pretty. Love the irony.

Mountain Bed is great, but people hearing it for the first time wouldn't get it. Same is probably true for Videotape, and Last Flowers. Those are really moving, emotional songs for me, but only 'cause I've heard them so much.

I think On & On & On would be the Wilco song of choice.

  5. Yes. I think Tweedy has made this point in many interviews. He isn't like your friend, in that he fully expects people to come away with different experiences/takeaways from his lyrics. In fact, I've heard Tweedy relate this concept not just to his poetry, but to the music itself, even going so far as to say that no one can own a Wilco song, because it's a different experience for every listener.

Half of it's you, and half is me.

  6. ...and then I heard the recording of them closing the residency with this and....well, that was kind of a letdown, honestly. :(

I agree on that. I think it needed way more fiddle, especially since AB was there that night. It's such a fun ride on BT, and the live version just didn't seem to capture that. Maybe we just got spoiled with the live drone... but DIMD just wasn't quite the killer I was hoping for.

  7. Do the folks who loved this album when it first came out still think it holds up? I am curious...

I think I am the reverse. I didn't like it all that much when it came out, but I spun it this morning for the first time since it was released when I spun it quite a bit and I liked it much more than I remember.

Me too. I had to put it away for a couple weeks after a few listens, and then get it back out. It has definitely been a grower for me. The EP songs are actually kinda helpful to round it all out. Last Flowers is great song, even though it has the same "sound" as Karma Police. And there are a couple of remixes of Videotape that I like as well. So, yeah, it's a grower.
