  1. I've asked before, and still have not recieved a solid answer.

     

    Why is it that some fans become upset when thier favorite band becomes popular?

     

    I mean really, is it that you just cant stand the fact that you might like something mainstream? You were a big fan of Boy, but once those bastardos sold out and released Rattle and Hum fergeit it. Now every 15 year old kid with a bad case of acne is a U2 Fan. Not you though, you've moved on and "found" Husker Du.

     

    I didnt get it then, and I dont get it now

     

    To give you an honest opinion and not a sardonic rebuttal on this post:

     

    I think that maybe people who are addicted to being into things that no one else really knows about feel like they have some authority over the majority because they know something you don't. If you notice, they'll try to push their favorite bands on you, but then feel cheated if that band shows up on a popular movie/TV commercial/popular TV show.

     

    The reason for this, I believe, is:

    1. they feel that they have to fight to prove their genuineness as a fan. Like when people say "I've been a fan of this band since blah blah blah." and you're thinking yeah... right

     

    or

     

    2. Someone they don't like might become a fan of this band putting them on the same level in a way. Like... what if J-Lo announced that she was a huge Wilco fan? Would you feel a little dirty? Or maybe kind of irritated that she probably just doesn't get it?

     

    I'm not claiming to be an expert... these are just theories. Personally, I hope Wilco gets all the attention they deserve and they're still going to be my favorite no matter what because I can't think of a single Wilco song that doesn't make me feel good when I hear it.

  2. Truly amazing, both discs, I love the part on the 2nd disc when the band's listening to ITMWLY, and Glenn and Jeff are "dancing" hilariously. Also in the same song, the camera's going around in circles and the band keeps switching places seating wise and doing funny things.

  4. On the day Beyond came out, I saw what I'd guess to be a 15 year-old kid wearing those. I got excited and asked, "Are those the Dino Jr. sneakers?" He smiled and said, "Aw yeah." I said, "Did you get the new album today?" And he looked at me confused. He then said "Man, I got a bunch of SB's". I was a bit disappointed. Doing some research I found out SB's are the general type of Nike.

     

    Yeah, good story. :chatterbox

     

    What? they put their name on shoes?! SELLOUTS! I love the album, but I think I'm going to have to go put it in the microwave now :punch

  5. I just hope all this selling out will finally get me my dream.

     

    a complete Wilco action figure set, with the loft. Free Mail order Tony w/ ear piece and cell phone w/ proof of purchase.

    Also...a comic book starring the ex-members of Wilco; they had nothing better to do but form a Super-Hero team.

     

    I'd buy that stuff :yay

     

    But I couldn't afford it... I'd have to write a song and let a car company use it in a commercial first.

  6. I'm sort of concerned about that happening with the Wilco Vdub ads. The songs will never be run into the ground for me, of course, but I worry that with the commercial being played 5 times during a two hour block of tv (this happened during the mythbusters shark shows), people who haven't had the chance to love the songs will start to hate them. It could possibly scare off new Wilco fans. If it was only on the tube every now and then , people might go, "Hey! That sounds cool! What band is this?" or if it's on all of the time, "I hate this soooong!" *click.

    In the end, the commercial use of the songs doesn't bother me, as a fan, at all. I'm happy that the fellas can make a living by doing what they enjoy.

     

    I know what you mean. Fountains of Wayne is one of my favorite bands, and Stacey's Mom is a really cute, funny novelty song. I thought it was great when they put it into a commercial, but it's the kind of thing where the novelty wears out quickly and I heard that song EVERYWHERE! Not only did it ruin the song for me, but it also ran off potential new fans.

  7. I think, to accuse a band that gives albums away before they're released, permits gigs to be recorded, webcasts for free shows on a regular basis, of selling out, is one of the most 'selfish', narrow minded things I've heard in a while....

     

    Don't forget selling a double album (Being There) for the price of a single disc at their own expense AND getting dropped from their label for refusing to change thier art (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) just to suit Reprise records' ideas of what would sell.

     

    This doesn't sound like a band who would sell out.

  8. If anyone knows where I'm coming from it's Calexico .. seriously .. the dude has been around.. there is also a hint of pretentiousness in most of what I have read which is always a turnoff

     

    I don't think I've ever read any pretentiousness into what he's said, but he does seem kind of unsure of himself sometimes. But hey, I do too... I'm unsure of myself 85% of the time really and I despise pretentiousness.

     

    I can imagine constantly being asked questions by people who don't know (and therefore probably don't understand) you can be kind of exhausting and depleting.

    I'm sure I don't, actually. AN album is a product... they make their music and then they sell it and you and everyone else pays for it. so... explain maybe?

     

    Bands used to take very strong stands against this kind of thing, for the very reason above: It takes something that has meaning, and it debases it. REM refused to license End of the World to Microsoft for Windows 95, and still won't license its songs for use in commercials. Do you really think, I dunno, Bob Mould would let the Husker Du catalog be used for selling board games? Or the Avengers would license We Are the One for a Gap campaign?

     

    Would Thom Yorke do this? Michael Stipe? Patti Smith?

     

    Do you think Tweedy says "Hey, Michael Stipe wouldn't do this, so I'm not gunna?" err.. probably not. Two different people with two different views.

     

    how much does it suck to hear an Iggy Pop song used for Carnival Cruise Lines?

     

    It doesn't suck to hear Iggy... ever...

     

    I for one have lost a little respect for Jeff and company for doing this.

     

    Well that's really really too bad
