Saw him at the Mass MOCA earlier this month. The new stuff is sounding great!

Greg,
I am also unfamiliar with the books but am enjoying the series. Also, like you, I had trouble with the societal structure. I found this viewer's guide on the website. It has a map and interactive family trees. After spending some time reading all of it, I am no longer confused.
Awesome, thanks a lot!

They can't have the challenger lose every single time. Therefore, Michael Symon doesn't get on as often as he should.
I remember reading a while back about the amount of lead time they get finding out the secret ingredient. I don't remember how much time it actually was, though.
Wikipedia says they're given 3-5 possible secret ingredients 45 minutes in advance.

As someone completely unfamiliar with the books I like it for the most part but am a little confused. I am having a hard time picturing the societal structure i guess. who's who, and why certain groups are enemies. Also, the vocal recording seems to be low to me or something, because it's always hard for me to hear the dialog, which doesn't make understanding everything any easier. But overall I am liking the series.

The first ones that come to mind for me are:
Matthew 25:21 - The Mountain Goats
Inherited Scars - Sage Francis
How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Do You Realize - The Flaming Lips

Just grabbed Audiogalaxy and it rocks. One major peeve though....what is up with how it tracks/lists the songs?? I have all my stuff tagged correctly but the tool shows them all in weird order. Kinda blows it for me unless you just wanted to shuffle.
I didn't have any tagging issues with mine.

Now THAT sounds cool. Especially since you don't have to have one of those i-droids or smart telophones to use it... Nice!
Well I think it's mainly designed for use with smart phones, but there's a web page you can log into your account with and stream your music at any computer as well.
-
If anyone is interested in streaming music to their iphone or android phone I'd suggest Audiogalaxy. It's free, and runs an agent on your home computer and streams to your cell whenever you want.

Now who's the west coast going to use for their hooks?

I would recommend swinging up to Burlington Vermont. It's a really nice town with good food and a nice New England vibe.

my first camera was a rebel XT, about 2-3 generations removed. that took good photos, but i wanted a bit more flexibility so i upgraded. bodies can come and go, spend decent $ on good lenses and they will last.
check out dpreview.com or fredmiranda.com for reviews, or google POTN (it's a Canon user site) and dig around in there.
I'd pretty much echo what Tinnitus said. I've been using Canon dslr's since the 10D and have used most of their bodies, including several of the Rebels. They're great bodies and are priced well. Think of your first body as a vehicle to get you into dslr terrory. Then, when you realize how awesome and fun it can be you can start building up lenses first and switch to a better body down the road. To be honest, if you're just entering field I would even suggest looking at a model that was one or two generations old. They use the same lens mounts so you wouldn't lose the ability to upgrade, but they tend to be about $100 cheaper. That would be the Canon 500D. Check them out, find a local camera shop and see if they have any you can hold and get a feel for, maybe take a couple shots. A good dslr is a long term investment, you're sure to get your money's worth.

So, my birthday is coming up and everybody in my family wants to pool their money/get me gift certificates to get me a new digital camera (because that's what I want). I'm looking for something anywhere in the $300 - $750 range. I'm really interested in expanding my photography equipment, although I really don't have any idea where to begin. I don't need anything that has a ton of bells and whistles, just something really solid that takes nice pictures, and is fairly user friendly. If anyone has any suggestions as to what they use, or something they recommend, I'd sure appreciate you posting them here.
If you want to be able to expand your photography equipment, I would look at an entry level dslr. The Canon 550D is on the upper end of your price range; http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T2i-Digital-3-0-Inch-18-55mm/dp/B0035FZJHQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1299071392&sr=8-2 however, if you get it you can begin to invest in lenses and flashes that will work with any other canon dslr you decide to get in the future. So it would be a nice stepping stone for you. If it increases your interest in the field then you can grow with it and eventually replace the body with a higher end model but still have lenses. On the other hand if you don't have the time to get your money's worth out of a camera you don't have to feel bad for blowing $5000 on the body.

I know they're a fairly polarizing band on these boards, but this album is just... weird.
-
ditto.
not as moved by this version of 'Glad Man Singing' as the solo one on Daytrotter, but still awesome.
Agreed. And I kind of wish I took your advice and didn't listen to it live first. But I do enjoy the album a lot and feel like it's one to grow on.

This it a totally arbitrary way of figuring out which songs to look into, but sometimes I'll look up an artist on songmeangings.net and just download the songs with the most comments. With that said, if you are just looking for some songs and not albums I'd check out 16 military wives, the mariner's revenge song, of angels and angles, song for myla goldberg, sons and daughters, when the war came, and the sporting life.
From the new album I'm loving the opening track, Don't Carry it All.

With Ben Massarella, Joe Adamik and Jim Becker from Califone collaborating on this album, I don't see how it could be anything but masterful. Beam's songwriting is top notch.
I was a bit underwhelmed by the broadcast the other night. Technical difficulties made it all but unwatchable.
Kiss Each Other Clean might be my favorite album title so far this year.
You could download it as an mp3 from npr, the quality is much better.

Should be interesting. I really liked the 3 songs on the Walking Far from Home single.

It's, well, definitely different from his earlier work. I actually like it and it makes me at least look forward to an album with a different vibe to it.

Are any of these programs better at handling external harddrives than others?
Mediamonkey and foobar handle an external with no problem. Is it always plugged in?
-
I love how it's easy to switch between your audio library/database to browsing by directories in MediaMonkey, is this possible in WinAmp? I haven't used it since back when I didn't have enough mp3s to require having a "library".
-
foobar
Foobar is pretty awesome. I always use it to tag my concerts. Do you use any extensions or skins with it?
-
I've been using MediaMonkey to organize and listen to my music forever. iTunes on WIndows always seemed too clunky, and ultimately MediaMonkeys organizing and tagging features made it the best bet to me. Lately though I was thinking it'd be nice to separate my studio music from live recordings, and I was just wondering what everyone else uses for their media playing around here.
Rumors about spring/summer shows?
