  1. Calm down.

    I'm calm. You?

Anyway, I think if you take the time to read their platforms, you'd see that they're actually different on just about everything else too, but if you're the type of voter who thinks that endless war could possibly be a reasonable policy then it probably won't matter to you anyway.

Yes, this is what I said. Thanks. You're EXACTLY what I was talking about when I said I was pessimistic about supporters keeping the campaign civil. Nice work! :thumbup

  2. Er, no, I didn't make a statement either way regarding which approach was "right". I was just arguing that they were in fact different approaches, in response to you saying that their platforms were the same. Feel free to take your time in determining which approach makes the most sense to you, just don't confuse that with there being no difference between the two.

Alright man, clearly we are not communicating. In the post you disagreed with, I clearly said OUTSIDE of that issue they are more similar than any match-up of recent memory. OBVIOUSLY Iraq is an issue. OBVIOUSLY, they have different takes. But OUTSIDE of that issue (which i have yet to draw a concrete conclusion on), they are not so far apart that I see a radically different America if one is elected over the other. This is MY opinion and NEVER did I try to dismiss Iraq as a non-issue.

  3. Economics will solve the oil issue. Reduced demand = increased supply = lower prices

    From auto news:

    - Sales of basic compact cars from Jan to Apr (before the REALLY high gas prices) rose 37%, compared to full SUVs dropping 27%

    - Last month 4 cyl vehicles were 46% of all US retail sales -- up from 36% in Feb 08 and 28% in May 04

    - One of 10 dealers isn't accepting big SUVs and pickups as trade-ins (get rid of yours while you can)

    - Yesterday GM began to contemplate what would have pretty unthinkable even a year ago -- killing HUMMER, while calling high oil prices the new reality

Also I read about a week ago that vehicles like the Geo Metro and Ford Fiesta that aren't even made for this market anymore are selling for 3-4x more $$ than what they did 6 months ago at wholesale auctions. This is just astounding.

The biggest thorn in the "supply" side (at least from the US's standpoint) -- India and China's increasing demand. They are already used to paying a lot for oil/gas, so these latest increases are less of a shock -- so demand isn't going down like ours is/will. The other kicker is the fed monetary policy and reduced value of the dollar making us feel like we are paying more.

Do you have any figures on what % of oil consumption is due to private (read: non-commercial) vehicles? I see the above as good news, but also see that shipping and commercial fuel consumption as being a much bigger issue. Also, we still subsidize the oil industry (despite record profits). Who is going to change that? If we strip the subsidies, do you think the oil companies will just accept less profit? No, they have an OBLIGATION to maximize shareholder value. That means increased prices, not just at the pumps, but for almost everything we buy. No politician wants to be responsible for that, despite the lip service.

  4. Iraq is the single most important issue of our time though. Seems sort of disingenuous to me to say, "Well, they're really rather similar other than on the most important, biggest issue." Aside from the fact that they aren't really alike on any of the other major issues anyway.

Well again, if you've made up your mind on which approach is the right approach, than you have your differentiator. Just because it is the biggest issue doesn't mean I am going to willy nilly pick sides before I feel confident one approach is better than the other. All I stated was that, FOR ME, i wouldn't be upset with either one winning (although I am currently an Obama supporter) based ion the fact that I feel both could unite more than any candidate of recent memory. If the election were held today and McCain won, I wouldn't downright depressed as I was with both W elections. Your mileage may vary.

  5. Well, as I said, the war issue is the one area of stark difference, IMO. I said, aside from that issue (as I am still not sure withdrawal is the best option). If that is your issue, then you have your clear distinction. I do not. On taxes, McCain is proposing keeping the tax cut, because he sees pulling it back as dangerous in the current economic climate. He was opposed to it in the first place and making it permanent needs to come with more fiscal responsibility and focus on the deficit. As for guns, abortion, etc.... I don't think McCain is nearly as conservative as some of you seem to think and he is not nearly as ardent on those issues as recent Republican candidates. Yes, he will appoint more conservative justices than Obama, but again, I don't believe they will be of the Roberts, Scalia molds as you seem to think. McCain has always been a bit of an outsider to the GOP. He is now trying to shore up support from the GOP base, but I believe he can't change his stripes. As much as he tries to campaign right, he will fall back more towards the middle if elected (again, much more so than any GOP candidate of recent memory). Just as Bush isn't really the "compassionate conservative" he campaigned as. Again, I am not saying they are identical. I am saying that they are much MORE similar than in any recent contests and I don't see (other than Iraq) any huge differences in the direction of the country should one or the other be elected. What I DO see is two candidates that have more potential to bring people together than anyone I can remember. I think THAT outweighs the differences.

