  1. I saw it as a sophomore in high school, after getting drunk behind the mall that housed our local movie theater, and though I would never admit it to my friends, by then end, I had tears in my eyes. And goddamit, I’m (almost) not ashamed to admit it.
  2. Off topic - is it just me, or does it appear as though Del Potro has the longest arms in tennis? At one point, Federer was dashing back and forth, hitting what would normally be winners, playing every conceivable angle - meanwhile, here’s Potro, standing nearly still, effortlessly returning everything Federer could throw at him.
  3. I don’t necessarily disagree with any of this, and, as usual, you’ve made some great points. With one exception, I sort of pride myself on my willingness to hold folks accountable, despite how I may feel about them personally. I have openly disagreed with and/or criticized Hitchens on many, many occasions, perhaps not on this board, but elsewhere. The same goes for Wallace, he is, obviously, my favorite writer, but I don’t think everything he has written is golden, nor have I agreed with him on all occasions, and I’ve expressed those feelings elsewhere as well. I try my best to behave this way
  4. You’re right, I’m way off topic – and I apologize for sending this thing off the rails. I’m done. In the future, remind me to not step foot in sports related threads.
  5. You’re right, I’m painting with a wrecking ball where it might be more appropriate to work with a scalpel, or maybe just a bowie knife. I don’t disagree that sports play an important role in our culture, and many social advancements have been sped along because of them, my point, originally, is that we have a tendency to overlook or excuse assholish behavior simply because someone is really good at something, in this case, a sport. Many athletes are pretty much physical artists on the field/court, but total fucking assholes and wastes of space off – Michael Vick comes to mind. But rather than
  6. The analogy doesn’t hold given that language and the written word, the ability to express the entire gamut of human emotions, our defining ability as humans, far exceeds the limits of basketball, which, can only ever reference itself. I get your point, Jordan could do things with his body that few of us could ever pull off, but my point, is that it's still just basketball, and because he's good at doing this, it does not excuse jerky behavior. Tomorrow, we could arbitrarily invent a game in which we throw rocks through a hole drilled into a tree, and the two of us could become the best ther
  7. We were getting a bit close to elevating him to godlike status, which, is maybe a bit much for a basket ball player, referring to him as being fundamentally “different” because he excels at throwing a ball in a hole.
  8. I’ll probably get slammed for this, but to keep things in perspective, Michael Jordon excelled at putting a ball in a hole. He did it better than just about anyone else, but still, a ball in a hole.
  9. The irony of all ironies regarding these sign holding morons, is that they voted for Bush twice, so in that sense, they themselves share the blame for enabling him to mishandle the economy for eight years. Which is not to say that Clinton and the democrats did not have a hand in fucking things up as well, but Jesus fucking Christ, before blaming all the nations woes on a president that inherited Bush’s incompetence, after only 8 months, take a good look in the mirror before picking up a crayon and putting it to paper. If you voted for Bush, congratulate yourself for helping to fuck up our e
  10. I think the more important, overlooked point here, is that professional wrestling should never find itself becoming more like tennis.
  11. Michael, I'm really happy for you. I'll let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!
  12. It shouldn’t, as what you would consider a liberal, if not a socialist, I spent the day calling the victim’s families, just to remind them that I hate America, and that they deserved it, and oh – socialism. As I’m sure the rest of the community did as well. Of course, I don’t recall you starting a 9/11 remembrance thread….but I did, so, my patriotism is obviously bigger than yours.
  13. This. My reply had more to do with your shame-on-all-of-you-for-not expressing-your-feelings/outrage-regarding-9/11…again tone, than with anything having to do with a 9/11 thread. Perhaps some of us chose to attend a mass, and did our grieving in private, in a pew, or, maybe some of us spent the day at the ocean, with friends and family, expressing our grief, or maybe someone living in California hiked a favorite nearby peak, and upon reaching the summit, looked east with a heavy heart. As Speed Racer has pointed out, everyone grieves in there own way, hell, some of us don’t even grieve
  14. I wonder if Fox News plays the gotcha game with conservatives – in fact they do not. But the difference, is that Fox News labels itself a fair and balanced news channel, while The Daily Show makes no claims concerning fairness and/or balance. Kristol dug his own hole, Stewart just gave him the shovel.
  15. In which John Stewart, a COMEDIAN, eviscerates Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, and all around fuckhead, in just about every way imaginable, with a special nod to health care. With video: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/28/bill-kristol-admits-publi_n_246145.html
  16. Crow - What, exactly, should we be talking about? Must we publicly express our outrage every September 11th? Recount where we were, and what we were doing when we heard the news? Recall how it made us feel? What, precisely, were you expecting?
  17. And therein lies my main problem with religion, it robs us of what defines us as humans; independent thought. Putting aside religious dogma entirely, I cannot help but believe that most adults would agree that sometimes, abortion serves an important function, and that it makes sense to provide contraceptives to teens, and that we should educate our children with regards to sex, early and often. The urge to have sex is one of our most basic, rudimentary impulses, yet, it is a subject that we often force adolescents to navigate alone, without our guidance – often for religious reasons. Now, w
  18. Pretty much anything by Styx, Journey, and to a lesser extent, REO Speedwagon. And Frank Stalone if the mood strikes me.
  19. Ok, but they often express a similar sentiment even in cases where a pregnancy results from rape. I’m trying Poongoogler, I’m really trying…(you have to read that using the voice of Jules, the real Jules from Pulp Fiction, not that other dude)
  20. It is my right, as a paying customer, to yell “Free Bird” and “You suck!” and “WOOOOOO!!!” whenever or wherever I so choose, and as often as I like. This right also extends to the way in which I respond to both threads and posts.
  21. I agree that reasonable arguments can be (and have been) made in favor of going to and/or waging war. However, my point, is that rabid pro-lifers seem much less interested in preserving the lives of innocent civilians who have a much greater purchase on life, and thus, much more to lose than a developing fetus. True - war is often waged to secure resources, both financial in nature and to control access to natural resources for the betterment of the war wagers, or so we’re told. So, in that sense, abortion could be considered a woman’s self defense against a future she doesn’t want and/or didn