  6. I think perhaps you're reading too much into my comment. My point is, they really aren't very similar on policy.

Care to elaborate? My point is that they are much more similar than Kerry/Bush, Bush/Gore, Clinton/Dole, Clinton/Bush, etc. There are differences but not as stark as the media makes them out to be by calling Obama socialist, etc.

  7. I don't think so. Tom is pretty honest and forthright in interviews (more so than I think of lot of people in the org would like). I don't have anything concrete, but I have heard direct from A horse's mouth (ha!) that they are ready to go when the time is right. I am predicting NYE as they did after the last hiatus.

  8. I have to say as someone who REALLY struggles with what to do on Iraq (therefore not a deciding issue for me with these candidates), I would be happy with either one. McCain not being a "base" republican and Obama's obvious gift for inspiring people makes me think that either one could heal a little of the divisiveness that I see as our biggest problem. When you get down to it, these candidates are not THAT different on policy. Unfortunately, the pessimist in me thinks that even if the candidates themselves decide to run clean, positive campaigns, the supporters of each won't let that happen. No matter what, I can't see anything but improvement from our current situation on January 20th.

  9. Matt, get in line behind me for the punching-Anton-fest. :pirate I only watched that movie because I was stuck on a long plane ride & there wasn't much else among the offerings. I thought it wasn't the worst thing I'd ever seen, but it wasn't all that riveting either.

Man, I don't like Nixon much either but docs about him are fascinating, Anton is one fucked up dude and watching him self-destruct is simultaneously sad, funny and, yes, riveting in my book.

  10. i tried watching Dig! and i fuckin' hated it. i try not to let an artist's personality influence my opinion on their music but i want to punch anton. what a fuckin' douchebag.

Wow, I'm not really a fan of their music, but that doc is one of THE most compelling music documentaries I've ever seen. No matter what you think of him (douchebag would be my assessment as well), he is eminently watchable and makes for a great doc subject, IMO.

  11. My faves:

Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense

    Pavement - Slow Century

    Ween - Live in Chicago

Spinal Tap - This is Spinal Tap

    The Devil & Daniel Johnston

Granted, I still haven't seen "Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies" and I've heard that's a winner.

Ooh, two good ones I forgot: Stop making Sense and Live in Chicago. I've never seen Slow Century. Might have to check that out. I GUESS Spinal Tap would count (it was one of my all-time favorite movies, let alone music movies), but I wasn't considering flicks like that. The Devil and Daniel Johnston was interesting, but count me among those that don't "get" his music therefore I would never watch it again.

  12. Thanks for the honest and helpful responses. I didn't realize the history of it being for his father. I guess I see it a BIT differently now, but still don't feel like it captures that "circle of life and death" idea very well (for me at least). For me a good example of that is Joni Mitchell's Circle Game. Although any song on this subject will compare unfavorably with that one for me since it is the song I selected to play at my brother's funeral 16 years ago. I guess I will just give up on the song and keep it in my permanent skip file. ;) That's the great thing about music is how one song can mean such different things to different people!

  13. I hesitate to post this as I don't want it to come off as baiting. Please take this post as an honest attempt to try to understand what I'm missing as everyone seems to love On and On and On but me. To me the music is trite and boring and the lyrics are among the MOST trite I have EVER heard from Tweedy. What does everyone hear in this tune? Am I destined to just not "get" it and it's as simple as that?

  14. You know there was a time when I was seeing a lot of shows that the hit-or-miss jamming style was okay with me. But now, when I get a chance to see a band once MAYBE twice a year, I don't really see the gamble as a good one anymore. I don't want my one show to be a disaster and, frankly, many Phish shows WERE disasters after '95 or so when they really started jamming. The jamming they did before that was much more structured with Trey clearly taking the lead. I think the democratic, more free form jamming could be transcendent, but that didn't happen often, IMO, and even at shows where they DID hit those peaks, it was peaks interspersed among many many valleys. I also think the Phish "funk" was painfully boring, but that's just me. I like my Wilco as I liked my Phish: well-rehearsed enough to be tight, but loose; expansive, but concise; egalitarian, but make-no-mistake who is leading the proceedings.

  15. Did anyone notice that after the helicopter crash, there is a close-up of Jack on the raft saying "it's okay, we're alive"? In that close-up, it looks like it was filmed separately leading me to believe it was added in afterwards to specifically have someone say "we're alive." Significant?

  16. Our telecast got screwed up last night towards the beginning and apparently we missed the entire Walt/Hurley scene and Jack/Locke confrontation. It came back just as Locke was saying "if you lie to them as well as you lie to yourself..." or something like that. :( :angry

  17. :lol
